In my opinion the new Sarah Slean cd is tops..full of passion, beauty and great tunes. I thought Blue Parade was nice but a bit bloodless. The new one rocks my world. On first listen, Night Bugs seemed like a real disappointment, but it has begun to grow on me with additional plays. I remember hating Blue Parade on first listen because I though it was overproduced compared to Universe, but within a couple of weeks I had really warmed up to it, and it went on to become my favorite album that year. I don't think I've listened to Night Bugs enough to decide how I really feel about it yet, but that in itself is a bit of an ominous sign since any other Slean CD would have been burned into my memory from repeated plays after having owned it for a month. I think the cabaret style vocals would have provided terrific spice if she had used them in just one song, but in this case, I think too much spice has probably bogged down the overall recipe. It would be easy to point blame at the major label for the change in Sarah's direction, but I don't think that's the case this time. As I understand it, Atlantic actually wanted to team her up with a big-name producer to record the album (I don't know who), but Sarah insisted on working with Toronto producer Hawksley Workman, who had no major production credits on his resume. Atlantic apparently conceded, and I believe it was Workman who was largely responsible for Sarah's new sound on Night Bugs. In fact, every time I listen to the album, I feel like I'm listening to Hawksely as much as I am to Sarah, and I can't help but feel some resentment towards the producer for his overbearing influence. If the story is true, then it leaves me with some mixed feelings. On one hand, I wonder if I would have liked Night Bugs better if Atlantic had insisted on having Sarah work with the star producer of their choice. On the other hand, that's the kind meddling from the major labels that I object to in principle, so I admire Sarah for standing up to Atlantic and telling them she's going to make her own decisions about her music and choice of producer, even if it resulted in an album that sounds different than I had hoped for. If true, it may aslo explain why Atlantic ended up canceling the U.S. release of the album. That's total speculation on my part though - I really have no idea if that's the case. The bottom line is, even though Night Bugs isn't, and probably never will be my favorite Slean album, it does have its moments. I don't think it as easy to listen to in its entirety as her first two releases, but the songs are good even if the production is odd, and the album fits well in the CD changer. Having seen Sarah perform live recently, I also think Night Bugs is an accurate representation of where she is now. Clearly, she's still experimenting and growing artistically, and while this album may be commercially risky, I think it's artistically interesting. Given the speed at which her sound has evolved, I'm already looking forward to hearing what her next step will be. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2002 18:27:51 -0400 From: "dave" Subject: attachments dmw wrote: > it's come to my attention that at least a couple of people with whom i > share mailing list subscriptions are getting things that look like > e-mails with attachments from me. these are forgeries. in at least once > case the apparent originating address has been defunct for years. There's a new version of the W32.Klez worm going around that does something like this, the worst thing about it is that it's capable of executing even if you don't open the email attachment, just previewing the email can be enough. Check www.symantec.com or other antivirus sites for more about it.. Might not be the culprit here, but it's a rather nasty bug, with wide distribution and it's difficult to remove, so it bears checking out. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Apr 2002 01:11:45 +0000 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Denton Arts and Jazz Festival Greetings, If any of you are bored and want to listen to jazz and rock music this weekend, go to www.kntu.unt.edu and listen to KNTU. The station is broadcasting live from the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival. Tonight at 9 PM Central time, the Wayne Shorter Quartet plays. Saturday night at 9 PM Central time, Brave Combo plays. Other groups will be playing on the webcast/radio; I don't have a schedule in hand. But just tune in randomly and see what's on. It is well worth a listen. And speaking of neocabaret, I think Little Jack Melody and His Young Turks have the market sewn up. I get to attend his set tomorrow in Civic Center Park. Too bad they don't broadcast his band. It is worth it just to hear Little Jack's bizarre and humorous ramblings between songs. I've gotten it about 10 times in the past two days. Fortunately, Norton AntiVirus has been catching it and allowing me to delete the attachment immediately. I'm finding that this doesn't necessarily go without saying, so: everyone, PLEASE invest in anti-virus software! It's the best $25 to $40 you'll ever spend.
