Can I just say that I have SO MANY artist that I keep on buying CD's from and never really like them, but for whatever reason I keep on purchasing thinking something will click.... HEIDI BERRY is one of the, who in my ears, is EXTREMELY generic ecto bland, yet for the longest time, whenever she released something, I snatched it up. I finally stopped (or maybe she stopped releasing stuff I dunno) but I know I have three or four albums, and maybe even a promo ep of hers. The other one that comes to mind was a group called DOWNY MILDEW. I discovered them when I was DJing in college and they were constantly being compared to 10000 MANIACS at the radio station, but really they weren't all that good. At least I didn't think so. I dunno. Neverthless I first acquired a couple of tapes of theirs, and then kept on finding them in the used bin, so I ended up purchasing the CD version as well! Never really liked them all that well.... Finally stopped buying them after four albums, but again, maybe it was because they stop releasing stuff. Grr....What's wrong with me? It's not like I even liked the bands above in "theory" like I like some bands. (STEREOLAB being the perfect example. I like them in theory, but really I only need two or three STEREOLAB albums in my collection and that is enough. Something about listening to their songs being great in theory, but in reality, they loop two or five or seven times too many for me to be able to stand them all that much for an extended period of time). Nope HEIDI BERRY and DOWN MILDEW just sort of collect dust. Anyone wanna set up a trade? I am sure there are more in my collection.... irvin ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Apr 2002 04:47:20 -0700 (PST) From: Paul Blair Subject: The man who fell to Gaul Suddenly, without warning, I find myself in Paris. This is the European Community, right? So far, I've found a tribute album for Autour de Lucie, and a French version of Bel Canto's _Images_ (originally _Rush_, I think--does that mean I'm missing tracks from the original?) Can't seem to find Bel Canto's newest (_Retrospect_) anywhere, or Anneli Drecker's album, or any Velvet Belly. So what good is the EC anyway? What do I care if FNAC carries Voices on the Verge (no, really)--I can get that at home! I've visited three FNACs, Gibert Joseph and a bunch of smaller places, but if anyone has any suggestions of places in Paris ith good selections, please post them. I've still got one more day here... You're thinking of the Austin Lounge Lizards, who covered "Brain Damage / Lunar Eclipse" on their 1996 Flying Fish album "Lizard Vision" (which somehow managed to stow away in my briefcase from Colorado to Tennessee this weekend). Sure enough, it's played triple-time on banjo with genre-appropriate ornamentation, including good'ol boys hootin' and laughin' between repetitions of "The lunatic is in mah head." How is it that other ectophiles get to answer questions about rising-star ectoeclectronic bands heard on car commercials, and I get to confirm references to bluegrass covers of rock songs nearly as old as I am? :-) If anyone has not yet bought a copy of Susan McKeown's "Prophecy," what are you waiting for? Just the experience of having an Emily Dickinson poem get stuck in that place in your head where that d*mned remix of "Walk Like an Egyptian" usually lodges is worth the price of admission. Subject: New Indigo Girls, etc Okay, maybe not so new, but I've been listening and listening to Becoming You over the last few days trying to form a definite opinion......and have failed. It's not that I don't like the album -- I do; there's nothing really to dislike (well, apart maybe from the extremely cheesy sax solo on "You've Got to Show") but..... "Swamp Ophelia" I loved instantly; "Shaming of the Sun" took me longer, but I quickly fell in love with it, and rate 98% of it as among the best material they've ever done; "Come On Now Social" I still think is extremely patchy, containing some of the best ("Go" and "Faye Tucker") with the worst ("Andy" and "Ozalline" -- the latter being just one in a series of rather 2-dimensional fireside toe-tappers and hand-clappers that filled the majority of the album that, while on the whole not unenjoyable, I didn't feel were worthy of their lyrical talents). Phew. Sorry about the parenthetical digression there. So, we didn't see them for six years, and when they finally appeared in London last year, they previewed most of this album, and it sounded good. And it is. It's fine. But.....I don't know. While there's nothing wrong with the album, there's nothing that excites me, nothing that compels me, no one song that (so far) makes me want to hear it again. It's all very pleasant, very artful, very.....smoooooooth. It's as if the album was created especially with easy-listening radio in mind. Beautiful? Sure. But I keep waiting for the jagged edge, the patch of raw emotion to surface. Maybe if I keep listening to it, it will. Meanwhile, my top release so far is still (despite all I said about their live show) the Dear Janes' "Skirt", in which BJ Cole, Billy Bragg and Ian Mclagan put in little cameos. It doesn't quite keep the stunning pace that the first four songs set, but it's still a great little album. Other catch-ups include the Muttonbirds' 1999 release, their most recent, "rain, steam and speed", which is also highly recommended. A New Zealand band, they're brilliant live, and this has to be their best release so far (are they still going? anyone know if there's anything else in the pipeline?). The best comparison I could make is the old tired one of REM, but it's a pretty accurate one, and they're well worth checking out --- especially this. There's also the completely non-ecto final release from Brit band Tiger, also from 1999. Tiger came onto the scene in '96, in the post-Britpop, lo-fi