I've only listened to the whole thing a few times, and got stuck on the title track (Become You, number 3) and then on 10 and 11, which I don't remember the names of. I am singing along to those few songs. I think there have always been and continue to be good sing-along songs on IG albums. And I like that it is less electric. That just didn't work for me with them. Anyway, i think this one is beautiful. And its not non-political, I don't know if Amy could do that, its just less blatant about it. I am also really enjoying the sampler I got from Luaka Bop at Folk Alliance. Its called All Our Bunnies in a Row and has a picture of a package of those pink marshmallow easter bunnies on it. The first song is from the upcoming Zap Mama album and it has a bunch of other great stuff on it, too. Ending with David Byrne. As for how it is, heaven is the only word. It's all the best stuff she's been doing for the past 2-3 years. Sloan is Sloan. It's smoking the robin's nest! Also - Susan McKeown has a new one out called PROPHECY, her first album since BONES (1995) to feature all contemporary stuff as opposed to Celtic traditionals, Peter & Wendy or the other fine stuff she's been doing. Very exciting stuff. The second song, "River," is apparently charting in Ireland and/or the UK. She does have a distributor over there and you can get the disc in stores. In the US it's still being shopped, but you can order it from the http://www.susanmckeown.com website. It's just excellent. I don't have it in front of me but I can submit a Guide entry later. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2002 16:53:10 -0000 From: "neal copperman" Subject: Re: Bunnies Jessica Byers said: > I am also really enjoying the sampler I got from Luaka Bop at Folk > Alliance. I got another Zap Mama disc there, one of re-mixes, which isn't that exciting (though I kind of like the track where we get Michael Franti of Spearhead thrown into the mix). But the track from the forthcoming album is really exciting. There's also a really nice new Susana Baca track that is cool. All in all, a very nice sampler. neal np: no other - hansford rowe ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2002 15:24:36 -0800 From: irvin lin Subject: LORI CARSON | LISA LOEB | IDA Hey. I just got an email from LORI CARSON who said she will be hosting a couple of songwriter's workshops (small groups limit 10 I think). I know there are plenty of artists and musicians in this group that might be interested.... If anyone wants details, feel free to email me, and I'll forward the email to you. Also you can find the info on her website (www.loricarson.com). In the meanwhile, I recently acquired CAKE AND PIE by LISA LOEB and someone else mentioned it. I haven't been overly enthralled with it, but still it stays in the CD player. Not quite sure why. I guess it's because it mixes well with the new IDA that I have (well LIZ MITCHELL from IDA used to be in a group with LISA LOEB called LIZ AND LISA so that makes sense I guess). Anyway if you like LISA I think this is pretty much an extension of her music, no huge jump stylistically. I want to say it's a bit overproduced, but I've always found her music to be a bit overproduced. Heh. Not that I don't enjoy it. Just a little glossy for me. The new IDA CD is pretty good though. Just a remix-y thing. Apparently they gave WARN DEFEVER the tapes from their major label recording days and told him to go and remix the songs that started with the letters "SH" so the album is called SHHH... and it has four versions of SHRUG and two versions of SHOTGUN and some other songs thrown in. TRINA SHOEMAKER's mix of SHRUG is great - as is WARN DEFEVER's remix of SHOTGUN. Not a great start for people who don't know who IDA are, but definitely something a fan might want to pick up. IDA, by the way, are often referred to as a "quiet-core" band. Originally on JENNY TOOMEY's (TSUNAMI, LIQUORICE, GRENADINE, GEEK, SLACK and solo) label SIMPLE MACHINES, IDA were originally signed to CAPITOL (I believe) after JENNY dissolved SIMPLE MACHINES. They recorded hundreds of hours of tapes and then the whole label merger thing happened and they were left in limbo. They eventually were let out of said limbo while still owning the masters from their session and have released two CD's from that period on TIGERSTYLE a small label out of NY's SOHO district. The original two principle members of IDA are LIZ and DAN used to play with LISA LOEB back in their college days and if you listen closely, they played on LISA's first album TAILS. Anwyay you can get it online at timestereo.com which I believe is WARN DEFEVER's side project label. You can get tons of HIS NAME IS ALIVE stuff on the site as well. I think they mention that they will be releasing KING OF SWEET soon as well as a bunch of other stuff that's hard to get. Does anyone have/heard his new album with LORETTA singing? The descriptions of it sounds very interesting, but I think I have always like HNIA more in theory than in practice (though his ode to the beach boys STARS ON ESP is kinda fun).
