Especially relevant given the recent EMI debacle, which they responded to by saying.....what? "We need to cultivate some real talent"? Noooo. Their response was actually more along the lines of "Megastars! We need more MEGASTARS!!!". Nice knowing you, EMI - shut the door on your way out. The situation over here across the pond is pretty bad, with pre-fab bands dropping out of some suit's arse after every heavy meal. The "Popstars" phenonemon being the most cynical manifestation of the whole thing, and the most depressing. Sure, every now and then someone jumps up and sneers "Oh, but there have ALWAYS been pre-fab bands". But even the Monkees had SOMETHING going for them, while today you don't even have to be able to sing in tune -- the studio can fix it up, thicken the voice up, make you sound like Caruso at the flick of switch. No talent need apply. I have no illusions -- I grew up in suburban America in the 70's, a time of Bobby Sherman, Paper Lace and the Partridge Family. But that's what AM radio was for -- if you wanted more grown-up fare, there was FM radio. Today (hang on, sonny, I'm almost done)even the non-teenybop music has fallen prey to the fervent, grasping desperately wild-eyed search for "the next big thing" ("Oh, just what I wanted -- ANOTHER cover article on the Strokes"). Do I feel sorry for EMI? Do I bugger. adam k. Hi all, One of the messages I sent to the list last night was actually a mistake... the 'Off Topic, Cello Players' one... I was in the process of deleting old messages, and somehow hit the wrong button, thereby fwd'ing a personal e-mail that had been lurking in my 'Drafts' box for a couple of years! Thanks--except that I didn't buy one (I wish! =) ), I was looking for players for the album. I didn't end up using cello on the album, but there are 3 songs with a gorgeous violin which I am thrilled about. She did a great job. Actually the album is done and will be available for $15 around 5/15. It's called After Silence, there are 10 tracks (1 song is a Neil Young cover) and I'm very happy with it. It is more rock/pop and has a band on basically every song except one... but the songs turned out well and I can't wait to play the songs live. It is *nothing* like the other 2 albums I put out--those were just practice ;) Jess www.jessicaweiser.com | www.aftersilence.net ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 02:17:12 -0400 From: Ted Jacobs Subject: Re: current state of music business I feel somewhat vindicated now, since I took a lot of fuzzy blue heat on this topic. Maybe Woj or Meth can confirm? majordomo on smoe has been set up to remove all attachments in a message sent to ecto. however, it can not do the same for messages sent directly to an ecto subscriber. i know i received a message from tim directly which contained the virus, but i do not believe that ecto got that message as well (and if it had, the virus would have been stripped out anyways). woj ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 11:34:29 -0400 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: anne heaton Oh, wow, I just heard Anne Heaton for the first time. Spending my day off ambling around CD Baby, listening to different artists, and a lot of it is nice, a lot of it is pleasant, well-done, some more interesting than others, but not much of it is grabbing me. I'm going down my list of people to check out, I get to "H", click on "Take Your Desire," wait for it to start up, and oh wow, what a surprise, what a joy! Is this the real deal, or just one really great song starting off an album of mediocre followers? I click on "Your Heart Is For Breaking." Wow again. I'm ordering this TODAY. The new CD, Black Notebook, is so great (even if it does include that damnable wedding song *again*). Anne had her CD release in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago (in the no PA Bazaar Cafe). It's was great. - -troy (always with an editorial comment) JoAnn Whetsell wrote: > > Oh, wow, I just heard Anne Heaton for the first time. You won't be disappointed. The entire album is just as good as what you heard (though I agree with Troy about "that damnable wedding song" -- I hope Megan and Kevin are getting royalties out of the thing :). While Anne's previous two releases failed to live up to the promise of her live performance (which is always really, really good, especially when she's got Frank Marotta Jr. playing guitar with her), _Black Notebook_ finally delivers the goods. It's a very well-produced album, and has lots of infectious stuff on it. Anyone who wants to check Anne out can do so, opening for the Nields in New Haven on Sunday (hinthinthint ). ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======Next Up: N&K Nields 4/21/02====== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #111 **************************
