According to the MOBY website MOBYLICIOUS (http://www.mobymusic.com) the song is credited to MOBY. At least the lyrics were. Of course he could easily have sampled any number of sources for sounds of the song, I don't have the liner notes to the album because it isn't released yet. MOBY has said that he was inspired by DAVID BOWIE'S BERLIN period in an interview with VIRGIN MEGASTORE (http://virginmega.com/default.asp?aid=848) so perhaps the sound was reminded your friend of that. And the correct song title is WE ARE ALL MADE OF STARS. His album 18 gets released on MAY 14th here in the states and it's definitely a grower of an album. The first time I listened to it, I thought it was too derivative of PLAY, but the more I listen, the more it has grow on me. I love it now. It's a very moody mellow work. I had originally thought the albums was recorded post SEPT 11, but it turns out the songs were written and recorded before hand, though he did tweak a few lyrics in light of what had happened, and a lot of the songs seemed to take on different meanings since then. He stated in the above interview that he certainly picked and sequenced the songs with the state of mind that he had, post SEPT 11. I think is shows in the album. Of ecto note, there is a song that features SINEAD O'CONNOR as well as song that features a singer named AZURE RAY who I originally thought was SINEAD. I think that song with AZURE (THE GREAT ESCAPE) is actually a better song than the one that SINEAD sings (HARBOUR). Oh well. ANGIE STONE and MC LYTE also are on a song called JAM FOR THE LADIES which is quite a fun song. It was a great show, but I'm a bit disappointed in the Deep Natural release--particularly since the best songs on it are rerecordings of songs on her Good News album (which she only sold at concerts a couple years back--Neal picked me up one). The rest of the stuff is good, but a bit funky and doesn't capture her charm. Wow, that totally surprises me. (Jeff, in return, picked this up for me. I'm travelling at the moment, so I haven't heard it.) Since Good News came out, I have seen Michelle twice. A few years ago she did a show that consisted of 3 hours of brand new music. Last year, she did a show that had almost no overlap with the previous one, and had more new music. I can't believe after 6 years, she would put out an album of previously recorded material. (Granted, that album had absolutely no distribution, but it still seems odd to me.) She was selling the Dub album at her shows last year, and it is ok. But it is almost all instrumental with only some vocal snippets on it. It's ok to listen to, but I'd probably think of it like Jane Siberry's A Day in the Life (though I personally really enjoy listening to Jane's album, it's not what I would give to anyone to introduce her). That's a real shame too, cause a lot of that new music she played was stuff I liked better then the Good News songs. Ah well, still looking forward to hearing it. neal ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 May 2002 21:06:00 -0000 From: "neal copperman" Subject: Re: attachments I'm late weighing in on this tangent as I'm on the road and not really keeping up on e-mail... andrew fries said: > In other words, you can spend those $40 on Norton AntiVirus, and then > keep downloading security updates every other day. I'm not interested in attacking any OS at the moment :) I have a Mac at home, but use a ton of Windows stuff at work. I would suggest that if you are running Windows and are using a non-MS mailtool (which is a good idea), uninstall the MS ones. There are viruses that specifically target Outlook and Outlook Express that will send stuff to whatever is in the address book files for those tools, or by using the executable from those tools. If you run one of these worms and don't have either version of Outlook on your computer, they will not propagate. (They may still affect your OS though.) So I've heard it, but only 3 times. Only once yesterday when I started this message, and then twice this morning. For the record, I bought the album as a fan of Susana's, not for the Bjvrk cover, though I was intrigued by the sticker on the album that sad she was covering "Anchor song". I've been a fan of Susana's since her self-titled album in 1997, and that's still my favorite, though I now have all of her other albums (not including _Lamento Negro_, which I read was not an official or authorized release of hers). At any rate, the Bjvrk cover. I can't describe it as a cover, because I'm not familiar with the song. _Debut_ is the one Bjvrk album I sold back. I listened to a 30 second clip of it online, but that only had horns, no vocals. There are no horns in Susana's version. I think it's quite lovely. She writes in the liner notes about liking that minimal way of making music and feeling she could make it her own. And I definitely hear that in the song. It's pretty spare, there's a give and take between Susana's vocals and the instrumentals (I'm not sure what instruments I'm hearing: accordion? Cello? Or maybe keyboard?). There's a beauty in the simplicity of the sonic textures, the repeated sequence of falling notes at the beginning, which changes to rising notes after the vocals begin, has a subtly sensual quality. Like hips swaying in a long, loose skirt. It doesn't sound particularly Spanish or Latin, or particularly any other culture. The other instruments (guitar, etc) add some Latin hints.
