I think so, as they've made their first available through cdbaby and this new single, too. The new one really is wonderful. I feel so lucky that it just arrived at my house. Ectophiles might be interested to know that there are several familiar names who worked on the disc: Eric Rosse helped produce, Trey Gunn and Matt Chamberlain play.... I just thought I'd give a heads up to those of you coming to Philadelphia for Projektfest or the Project Lo concert: at both of these shows (as well as the Rasputina show on 5/30) I'll be giving away sampler cds by a fabulous local band, Trace Fury. I'm really sorry I haven't had the chance to post about them sooner... The group is led by two girls, Chrissy Loftus and Nina Prendergast, who share the duties on vocals and piano. The rest of the band is rounded out with drums bass and saxophone. Their sound shows the usual influences you might expect from such a line-up (i.e. Tori) and some you might not expect (i.e. Bjork and maybe a little King Crimson). I first discovered them when Sarah Fimm came to town to play at the release party for their debut album Ankle Deep. Since then I've seen them play live about six or seven times (at this point they only seem to be able to get gigs in bars...the nicest venue I seen them in was the Khyber). Rather than try to give on of my incoherent explanations of their sound, I suggest you visit their website and listen for yourself: www.tracefury.com And if anyone would like one of the samplers, please mail me off list (mythosidhe@hotmail.com) so I can have some idea of how many I need to get from Nina. They welcome everyone to the shows, but I think many attend because it's a social gathering spot, not because they know anything about the artists, so as a result some of the shows I've seen there have lacked electricity due to tepid crowd response. The last show I saw there was Kinnie Starr, and the audience response was pathetic compared to the wild reaction she usually evokes. The decor is fairly upscale and clean but it feels rather stiff to me. Sightlines are good. The food and drink are overpriced so I recommend eating elsewhere before the show if you have time. I'd categorize the place along the same lines as Joe's Pub, which I also dislike for its prices. I've seen both Anne Heaton and Rachel Sage. Neither are really my cup of tea but both put on very good performances, so I'd recommend seeing them for yourself. These artists tend to be a little more laid back so Makor may actually be an OK venue to see them in if you don't mind a low-key experience. I hope that mixed review helps. :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 18:31:14 +0200 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?Ren=E9_-_Speaking_Terms?= Subject: A Book of Dreams - Peter Reich + Under Byen Hello all! Delurking briefly, my question to the Ecto hivemind is, in a nutshell, this: would it be worth the price to spend a small fortune (we're talking 150+ US dollars here) on a copy of Peter Reich's "A Book of Dreams" of KaTe/Cloudbusting fame? No Danish library seems capable of locating the book for me, and although I confess to being extremely curious about its content (since about, ohh, 1985!), I am reluctant to fork over that much cash without hearing a bit more about it - and I'm sure many of you lovely people have read it. On a more topical note, the wonderfully weird Danish band Under Byen have a new album out, called "Det er mig der holder trferne sammen" ("I'm the one holding all the trees together"). Fans of quirky, wistful, Nordic, Stina Nordenstam/Bjork-y music should take note. Sadly, online sound clips are difficult to locate for non-Scandinavians: the band website at www.underbyen.dk is in Danish only, and is ridiculously slow at first (you spend far too long looking at a toy rabbit before anything happens. The music is quite good, though. About how long does >each person play for? I've seen dozens of indiegrrl shows, and sets have usually ranged from 40 to 60 minutes each, depending on how many artists are on the bill, and *who* is on the bill... some indiegrrl shows clearly have a headliner, so that artist usually has a longer set, typically 60-to-90 minutes, but at some indiegrrl shows, each artist has the same set length. It's not unusual (nor is it the "norm") for each artist to have their own set, followed by a closing set with some collaboration, similar to Voices On The Verge. Indiegrrl is a music networking, promotion, and production organization for indie women artists. An "indiegrrl show" is simply a show with artists who are official "indiegrrl" members (which involves submitting their work to a committee for review, and if accepted, paying a yearly membership fee), so there is no typical indiegrrl show format; the format varies depending on the artists on the bill, and the venue. >Also, does anyone know anything about this place? I wish I could help, but I've never heard of the venue. ~walkabout ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 18:53:47 +0100 From: Chris Morriss Subject: Re: A Book of Dreams - Peter Reich + Under Byen In message <006e01c201ae$18359fe0$c88c2fc3@s132332>, Reni - Speaking Terms writes >Hello all! > >Delurking briefly, my question to the Ecto hivemind is, in a nutshell, this: >would it be worth the price to spend a small fortune (we're talking 150+ US >dollars here) on a copy of Peter Reich's "A Book of Dreams" of >KaTe/Cloudbusting fame? Since I love them so much I offered to hand them out at some local events, since most of the band members are under 21 and can't get into many local venues (such as the Tin Angel--grrrr). BUT!!! if you really really want one in the mail I'll see what I can do :-) In the mean time you can listen to some of their songs on the Trace Fury mp3 page: www.mp3.com/TraceFury. The opener was the Philadelphia "dream pop" band Eltro, which I would have liked a lot better without vocals. The two women singers gave the music a pretentious and morose effect, heightened by their stiffness onstage. I don't think it will win back any of the people who don't like her pop over-produced recent albums, but I actually find it catchier than the last couple of albums--produced and poppy, but Heather's voice glides over it well. One of the best songs on the album is the stripped down "Tested" which starts out--"simplicity is what we need and I know it in my heart" which features just Heather and her acoustic guitar. Her cover of Gloomy Sunday is also quite good, though the vocals at the beginning are uncannily like Sinead's. Jeff Hanson n.p. Heather Nova - South n.r. I've been meaning to express this same sentiment regarding Heather Nova's _South_, in hopes of balancing much of the bad rap the album has received here. Sure, it could be thought of a pop album all around, but within that framework the music is damn good, and, above all, Heather's voice is as good as ever, if not better. The album does have a slightly different flavor than _Siren_, and in some respects _Siren_ could be thought of as more over-produced, but _South_ has its own flavor, all cohesive, and, again, Heather's voice is as good as ever. If you won't mind allowing the artist to evolve, to embark in her own artistic journey, even if the latter mileposts seem to bear dollar signs, you will really enjoy this album, as have I. Besides, it's all a virus of the mind, and she's probably pretty happy living in her own sweet time. :) - - Bill G. np: Loreena McKennitt - The Visit ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 23:13:24 -0400 From: meredith Subject: christine fellows tour dates Hi, You heard it here first (I'll be posting this on christinefellows.com by the weekend): > Christine Fellows June 2002 Routing > > all dates listed are confirmed except Kingston... > > > Fri.
