Someone criticised the new Patty Griffin because she uses an accordian in it, and said it reminds them of Weird Al Yankovic. Personally, I have no problem with the instrument in the right hands, and have tried, off the top of my head, to come up with some great accordian songs. I know there are tons out there, but so far all I've got is: Dar Williams -- Better Days REM -- You are the Everything Tom Waits -- pretty much anything off of Rain Dogs and Frank's Wild Years Mental as Anything -- If you Leave Me, Can I Come To? That last one is also my personal Favourite Title of All Time. Greg Lake's "C'est La Vie" is conspicuous in its absence. adam k. PS -- what's with the "missing girl" fw? Anything by Sharon Shannon is fine. :) All right, that's cheating, but that woman sure knows how to use an accordion. I can't think of individual songs right now, but Bill Jones accompanies herself on accordion as well. Ellen ===== "Literature stops in 1100. Sharon Shannon - anything. I don't have any of Sharon's albums, just a couple of tracks on "A Woman's Heart" compilation but I saw her at Glastonbury Festival one year, can't quite remember which, '95 posssibly, and she was great fun. Her albums are on my "must get someday" list but so are lots of others. I'm sure most of you know what I mean. If you like the lively, traditional, "jig" sound you'll probably like her. There's a couple of tracks on Katy Carr's, supported Veda Hille, here, in London a while back, album that have a Concertina on. Is a Concertina exactly the same as an Accordian or are there differences? Not very jiggy use of the instument here but works well. Plenty of Cello as well, always a good thing. People playing Sea Shanties on the London Underground - cool. :) I'm too am sure I've heard something else with accordians somewhere recently that I really liked but I can't remember what. Sure it was something I recently bought. n.p. Katy Carr 'Screwing Lies' as this post made me think of it. n.r. Just finished 'Patriots' by Steve Sohmer and wondering what to start next. n.g. It's like trying to think of songs that use violins, or any other strings. There are tons, but I can't name them off the top of my head. Personally, I love accordions and think they're really cool instruments. Partially because there are so many different kinds used in all different sorts of musical styles, and almost every culture in the world has some kind of accordion. And accordionists busk a lot in subways, which is very nice when you're waiting for a slow train. My favorite accordionist is Maria Kalaniemi from Finland. She plays traditional Nordic music, some of it has jazz influences, and there are tangos also. She has several albums-- my favorites are _Iho_ and _Ahma_, with her band Aldargaz. There's one after that with Timo Alakotila, the pianist from Aldargaz. And I think there's actually a newer one than that. And older ones as well. Another good Nordic accordionist is Karen Tweed. Albums available on Northside Records and at most online stores. There's a group called Cafi Accordion Orchestra whose albums are available at CD Baby. Has anyone heard this group? I'm tempted to get one, simply because the name is so promising. JoAnn Last playing: Rachael Sage _Illusion's Carnival_ Rachael delivers another great album! And I think she uses accordion somewhere on here. - -----Original Message----- From: ebgb@textmode.net [mailto:ebgb@textmode.net] Sent: Friday, May 24, 2002 8:24 AM To: Ecto Subject: Re: Accordians -- you decide. I'm particularly fond of Jason Webley (www.jasonwebley.com) - I certainly wouldn't consider him "ecto", but he's a Seattle local who plays at most of the music festivals and things around here, and has gathered a somewhat cultish following of teens. I prefer when he play 21+ clubs, myself, you get to do without the worship... He variously plays accordion, piano, and guitar, and has an eclectic, undefinable music style. A lot of people mistake him for Tom Waits, if that helps. - -Kat ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 May 2002 23:06:44 +0000 From: ebgb@textmode.net Subject: String Cheese Incident 'lo.