craze. Skewed, fractured and delightfully dumb. Their last cd, before they broke up, is called Rosaria, and sounds something like the Neutral Milk Hotel meets the B52's with a dash of the Fall and a guest appearance by Syd Barrett. Infuriating, stupid, but really infectious fun. I noticed that the Tragically Hip have made it to the ecto guide. Fine by me. Just one listen to "Ahead by a Century" or "Wheat Kings" proves the case for their inclusion, but I don't think they've really matched the brilliance of "Fully Completely", and their albums since then have been pretty patchy, never quite cutting it. They're also responsible for one of the worst concert experiences I've ever had -- stupidly finding myself right down the front for what I thought would be a low-key gig, I was tossed from side to side by demented, moshing, Canadian fans who seemed to be there purely to act as one mindless throng. The Hip, meanwhile, went through their set, spread out across the stage and ignoring each other as if they weren't even in the same band. The danger of being thrown about and losing the floor entirely was the most exciting thing about the whole set. Oddly, despite knowing almost all their output to date, I was unmoved. In contrast, the opening band, totally unknown to me, sent small, thrilled shivers through me, as the lead singer even tooted on his euphonium (there just aren't enough of those in rock today). The band was the Muttonbirds. Check 'em out. Okay, time for a nice sit down and a cup of tea. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Apr 2002 14:50:46 +0000 From: ebgb@textmode.net Subject: Re: Eileen Rose, Natalie Merchant On Sat, Apr 13, 2002 at 08:04:38AM -0700, Ellen Rawson wrote: > Too much music, too little time and money... I've walked out on only two over the years. The first was around '69, I had wanted to see the MC5 for a while but the city fathers at a number of venues always banned them, forcing substitution by other local talent like Bob Seger or the Amboy Dukes. I finally saw them at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit and walked out after about 15 minutes of pure noise.......ugh. The second was about 10 years ago at a Joan Baez show. After a very short set dozens of fans ran up to the stage and threw red roses up to the stage. When she came back on stage she kicked all the flowers into the audience and announced that she was going to have just her band play the rest of the show. I left. On the other hand, I saw Kate Rusby at a small venue in Ann Arbor last thursday and it was a great show. She played for over 2 1/2 hours with only a short break in the middle. She and her two bandmembers ( one her husband John) are very funny, telling little stories and jokes between songs. (a bit like Jonatha Brooke does her shows). It's missing the artwork and liner notes, but all the music is there. Since an ectophile who will remain nameless (his initials are jw ;) asked me to pick him up a copy, and then discovered Rachael would be playing near him last night so went and got his own copy anyway, I have an extra. While I'm sure woj wouldn't mind us each having our own private copy to obsess over, I thought I'd offer it up here. It doesn't go on sale until late May, so this is a special deal! (I'm sure Rachael will hook us promo-buyers up with the liner notes later.) So, if you'd like your very own copy of _Illusion's Carnival_, just drop me a line. I paid $10 for it, so either that amount plus shipping or a suitable trade will do. The album, btw, is AMAZING. It takes up where _Painting of a Painting_ left off and dammit, she just keeps on getting better! Strings, gorgeous wavering voice, melodic antique music about misery and Jezebels and naughtiness. Yummy. Samples at www.lindi.org and www.mp3.com/lindi Lindi's debut is charming, this is music which makes mundane emotions seem magic and poetic. She has an otherworldly voice and the lovely natural band arrangements are hightened by violin, cello and piano, sometimes sounding mediaeval, sometimes from an old music hall, chamber-music pop. Lindi sounds very young on some of the lesser tracks like 'Coffee Shops,' with its somewhat pedestrian lyrics & rhymes ("feels so good to be 21, laughing at the absurdity of life, I'm drunk enough to fall in love, floating on the wings of a dove.."). I don't think the peace plea "A little peace" shows particular insight, though the guitar is strummed giddily like a mandolin, giving the song age. Othertimes she seems older and wiser - an affection for melancholy (which in less aware hands could stumble), is expressed so beautifully in the declaration "Misery my love", reminding me lyrically of Mylene Farmer's sublime pop "Je t'aime melancolie". Engagement with sadness is raised to the most loving level in "Nothing at all" with "I know it hurts, I know how hard your fall, it could be worse, you could be feeling nothing at all," offering honest comforts against soaring strings. "Tomorrow you'll say goodbye" and "Lipstick traces" could successfully be sung in a world-weary & wise Lucinda Williams way, though Lindi never slides into country as the songs would let her. The sauntering old circus fairground music of "Sweet Jezebel" is the centrepiece of the album - "Burn with the witches, you know them well", the only song with lyrics printed in the booklet. Musically its from the world of Mary Lydia Ryan's "Devil with wings", and I can imagine an over-the-top lush remake like Sarah Slean's new stuff. They're interesting to compare - Lindi with her voice fluttering with wings, and Sarah with such a new vibrato, one which sounds learned. I love both voices, though Lindi is newer to music and her album has some of the weaknesses of beginnings. I can easily imagine a wise failed sotted French-woman in Lindi's head as well, her music is very theatrical.
