We had a great show with Eliza Gilkyson tonight. The first surprise we had was when she brought in her CD's and we discovered she had a brand new one. It officially goes on sale April 9, but we've got a big stack of them for sale over at Jeff's house. You can pre-order them from her web site, but I might be convinced to pick up a few for people if there was anyone interested. It's called Lost and Found, and she calls it a kinder, gentler Eliza. She played an excellent set, focusing a lot on songs from Hard Times in Babylon, but mixing in a bunch from the new album, a few songs by her dad, and a smattering of requests from the audience. She's a great storyteller and told lots of humorous anecdotes behind each of her songs. Jeff observed that she was probably the most likely to offend out of anyone we have hosted, and she's also the oldest! She also played a song that she said was brand new and had never been played before. We'll be doing it again tomorrow night, which is a good thing in my book. I taped tonight's show and despite the appearance of a fine recording, it sounds horrible :( So much for having the first performance of her new song on tape. We rarely use a sound system, and I didn't realize I had to flip a switch on the DAT from mic to line-in. Ah well. At least we'll have a second night to get that right. neal np: Angel In The Dark - Laura Nyro ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Mar 2002 22:36:19 EST From: MPressinfo@aol.com Subject: **First Prize: Satellite/Rachael Sage Spring Tour Info** Hey y'all - we were just about to check in with a list of updated Spring Tour Dates, when we got some exciting news! Subject: it's an ecto london scene (grooovy baby!) ahem. In the middle of crushing deadlines and hysterical pressure at work, I've managed to see two concerts this week, and I still can't help but feel I'm getting too old for this. Tuesday saw me at the Borderline for Witness. They turned out a great album last year, a blinding slice of Americana, the sort of album that REM can only dream of these days. Not bad for a band from Wigan. Unfortunately, it didn't sell very well, and their label --- Island - --- promptly dropped them. Hence this re-scheduled gig, which was great. They played new songs which instantly appealed (always a good sign, I feel) and performed with energy and joy, free from the posturing or whining that seems prevailant. I still highly recommend their two albums, "Before the Calm" and "Under a Sun", and hope that they get a deal soon. Thursday I was back at the 12 Bar Club for Veda Hille. I got to talk to her before the gig, and she sat at my table and ate as I.....well, talked AT her. I was tired and I guess nerves took over, and I must have come across as a nutter ("I'm your greatest fan" kinda thing). Well, maybe not that bad, but I couldn't have done much for her digestion. She was great though -- very patient and responsive, despite pre-show nerves. Opening act Katie Carr was impressive, a sort of Steeleye Span meets Tori Amos kind of show, accompanied by an acoustic guitarist and a violinist. Intriguing enough to make me buy the cd, anyway. Veda played two sets -- a sort of "greatest hits" first, then a multi-media presentation of "Field Study". This is still, despite repeated attempts, far from my favourite album of hers, and I'm not sure that the show did much to change my mind -- it's still a work I can respect rather than like. I'm glad I got a chance to see her do it live, though, and the audience (apart from the twat next to me who decided there was no better way to spend a night out than texting on his mobile phone) certainly appreciated it. For the encore, she performed Abba's "Mamma Mia" in tribute to her host, Matthew Woodhead. Now, I've never, ever, been an Abba fan, not even in my most ironic of moods, but I actually found myself thinking "Hey, this is GOOD!". A lovely rendition of "Precious Heart" made my night, for sure. My only caveat, really, is that I missed her guitar, which I think is a wondrous thing. Meanwhile, the Indigo Girls are back in town on May 8th, and I've just received my copy of their latest. Hurrah! And Cara Dillon is opening for them!!! I missed Veda Hille due to work insanity. But I saw Thea Gilmore at the Borderline the week before, and it was a good show. Listening to her lyrics makes it hard to believe she's only 23... Rebecca Hollweg, her opening act, shows promise. I need to book Catie Curtis tix -- she's at the Borderline in late April. Hurrah! I'd be curious to know what people on this list think of this. It's definitely a step back towards their older sound, more rootsy and less electric. I really love Amy's songs on this album. Emily's too, although it's taking me longer to get into hers. Something about her songwriting's changed, and I can't quite put my finger on what it is. Anyways. This is just me babbling - I'm definitely interested in hearing other opinions... BTW I wanted to quickly plug Australian (I think they're from Brisbane) band george. I saw them live last weekend and they blew me away. The band is fronted by a brother and a sister who trade off singing lead and playing keyboards - there's a bass, guitarist and a drumer as well. The brother sounded (to me at least) vocally exactly like Jeff Buckley, and the sister's got one of those sweet high voices that you ectofolk like so much. :) They were great live. I don't have the album yet due to being dead flat broke but I'm planning to pick it up when I get a chance. Check out www.george.net.au. I read reviews that said it was closer to their "Swamp Ophelia" days, but I'm not sure I'd agree with that, though I wouldn't necessarily disagree either. It is more acoustic, with fewer backing musicians, and different ones than in the past. So it's more like the past as in not really exploring different musical styles and less electric and not really rock, and not really political. I guess it's a little easier to say what it's not like than what it is like. Which may come off sounding like a bad thing, or a not great thing, but I don't mean it that way. It's another strong album. A really strong album. And it's nice that they're still making really good albums. I've only listened to the whole album twice or so, and individual songs a few more times than that, so I'm not singing along, and somehow I think this is not a sing-along album, but it's a lovely album to listen to, and one I think . If you buy it at Borders you can get a bonus disc with an alternate version of "Our Deliverance," a live version of "Everything In Its Own Time," and "Johnny Rottentail," a song from Amy's solo album _Stag_. The first and third are good but not stellar, but the live version of "Everything In Its Own Time" is stunning. It's not one of my favorite songs of theirs, but this version is slow and moody and a bit dark, and I love the cello on it. Basically, if it's got female vocals, it's fair game. She just got handed the job of director of that block of programming, which combined with the fact that a couple of the people in the group are leaving town means that I'll probably get a monthly slot come summer. Yay!! One of the things Sarah likes to do on her show is bring someone in the studio to count down a "top 5". It can be top 5 anything, the songs just have to be sung by women. Tonight she invited me in, and my theme was "top 5 obscure Canadian artists". Here's what I played: 5.) Kym Brown, "ETA" (_Pygmalion_) -- Sarah liked this so much, she borrowed the CD ;) 4.) Mia Sheard, "Cover Girl" (_Reptilian_) -- woj and I are addicted to this disc!!) 3.) Mary Margaret O'Hara, "Dream I Had (1)" (_Apartment Hunting_) 2.) Christine Fellows, "Lost Overtures" (_The Last One Standing_) 1.) Veda Hille, "26 Years" (_Spine_) We got a few phone calls during the segment from people wanting to know where they could get these albums, which was the point, so that made me happy. I stuck around for the rest of the show throwing Sarah CDs, so the greater New Haven area got to hear stuff from the new Sloan Wainwright, Susan McKeown and Susan Werner albums, among other things. Whee! Hopefully I'll be on the air there regularly in a couple months. That would be SO much fun. It's only been 8 years since I last had a regular radio show, which is a *really* long time. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2002 01:09:32 -0500 From: "dave" Subject: Lisa Loeb news Okay, so I was looking around at Borders for some new music and I came across the new Lisa Loeb CD..
