Of course, this doesn't work if your DVD player sends >a copy-protected signal to the VCR, so you need a model on which you can >defeat the copy protection. There is one other option, which I tried briefly: you can send the DVD signal into an RF converter. A/V jacks go from the DVD into the converter, and then an RF cable goes from the converter to the TV. I had to use this option for about a week, between the time I got my DVD player and when my new TV was delivered. The difference: routing through the VCR caused intense variation in brightness and quality to the signal. Routing through the VCR negated the variability of quality, but there was still some noticeable variation to the brightness of the image. So it's not perfect, and I wouldn't even recommend it for long term or for real movie fans. But it is doable. If I'd known about the code-free thing before buying my DVD player, I might have gone that rounte.... Eeep! She ended up being on the air for almost two and a half hours. She and Ruth were having such a good time, that Ruth ended up pre-empting the news show that was supposed to be on at 5:30 in favor of having an extra half hour to chat. I had no idea that Kidjo lives in Brooklyn now. She has a new album coming out in a couple weeks, from which I heard several tracks over the course of the afternoon, and it sounds very good. I'm not sure if it's something I'd listen to a lot, but it was good, bouncy stuff that it would be doing a disservice to label as "Afro-Pop". (In fact, a large part of their conversation centered around how Kidjo hates it when people try to pigeonhole her music, and she's sure that one day she's going to snap in Tower Records and move every one of her CDs from the "World Music" section into "Rock" where it belongs. :) The single features Dave Matthews on vocals, and sounds like it could have "hit" potential, if top-40 radio sees fit to pay attention to something that's not prepackaged teenie dreck for a change. Kidjo brought a guitar player with her (I never did catch his name), and she performed a few songs live. I'd never heard her do anything completely acoustic like that before, and it was neat; though her voice did sound a bit tired, which was weird since I don't think she's touring now or anything. I wish I'd been able to get a recording of it, especially since I missed bits of it here and there, being at work and all. - -- woj looked up Milla's recent musical history, and found out that for a while a few years ago she was the singer in a band called Plastic Has Memory, which performed several times in NYC in 1999. Well, damn. :P Info on her musical exploits is at http://www.millaj.com. You can download clips of her performing with the band, and it sounds like it would've been a great show to see. The description of them on the site, "Joy Division meets Blondie meets The Cure meets New Order" is quite apt. - -- This weekend's New York Times Magazine is the "Music 2002" issue, with a cover story on Moby and articles about the imminent death of the big record labels, female musicians in Lower Manhattan and The Breeders, among other things. I haven't had time to read it carefully yet, but it definitely looks interesting. Change that to: This weekend's New York Times Magazine is the "Music 2002" issue, with a cover story on Moby and articles about the imminent death of the big record labels; female musicians in Lower Manhattan; and The Breeders, among other things. Meaning, of course, that female musicians in Lower Manhattan and The Breeders are not about to die or anything. :} In case anyone was confused by what I originally wrote. As I said: with my black box I get a perfect picture after pushing the signal through 2 VCRs. It is only when the VCR records that the problem pops up. Without the box I get heavy breathing and green lines on simple pass through. I have one friend who has had no problems and another who has only had trouble when he used a Zenith VCR. My problem may lie with my VCRs. I looked for code-free players and found that my Pioneer DV 440 is listed. I can change the code but so far I can't see how to pick no-code. I'm sorry I waited This is lovely ethereal pop, based around John Hodian's piano work and Bet Williams' lovely vocals. She has a rich voice rather like Loreena McKennitt's and with a similar range, and the music overall reminds me a lot at times of Aether's ethereal harp-based music. Bet Williams also has some vocal moves in common with Aether's vocalist. The songwriting and production is also creative. This is a really lovely collection of rich and evocative music. Bet Williams' voice shines and brings these songs to life with the solid background of John Hodian's varied and evocative piano work. There are a couple of songs I don't like quite as much, where the lyrics and melody lines become a little predictable ("Lockerbie" and "Long Gray Line"), but those are small niggles of taste in a remarkable collection that most ectophiles will adore. The album is melodic and pretty and Bet's voice is amazing, which will catch all lovers of strong female vocals, and the songs and sounds are put together in ways that will interest those who prefer less traditional pop. - --Neile ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Mar 2002 23:58:15 -0600 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: odds-n-sods On Sat, Mar 16, 2002 at 03:21:30PM -0500, meredith wrote: > Fervently wishing that Notre Dame had been able to beat Duke just now (even > though it would've screwed my brackets even more than they already are), Not that there's anything wrong with that -- having well-screwed brackets will keep CD racks from falling off the wall. - -- | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems | | http://www.metatronpress.com/nj/smwb.html | | Latest CDs: Collaborations/ All Souls http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #76 *************************
