The Tin Angel is in a fine part of town (so far as Philly goes, anyway) surrounded by trendy resturaunts, nightclubs and pubs. There's even an excellent used book store not three blocks away. That's just my opinion of course; being a local girl I don't feel the intimidation some equate with this city...just be glad their not playing at Doc Watson's :-) >I plan on leaving plenty early. You could arrive now, and you still would end up with a crappy seat because you didn't eat at the overrated, criminally overpriced restaurant downstairs (Serrano's). Serrano's and the Tin Angel have one of the most annoying rackets going. You can't reserve a seat for the show upstairs unless you reserve for dinner downstairs. Of course, there are exceptions, like the time we did drop the required cash on dinner and *still* ended up sitting way in the back. :P :P :P In case you can't tell, I hate the Tin Angel. The people there seem to want to go out of their way to piss me off. However, I'm still planning on being there to see Happy. I'm harboring hope that they don't screw their customers quite as badly now as in the past. :} ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html =======Next Up: Jessica Weiser 5/12/02======== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 May 2002 02:53:03 +1200 From: "Karen Hester" Subject: hype and easy listening Norah Jones Kia Ora, just got an email-ad from a local record store saying the 'extraordinary Norah Jones' is on the cover of their magazine .. and she is being hyped on NZ national radio, alongside other pleasant non-stupid easy listening music for grown-ups. Some of my non-music geek friends were wondering why they don't find her interesting - what's wrong with me? - since the media coverage has spread so far - it really isn't fair on a young artist, is it?! I think most of the Norah-hype is due to the background music quality that Lisa mentions. The melodies are so direct and don't do anything you don't expect, so the music borne on a sweet voice can slip into people's daily lives in an easy and pleasant way. Musicians like David Grey and Eva Cassidy and Enya and Dido have all crossed over and sold millions more silently than Rolling Stone cover stars do, by appealing to moms&dads & non-teenagers & non-music-addicts. Here Norah Jones is being advertised as mother's day fodder. It's like cafe music or hair-dresser music - not muzak, but something that sustains the soul or mood without furthering it or making you feel emotions that will get in the way of the conversation you're having or the coffee you're drinking. Not that you can't get more out of such music, and many people here do, but the high sales are due to having crossed over into the realm of those who only buy a few cds for the background of their lives. Which is a fair enough use for music. Plus I reckon critics always feel pleased when they like something on the border of a cool genre like jazz. None of this pesky dealing with the intricities of the purer form and its history and musical structures - let's have pop with a coating of class. They love attractive artists who combine popular music with a musical form of higher calibre than full-out pop; they think to themselves 'Shelby Lynn has the gritty naturalism of country but she's also rock so she's cool and I'm cool for noticing', even if the artist in question is crap (which Norah isn't). I reckon Norah Jones has a future - being on the Blue Note roster will ensure musical & emotional growth. Karen >Date: Thu, 09 May 2002 10:35:40 -0400 >From: JavaHo@aol.com >Well, not quite. I did pick up Norah Jones at Borders a couple of weeks ago. It was on a listening station, and it was cheap. The little bits I heard worked for me on the level of her vocal quality if not the songs. I knew nothing about her and hadn't heard any of the hype. No...it didn't knock me out. It's not that kind of album. It works very well as a slinky, smokey, jazzy album. It's very much a background music type of thing. Nice and relaxing to listen to while reading a book or just lounging on your patio. There are a couple of places where her voice evoked Kathleen Wilhoite (very under-rated, and I would love to hear more from her). I think I would classify it as Ecto Lounge music. There is nothing here that will grab you or have you humming it later in the day. If you approach this release with that understanding, it might work for you. > >Hey...it was cheap, and it doesn't totally suck. > >Back to lurkdom...Lisa ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 May 2002 18:10:12 -0700 From: "Angel's Shadow" Subject: Re: Nevermore How do you get a copy of this cd?
