Symantec's website has this to say about W32.Klez: "The worm exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express in an attempt to execute itself when you open or even preview the message." In other words, you can spend those $40 on Norton AntiVirus, and then keep downloading security updates every other day. Or you can take a truly pro-active approach and stop using software that compromises your security in the first place. Just stop using Microsoft's Outlook - God knows there's no shortage of decent and free mail programs out there. I have not had a single virus infection in my 6+ years on the Net, and over 10 years of not using Microsoft's software :) np: October Project, self-titled - ---------------------------------------------------------------- "I'm out of bed and I'm dressed, what more do you want?" - spotted on a T-shirt - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Apr 2002 08:00:42 -0400 From: marasu@hotmail.com Subject: off-topic Re: attachments Actually, the downloading the updates is not complicated, but even other mail utilities can't help if you download and accidentally execute evil code. - -- Mark Susskind now playing: PJ Harvey: 4-Track Demos - ----- Original Message ----- Wrom: IYZUNNYCGPKYLEJGDGVCJVTLBXFGGMEPYO Sent: Saturday, April 27, 2002 4:18 AM > In other words, you can spend those $40 on Norton AntiVirus, and then > keep downloading security updates every other day. I can't say if it is interesting / possible to order from abroad ( I do live in Belgium ) but the times that I have ordered stuff I haven't had any problems at all. Anyway, they are big enough and should be save. Alternative source I've found : http://www.musicselection.com/ ( search : "lunascape" ) ( don't believe it when they say it's a band from Holland, it's definitely a Belgian band :) ) Inigo > I finally got around to checking this and I have to say, it *is* really > nice. Yup. Fortunately, most mail programs pretty much can't accidentally execute evil code. It's never happened to me here on this Linux box. And while downloading Microsoft updates may be simple (dunno, never had a reason to try), they are notoriously slow at admitting bugs and creating patches. n.p.: Arvo Part/John Taverner: Out of the Night - -- | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt/ http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Apr 2002 14:39:44 -0500 From: Greg Shell Subject: Re: attachments At 27 April 2002, andrew fries wrote: >"The worm exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook and Outlook >Express in an attempt to execute itself when you open or even preview >the message." > >I have not had a single virus infection in my 6+ years on the Net, and >over 10 years of not using Microsoft's software :) It is weird that the solution is so simple yet so few actually take advantage of it. gSs ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Apr 2002 16:03:27 -0400 From: "Mark Susskind" Subject: still Re: off-topic: attachments Well -- I was referring to the Symantec/Norton anti-virus and security updates. Microsoft *does* seem to be rather slow in their own enlightenment. And I was referring to the *user* downloading and accidentally executing evil code, not the mail program itself, unless you set the mail program to automatically download attachments. I'm pretty sure that there might be someone out there looking to defeat other mail programs. They have all played in New York City recently, and I managed to give two of them a heads-up about Ecto. I don't know if they have ever been mentioned here before; sadly, I can only read so much of Ecto Discussion List.
