I've been wondering the same thing. On the basis of all the reviews I read, I purchased her first CD (now out of print), which was simply her demo tape packaged for retail sale. It was good, but my reaction did not match the critics' response. I've not heard her current studio release... maybe it's better than her TV appearances. >What am I missing? Recently they recorded a live show with the plan of making a CD from it. The bad news is that they weren't happy with how the vocals turned out and aren't going to use that recording to make a CD. The good news is that they still put up a couple tracks from that show as samples on their web site, including a recent song "Sleep Now" that I absolutely love. So if you're curious, bop over to: http://tympanicband.com/music.html and you can download that MP3 along with some others. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 May 2002 01:23:54 +0000 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Reasons to Give Norah Jones Some Time Hi, Boys and Girls, Here are some reasons for giving Norah Jones a few years to grow before we decide she is the flavor of the month melting on the sidewalk of Pop Stardom. 1. She is 21, I think. 2. She has a distinctive voice. 3. She is trying to write her own songs. I know, most ecto favorites are songwriters too. But how many of the singers tapped for the top forty aspire to write songs? 4. She comes across as a mensch in the few interviews I've read. 5. She studied jazz piano at the University of North Texas, thus allowing me to claim her as a hometown girl. Reasons for the big media push: 1. She is 21. 2. She has a distinctive voice. 3. She's the daughter of Ravi Shankar. 4. She is easy on the eyes. 5. People are sick of Britney and Christina? 6. A record company has dollars in its eyes. I think Norah Jones has legs. She'll be around for a while. Probably, though, Rolling Stone will forget her in six months. Bye, Lyle wp: _Ecto_. I just got back from a last minute trip out to Denver and was flipping through the local weekly and noticed that Libby Kirkpatrick http://www.libbykirkpatrick.com/ was playing on Thursday in Boulder...I picked up her debut album a few years ago in SanFran and remembered liking it a lot but not really listening to it much. I trekked out to Boulder to catch the show and was totally blown away...she weaves her own blend of ethereal folk (is that a genre?) that is quite magnificent. At times reminiscent of Patty Griffin, Sarah Slean, or Jonatha Brooke she floated, weaved, and played vocal gymnastics through her set. Other discs I am obsessing about but havent had time to blither: Sia - Healing is Difficult (she had some of the vocal duties on the Zero 7 album) Louise Goffin - Sometimes a Circle Azure Ray (thanks to whomever plugged their albums :) ) Liz Janes - done gone fire Cheers Jason (who doesn't really want to put any artist in a blender) n.p. A couple years ago now (!), a friend dragged me down to The Living Room in NYC to see Libby Kirkpatrick. We ended up missing half her set, but I remember being impressed. She hasn't played much around here since then that I know of, though. Does she have a new CD out? I saw Libby a year or so ago too and was really wow'ed by her. I didn't pick up her CD at the time, but have toyed with ordering it over the years. Back then, she was hawking a new live CD. No idea what she's got now (and I too am too lazy to look!). Libby's also associated with the Little Red Hen collective who blew Jeff and I away at Folk Alliance. Some subset of the Hen's play around NYC a fair amount, so you might want to look into them (http://www.littleredhenmusic.com). BTW, someone (Joann?) mentioned Bird York. Jeff lent me her first CD months ago, and I've listened to it a few dozen times. I really like it. It's got an edgy, almost-rock quality, interesting songs and a pretty distinct sound. I haven't listened to the samples of the new songs on her web site, but I'm on the verge of buying a copy of the first disc for myself (meaning I like it enough to pay for it rather then just copy it). neal np: lost & found - Eliza Gilkyson nr: Crank! magazine, issue 1 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 May 2002 01:35:09 -0700 From: "abaton" Subject: Marianne Nowottny CBGB Goth Night Hi everyone, Marianne Nowottny will be performing on Monday May 13th at CBGB's 313 gallery. This blonde beauty and idiosyncratic young visionary continues to write and sing a canon of almost hermetically personal songs that are like nothing else on Earth.
