Kate lived in our area for many years, and I've seen many of her performances. She's a very intelligent, accomplished folk performer with some great songs. Plus she plays her guitar upside down! She did a performance at the Kennedy Center's millenium stage that you can view online: http://www.kennedy-center.org/programs/millennium/artist_detail.cfm?artist_id=MCDONNELLK - --Valerie Richardson ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 May 2002 10:49:27 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Have you seen....? The New Haven Folk Alliance has had her play a monthly concert on her own, as well as with a group she used to do stuff with when she lived in New Haven called Colossal Olive. We've got her booked for the Friday night song circle at this year's Eli Whitney Folk Festival, too (with Greg Greenway and Trina Hamlin, yay). She's a pretty solid performer. Not the type that I'll go to see if I'm not involved in putting on the show, but I think she'd do a good house concert for you. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 May 2002 08:05:46 -0700 From: Allan Anderson Subject: RE: next Veda album? Thanks for the tips, folks. and of course I shall get THEM ALL! this is the magnificent Veda we are talking about. just gonna get them bit by bit on my student budget. It's possible that what makes "field study" appeal so much to me was seeing much of it performed at ectofest west. of course, the many subsequent listens to the CD may also be a contributing factor... - -- What feet you have, Vasily Ivanovich. Trina was great as always, Eric Schwartz was unexpectedly enjoyable, but Zoe Lewis just blew me away. The most obvious point of reference would be Susan Werner's goofy and jazzy side, multiplied by a factor of six. Lewis is a diminutive multi-instrumentalist who looks like Patty Larkin and has a real vaudeville thing going. She plays killer jazz/ragtime piano, as well as guitar, harmonica, ukelele (or as she introduced it, "my guitar had a baby" :), and her web site says also tin whistle, though she didn't have one the other night. She also makes her own trumpet sounds, and her Louis Armstrong impression puts Susan's to shame. I'm definitely going to see her again. (See http://www.provincetown.net/zoe/ for more info. CD Baby also has sound samples.) As for the show itself, it was great. Trina, Zoe and Eric Schwartz each did a short set on their own, then after a break they came back and jammed on one another's songs in the round. That *rocked*. Schwartz played bass and piano, Lewis played guitar, harmonica and djembe, and Trina played guitar, harmonica and even djembe as well. At one point, Zoe and Trina were doing something like dueling harmonicas. :) This year's "Most Wanted Song Swap" at Falcon Ridge is shaping up to be a highlight of the festival. All ectophiles who are going please report in here -- maybe we can actually set up an ecto camp this year! :) ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 May 2002 12:24:48 -0700 From: damon of the tentacle Subject: Re: next Veda album? speaking of veda albums, i must admit i still need to give _field study_ a few more listens. i've loved veda ever since i heard some students do a cover of `precious heart' at a residence `talent night' at university in 1994; their rendition was... well, not exactly flattering... but still the song grabbed me and i had to find out who made it. and i've gobbled up each new instalment in the hille oeuvre. anyway, i saw her perform _field study_ live here twice - once before starting out on her tour with it and once afterwards - and was totally entranced both times. it's beautiful, powerful, classic veda material. but when i popped in the cd, my immediate reaction was negative, and i know precisely why - it's because the live performance *was* so moving. and i found the additions and substitutions on the cd just detracted from the experience. i guess the two things that stand out for me are the accompaniment on `birdsong' - it was so powerful when it was just veda's voice, and the rest of it seems reminiscent of the `electronic noodlings' meth doesn't like on YDNLITWA; though i love that album i'm not a huge fan of the noodlings either. and the real standout was `tuktoyaktuk hymn', which brought me to tears when veda played it on the piano live; the organ, though possibly more representative, really doesn't do that for me and i think i missed the emotional context. did anyone else have a similar reaction? i want to stress, overall i still love the album, and i found most if not all the tracks just as powerful as could be expected after seeing them live with visuals; it was just those two that stuck in my proverbial craw. last time i listened to it i found they bugged me a lot less than they had on my initial listens; when i cycle back around to giving it another listen i fully expect i'll wonder why i objected so strongly at first. but i still found the reaction kind of interesting. - -damon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 May 2002 00:00:08 +0100 From: "Simon Barker" Subject: Louisa John-Krol - Ariel A few weeks ago this CD dropped through my letterbox. Either I've started ordering CDs im my sleep, or Louisa decided to send it to me (all the way from Australia to the UK) out of generosity. Assuming the latter, I figured the least I could do would be to write a review of it for Ecto. Ariel is certainly more polished than Alexandria (which I did pay for some while ago). It's hard to pin down this album's style. The forst track, Blackbird, has a distinct resemblance to recent Loreena McKennitt, but others run from pop-rock to etherial (just avoiding straying into twee). I guess my only criticism of this album is that the tracks all seem to blend into each other after a while as the etherial nature takes over. If, like me, you listen to music while doing other things, you could realise at the end of the CD that you'd forgotten you were listening to it. I'm not sure what's normal overseas, but in Australia we value friendly contact in business and free gifts are part of that ethos. In this case it's led to more people discovering the ethereal label Prikosnovenie, or simply keeping in touch.
