Thanks, Karen ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 May 2002 12:54:17 +0100 (BST) From: adamk@zoom.co.uk Subject: Indigo Girls live in London The girls did their second gig in London last night, at the Forum in Kentish Town. Opening for them was Pina and Cara Dillon. This seemed a much more relaxed show than the one a couple of months ago at the Shepherds Bush Empire -- although they played lots of tracks from the new album, there didn't seem to be a pressing desire to push it quite so much, and a lot of the old songs got performed, as well. It was good to hear "Jonas and Ezekial" (sorry, this is one of my faves) and the song whose title I completely forget from Strange Fire (Second Guess?). Unlike the Empire show, they performed totally solo (duo?), only bringing on a violinist from Cara Dillon's band and having Cara and Pina on for added vocals on a couple of songs towards the end. For me, the major problem was the sound. The Forum is a massive old dance hall, offering the acoustic intimacy of an aircraft hangar. At the Bush I couldn't see, at the Forum I couldn't hear. Poor Pina, stranded onstage alone for her brief set, suffered badly, but the Girls didn't do too much better -- their inter-song banter was completely lost, and I couldn't have been more than 30 feet away (or maybe I'm just going deaf). The only big mistake they made was performing the (IMHO) dreary and tuneless "Andy", which led to outbreaks of turned heads and conversations throughout the crowd as attention drifted away. Still, it was a great night -- they always look as if they're fully enjoying performing, enjoy each other and enjoy the audience. Amy looked stunning, I have to say. I am, however ITCHING to see them with a full band again. Did you make it, Ellen? Completely arbitrary addendum: I've never quite understood why "Galileo" has become such a popular tune for them. At both of the last gigs, people were yelling out for it, as it were "Freebird". I like it, sure, but I've never rated it as one of their best. It obviously touches a chord in a whole lot of people. Any comments? adamk np - 1000 kisses, Patty Griffin (how did you know, hester? yes, I'll post a review soon, but very much IMHO) Get your own zoom email - click here - http://www.zoom.co.uk/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 May 2002 05:11:31 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Subject: Re: Indigo Girls live in London - --- adamk@zoom.co.uk wrote: > -- > although they played lots of tracks from the new > album, > there didn't seem to be a pressing desire to push it > quite > so much, and a lot of the old songs got performed, > as > well. Yes, I noticed that. Perhaps they read the Guardian review that criticised them for apologising too much for playing new songs. It was good to hear "Jonas and Ezekial" > (sorry, this > is one of my faves) and the song whose title I > completely > forget from Strange Fire (Second Guess?). Hey, they admitted they barely remembered it. I have to go back to Strange Fire to get the title. I just remembered it was from Strange Fire... Unlike For me, the major problem was the > sound. Awful, awful, awful. The sound was better for the Indigos, but it was HORRID for Pina and Cara. Ian (my husband) was ready to go back and mix the sound himself. I had better sound with my fingers over my ears on those two. I really wanted to hear Pina, but... And I know Cara Dillon has a beautiful voice; too bad we only got to hear it at the very end. The sound mix was waaaay off for the opening acts. It only worked on their high notes. > but the Girls didn't do too much better -- their > inter-song > banter was completely lost, and I couldn't have been > more > than 30 feet away (or maybe I'm just going deaf). I was closer -- about five feet from the stage. I caught the inter-song banter. However, I still thought the sound sucked overall. > The only > big mistake they made was performing the (IMHO) > dreary and > tuneless "Andy", which led to outbreaks of turned > heads and > conversations throughout the crowd as attention > drifted > away. I had hoped that Amy's bit about not getting a non-smoking room in the hotel would have encouraged some of the smokers to put out their cigarettes. I'm still adjusting to seeing shows surrounded by smoke. I have a cold and major allergy problems right now -- the smoke really bugged me last night. > Did you make it, Ellen? Yes. I'm dyin' out here in the midwest with no new Happy (or anything else, for that matter). Well, not quite. I did pick up Norah Jones at Borders a couple of weeks ago. It was on a listening station, and it was cheap. The little bits I heard worked for me on the level of her vocal quality if not the songs. I knew nothing about her and hadn't heard any of the hype. No...it didn't knock me out. It's not that kind of album. It works very well as a slinky, smokey, jazzy album. It's very much a background music type of thing. Nice and relaxing to listen to while reading a book or just lounging on your patio. There are a couple of places where her voice evoked Kathleen Wilhoite (very under-rated, and I would love to hear more from her). I think I would classify it as Ecto Lounge music. There is nothing here that will grab you or have you humming it later in the day. If you approach this release with that understanding, it might work for you. The sentiment in that song is just amazing. It also happens to be a remarkable melody and showcase for her voice. I know she feels that it doesn't quite make it .Perhaps if enough of us "chime" in on the subject ,she might someday reconsider. My own opinion is that it is a "hit" song just waiting for a little push to get out there. It is really so hauntingly beautiful!! It's been in my "car rotation" since it was released, and I'm not sick of it yet. It's a very strong batch of songs, tuneful, spare, and so strong, lyrically. I have a lot of favorite songs, "Widow's Walk," "(I'll Never Be) Your Maggie May," "Soap and Water," "If I Were a Weapon..." but my current favorite is "Last Year's Troubles." Terrific lyrics, great tune... a good example of all the things Suzanne does so well. I have enjoyed all of Suzanne's albums to varying degrees. That was in an interview, or a net thing with fans, that someone here posted a link to. I thought it was interesting, because I don't think of upbeat songs as being a rarity for her. It's a kind of earthy pop. Or pop-tinged (or pop-disguised) earthiness. It's not pop, it's not folk, it's not folk-pop, but it has elements of all those. I think the title is fitting.
