I have to agree with the Guardian critic (today's paper) that gave her Manchester show two nights ago three (out of five) stars. First off, the tickets clearly read no support, no interval. There was both. I wonder what happened. I'll write more about the support later -- I'm about to go to lunch. Anyway... Merchant seemed to be in an up mood, but things seemed disjointed. When she spoke, she really seemed disjointed, and she didn't speak very much, btw. I was rather surprised, to be honest. I guess I expected more patter, and I thought there might be some politics mentioned. My husband is less familiar with her work than I am. He admitted having difficult understanding the lyrics a good chunk of the time. (Geez, are we getting old or what? :) She did play nicely to the crowd. (And there was a large crowd of happy fans -- it was a full house at the Royal Albert Hall.) She did her usual walking downstage left and right to sing directly to the fans on the side, which they loved. It was a good show, but it wasn't remarkable. I guess I like to hear more inter-song patter, and I enjoy it when it's purposeful. Interestingly enough, there was a guy handing out Gemma Hayes samplers as we left -- five one minute or so snippets from the album out at the end of the month. More later when I have more time. Hello folks, Well, the calendar says that Spring has arrived so up here in the Great White North it's time to emerge from our huts and get back to work. Actually, over the past few months we've been working like demons on our latest project, Open Road, which is now for sale in The Junk Store. Open Road is a two-disc set made up of one DVD and one CD. The DVD contains three hours of content spread over four separate sections. Section One is a beautifully-filmed live performance that we gave last summer in Quebec City. Section Two is an hour-long, behind-the-scenes documentary about the Open Road tour (we used our personal photos, video, drawings and music, all created while on tour, to give you an intimate look at our life on the road). Section Three is another excellently-filmed forty-minute acoustic performance by Michael and Margo. Section Four is a filmed conversation with Margo and Michael about the writing and recording of Open (it also includes three songs performanced acoustically). The CD contained in the Open Road package is a live CD recorded during the Open Road Tour in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Brussels and Paris. It is an hour-long disc and an excellent representation of what you might have heard had you been in the audience for one of the shows. We tried to capture the spirit of an entire show; we included the elegant (Witches, Thousand Year Prayer, Something More Besides You, Escape Is So Simple, This Street), the rocking (Murder Tonight In The Trailer Park, Bread & Wine, Anniversary Song) and, of course the psychedelic (a twelve minute version of Dragging Hooks and an extended, ten minute workout on Lay It Down). It is a proud addition to our catalogue. For more information on Open Road, including detailed content as well video and audio samples, please check the Open Road section on our site at: http://www.cowboyjunkies.com/exclusives/dvd/index.html Also, if you purchase Open Road from the Junk Store between May 7 - June 24, we will place your name in a draw, which will make you eligible for one of five prizes: four of the five prizes are two tickets to a Cowboy Junkies concert of your choice. The first prize is two tickets as well as an original watercolour painting by brother Pete (all the prize details can also be found on the site in the Open Road section). Open Road is currently available in The Junk Store as a pre-sale item. This means that you can place an order today but we won't be shipping it to you until June 25th (or earlier if our stock comes in). We won't charge your credit card until we ship it to you, but by ordering Open Road as a pre-sale item it puts your name in the prize draw and it helps us figure out how many DVDs we'll need...so everyone wins. It will be released world-wide and will be available in most decent music stores by the early summer, but why wait? You can be the first on your block to own it by ordering through us. And we sure would prefer that you buy it directly from us - heck, we paid for the damn thing, why give your money to someone else and besides we bet you won't be able to find it cheaper anywhere else. We're selling it for CDN$28, which is about US$19 - four hours of music and video for 19 bucks....a bargain by any standard. The Junk Store (our online store) can be found at: http://www.maplemusic.com/dept.asp?dept_id=1 Thanks for taking the time to read this. We hope you enjoy Open Road......for us, it was quite a ride. Margo Timmins P.S. Oh ya....you should also be aware that starting May 9, we will be on the road this spring/summer. Please make sure that you check the Tour Dates page (http://www.cowboyjunkies.com/exclusives/tourdates/index.html) as we will be updating as gigs get booked. - ----- End forwarded message ----- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 May 2002 21:19:30 -0400 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: [recks@aol.com: dorothy scott gig] If you're in NYC you should try to catch this show!
