I recently learned that a favorite LP of mine that was discontinued in the '80s, Leah Kunkel's "I Run With Trouble," was actually produced as a CD in Japan. I haven't gotten into digitalizing vinyl, so I went hunting for this CD edition of "I Run With Trouble." To make a long story short, I found the CD online at a music store in France. So here we have a CD by an American musician, produced in Japan, sold at a record store in France, and ending up in the United States. A saga only an Ectophile could appreciate. Has anyone had similar experiences tracking down a CD? - --Bill n.p. She also mentioned that it will be at least a year before she considers coming back to the states, as it has generally been a money losing proposition for her :( neal np: Where We Live - Tanya Savory ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 May 2002 16:01:08 -0600 From: Neal Copperman Subject: Northside is Evil! I was glancing at the Northside website the other day, and found they have started a weekly sale that is going to bury me in CD's. For those not in the know, Northside is home to all things Nordic in the US. If that sounds even slightly interesting, check out http://www.noside.com and order any one of the Nordic Roots samplers. They are all great, and all cost $5. The sale they are having is not some piddly 10% off deal. No, every week (every week!), they offer up a new set of 5 CD's at $5 a pop. It looks like it's 3 Northside CD's, one Omnium CD, and one oddity that I don't fully understand. This week it's: Sorten Muld Groupa Sari & Mari Kaasinen (A traditional Christmas disc featuring two of the leaders of Vartina.) Henry Cow Tiger Moth (This sounds really cool. I never even heard of these guys before.) Ok, so I was iffy on the Christmas disc, but since I was going to get 4 anyway, I'll spring for it. Last week I bought the latest Hedningarna, the latest Wimme, an old Residents CD. They also had a Vartina disc that I already own and a 3 Mustaphas 3 offshoot that I wasn't too interested in. neal np: Laurianne Fiorentino and Michael Kott house concert (this was a completely brilliant show. It's the second time Laurianne has played for us, but this time she brought cellist Michael Kott with her. He pushed her music to a whole different level. The cello swelling and filling Jeff's place was amazing. And their version of Happy Birthday [to Jeff], set to the tune of The Star Spangled Banner, was a total surprise.) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 May 2002 15:38:44 -0700 From: Allan Anderson Subject: Re: next Veda Album > did anyone else have a similar reaction? yeah, I listened to it with a ho-hum attitude over the course of a few months...then started to play it constantly. There's quite a variety of sound, but this is the only track that really catches my ears. - ----------- Sarah Slean, _Night Bugs_ Much to my surprise, I quite like this. After not liking the ep or, actually, _Blue Parade_ that much, and especially as I had adored adored _adored_ _Universe_, I was hesitant to get this and almost didn't. But I really quite like the songs, as long as I don't listen too closely to the overstylized vocals (cabaret stylings always sound a little warbly/constipated to me) and I don't expect to hear _Universe_-type singing and songs. So anyway, once I get past my own memories, I find this an interesting album with intriguing sounds and strong songwriting. If this were the first thing of hers I had heard, I'd be recommending it all over the place. - ----------- Two Loons for Tea, _Looking for Landmarks_ (not yet released, but a two-track single is available at cdbaby.com) Layered with sound, powerfully guitar-based, and bound together with Sarah Scott's yearning raspy-honey voice, this album is a wonder, a sophomore album that plays on all the strengths of their first album. The tunes and lyrics are catchy; the production is rich and detailed but never cluttered. Each song is individual but adds up to a whole--an album to listen to obsessively. These songs are beautiful, memorable, earthy, light and dark and all colours, and they'll take you places as you listen. These songs are edgy and familiar, carefully constructed and layered with sound and yet still fresh and alive with a sense that they haven't been worked to death and allow for serendipity and the delights of invention. I was picking lavender blossoms when I listened to this disc for the first time, which somehow seemed appropriate--something familiar and yet powerfully fresh and spicy. This is clearly the next step in their musical journey. I would say that this is more or that this is better than their first, except in no way would I want to denigrate that first album, which I love and can play to death with no worries of ever tiring of it. I would say there's more variety in this, except there's plenty of variety in the first album too. I know that I'll be able to play this one as much and as obsessively as their first--if not more. - ----------- - --Neile ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 May 2002 15:56:57 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: next Veda Album Allan Anderson wrote: >did anyone else have a similar reaction? >yeah, I listened to it with a ho-hum attitude over the course of a >few months...then started to play it constantly. "under my radar >and into my heart" Which one are you talking about in particular? Actually, it has been that way with all of her albums for me--I always immediately like them, but get more and more enthusiastic about them the more I hear them until I suddenly adore them. Each one of them has to build for me. My theory is that it's because her songwriting is unusual--it takes a while to be able to really _hear_ it. And gradually, I grow to adore them all. HELLP What I am looking for at this time is some help in making this mini tour work. 1.I need to know if anyone in the area would like a house concert on either Saturday night, Sunday night or Monday night... 2. I need some ideas on some small Eugene clubs (usually play WoW Hall but with my audience at the fair, i think a smaller venue, all the way down to a coffee shop would be more tasty) 3. and if folks in Eugene area think people will still go out to house concerts and clubs while the fair is going. I thought, since the fair closes around 6 each night and kicks everyone out, well they got to go somewhere...and do something....plus, since I will be getting these folks 11 hours up north, that we should play more. Any ideas would help. I shall reward you with rare Cyo and Blind cuts...I would not turn down a floor to sleep on either, (horrible allergies up there and cannot camp in the grass in the summer). thanks so much, cyoakha grace I will be bringing myself, Krystov on dulcimer/didg/sitar, Roland on hand drums....I may bring bass or not, an excellent Celtic violinist or not, a second drummer or not, all depending on gigs, places to crash and size of venues...so 4 to 5 folks at most. > O'Manion Music PO Box 198 Mill Valley, CA 94941 cyo@landoftheblind.com http://www.landoftheblind.com ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #140 **************************
