I just saw them in Eugene last night and enjoyed them quite a bit. They're touring with a somewhat spare three-piece lineup, but it sounded pretty good. They had an opener called "Jim and Jennie and the Pine Tops" which was a pretty good bluegrass band, except that the traditional whiny twangy bluegrass vocal style really grates on me so I tried to enjoy the playing while enduring the singing. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 May 2002 18:04:22 -0400 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: new albums, disappointment, etc I too was disappointed by this album, "My Shirt Looks Good On You." Well, maybe disappointed isn't the right word, because it implies my expectations weren't met, and I'm not sure what, if anything, my expectations were. After all, I didn't like her previous album, "Crash Course In Roses," much at all, only mildly liked a few songs. That album was a disappointment, to me, because I really liked her previous one, the self-titled "Catie Curtis," so I was excited when I heard there was a new album. This one, MSLGOY, I'd read good reviews of and was hoping I'd like more than the last one (similar to how I enjoy Lucy Kaplansky's new one but utterly hated the one before that). But no such luck. It just doesn't do anything at all for me. It's nice, it's pleasant. But it doesn't stick in my head, and nothing about it gives me the urge to put it on and listen to it again. It just makes me want to put on her other albums. I guess her pop-folk path isn't working for me, and I'll go get her first 2 albums on cd finally and enjoy those. I have similar feelings about the new Indigo Girls album. It's really nice. It's pleasant. It's a lot more than that. It's very good. I've enjoyed it when I listen to it. But it's not, to me, special the way I would have liked. I can think of so many Indigo Girls songs off the top of my head and start singing along (not out loud; I'm at work). Even songs I don't like, such as "Jonas and Ezekial," "Romeo and Juliet," "Go," and the third track from "Shaming of the Sun" which I can never remember the title of. These were sounds I didn't like. But at least they were memorable. The new songs, I can't really think of how they go. To be fair, I've only listened to the album a couple of times, and not recently. But what's telling about that is that I would have expected (yes, expected) an Indigo Girls album to inspire me to listen to it more. Now if someone else had recorded this new album, "Become You," I would probably think it was quite good. I mean, I do think it is good, but I would probably think it was more special and listen to it a lot more than I do. Karen Hester wrote: "perhaps it is telling that no one on ecto has mentioned Patty Griffin's 1000 Kisses - if it is indeed beyond criticism and a gift from a superior being, someone on ecto would have noticed it!" Patty Griffin's new one, 1000 Kisses, I haven't listened to a lot yet, maybe only twice. I think stylistically it's somewhere in between her first two albums, "Living with Ghosts" and "Flaming Red." Closer to folk and folk/pop than folk/pop/rock. And my appreciation for it is somewhere in between too. "LwG" is a no question five star album for me. "FR" is a three star, and "1000 Kisses" is a solid four star. The first song, "Rain" is gorgeous. So are "Be Careful," and "Long Ride Home," which features vocals by Emmylou Harris. Her singing in Spanish on the title track, "Mil Besos," is pretty good, though you can tell it's not her first language. I've never seen Patty live so my impressions are only based on the record. (she's going to my alma mater, Oberlin, this month, 2 1/2 years after I graduated). Perfect? No. Beyond criticism? No. But what criticism? A few more listens, and maybe I'll have some. JoAnn Was playing when I started typing this morning: Edie Carey, "The Falling Places" Np: Hannah Fury, "The Thing That Feels" Wonderful, especially the gorgeous piano, but I like "Soul Poison" better, more... gutsy? insidious? disturbed? More powerful, somehow, though this might be more beautiful. - -----Original Message----- From: Ellen [mailto:silme13@yahoo.com] Sent: Saturday, May 04, 2002 6:14 AM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: Re: re being a fan/being objective - --- Karen Hester wrote: Sometimes a different > arrangement reveals a facet of a > song that makes the recording bloom anew when you > return to it. I really loved the previous one -- thought it was her strongest work to date. However, I decided to attend her recent London gig because I hadn't seen her in a while. I was pleasantly surprised that the new songs sounded a lot better live than they do on CD. Of course, I've felt that way about Susan Werner for a while. I recently reviewed *New Non-Fiction* for a webzine, and I had to admit that while wasn't thrilled with the CD, I'd love to try out the songs live since I've always liked her better live. However, I don't think she's heading across the pond any time in the near future. (Overall, I felt this recent CD sounds like she's desperately searching for her niche.) I'm also disappointed that the Indigo Girls and the Be Good Tanyas (along with some other fine acts) are playing the Sunday of the Cambridge Folk Fest. Attending that day would mean that I would miss the orientation for a professional, job-related workshop I'm attending that week in London. However, yesterday's Guardian revealed further BGT tour dates in the UK. After Glastonbury, which I'm also missing, they're on a short tour as follows: 2 July: Bristol 4 July: Glasgow 5 July: Sheffield 6 July: Leicester 7 July: London (Union Chapel) 8 July: Newcastle 9 July: Chester 10 July: Milton Keynes (actually Wavenden -- The Stables) And I'm seeing the Indigo Girls -- with Pina and Cara Dillon as support -- on the 8th in London. Oh, and a quick mention of Catie's opening act -- Donna Dean. She's from New Zealand, but I never would have guessed it until she spoke. Her first two songs (done without any introductions, etc.) were country western, and her singing voice had a decided twang to it. Ellen ===== "Literature stops in 1100. I'm always curious about people's reaction to my music, positive or negative. No, I don't owe anyone anything, and I'm free to make the music I want to make. But then a fan doesn't owe me anything either -- people shouldn't feel obliged to love my third CD just because they thought my first one was wonderful. I should hope that by then I've earned enough trust in fans to give a new release enough time to grow on them; I hope that they'd say "okay, I'm not sure where she's going with this, but I'll listen to it a couple more times." If they decide that they just don't like it, though, no one can accuse them of disloyalty. Of course, my ego is as bruise-able as anyone else's, and it hurts when someone whose opinion I respect doesn't like the work I've done. But I'll always hear out the criticism, and I'll always go for honesty over blind devotion. Ectophiles listen to "thinking music," right? Heaven forbid we should stop thinking about the music we listen to. ;^) - - Vienna - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joseph Zitt" To: Cc: Sent: Friday, May 03, 2002 9:45 AM Subject: Re: Being a fan/being objective > On Fri, May 03, 2002 at 09:05:22AM +0100, adamk@zoom.co.uk wrote: > > > I am, I'm afraid to say, one of the dissenters, which > > brings me (finally) to my point: It feels churlish to > > criticise, it feels ungrateful.
