Unless I missed it, I don't think Neile or Jim mentioned this, but it's definitely worth mentioning publicly. Jim won this year's T.S. Eliot prize. I'm not enough of a poetry fan to have any idea what this means, aside for the fact that it ended up in the publication of this book. Jim's poetry is really fascinating. They tend to be stories of a snippet of the life of other people - typically scientists, but also people who have found themselves in some unique position, like the extended section on the Japanese fishermen exposed to fallout from nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands. I've read a number of these poems before in his previous chapbook, and found them quite compelling. I definitely recommend them to anyone who is mildly intrigued by one they read above. Oh yeah... Congratulations Jim! Turns out I can't go. :^( It's a general admission bleacher-seating ticket. Cost me $35.60 all told, face value of $25.00. Let me know what you're willing to pay for it (though of course $35.60's the max). I'm taking off for vacation in a couple of hours, to return on the 11th, so sorry if I leave anybody hanging for a reply to this. - - Vienna ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jun 2002 13:51:26 -0700 (PDT) From: Subject: Re: Human Cartography...shameless self-promotion Thanks Neal for the plug for my first book of poetry. We're all fans of Ben from the show we played with him and Evan Dando last summer and since then he's been touring constantly with bands like Ben Folds and Dashbord Confessional.
