They do a cover of the Youngblood's "Darkness, Darkness". Elephant Mountain was a favorite of mine back in my college daze, and they did a wonderful arrangement. I have a black box set up between it and my VCR inputs. I can watch a DVD through 2 VCRs to my TV and have no problems at all. A recording made on the VCR ends up with green lines. It is much worse even to watch w/o the black box so I know it is working. Friends with the same black box have no green lines. This is a Pioneer DV440. Has anyone heard anything about this model having more copy guard than others? Should I trade it in? Thanks, bye, Kerry KrW I'm Peter Pan! I'm perpetually young!! OW!! Macrovision copy protection on DVDs has been upgraded from the original version used on VHS tapes, so your old box won't work. Your best bet is to return the Pioneer and get one of the many "code-free" models on the market. Most of them are from Chinese importers like Apex or Sampo, but some of them produce surprisingly good quality output despite their cheap construction. I know some of the Apex models use the exact same video chip found in more expensive Denon models, for instance. Besides bypassing Macrovision, these players have the added benefit of being able to play DVDs from any part of the world. Normally if you buy a DVD player in the U.S., it's designed to only be able to play discs made for the North American market (and likewise for players sold in other parts of the world). If you get one of the code-free models, you'll be able to play discs from overseas. Not a big deal if you only watch movies from Blockbuster, but it could come in very handy if you find a concert video from your favorite British band on a UK web site. You'll need to do some tweaking to take advantage of the full functionality of these models. Usually you have to upgrade the machine's firmware by burning the updated file onto a CD-R and "playing" it in the DVD player. Other players require a new IC chip to be installed, so stay away from those and go for the CD-upgradeable models. The other good thing about these players is that they allow people who don't have anything but an antenna jack on the back of their TV connect a DVD player by routing it through their VCR. Here's how this works. DVD players don't have the RF (cable) outputs that send a signal to channel 3 or 4 on your TV like VCRs do. So if you want to hook a DVD player up to a TV without A/V jacks, you need to send the DVD player's output into the A/V jacks on your VCR, and then use the VCR to feed that signal to channel 3 or 4 on your TV. Of course, this doesn't work if your DVD player sends a copy-protected signal to the VCR, so you need a model on which you can defeat the copy protection. Search the web for "code-free DVD players" to find models and info. The Apex AD-1500 can be made code-free, and is easy to find at chain stores or on the web, but you need to find one within the correct range of serial numbers. There are also some progressive scan models available, but you won't need one of those unless you plan on buying an HDTV set in the near future. Here's a good place to find info on a number of code-free models and the firmware to upgrade them: http://www.dvd-wizards.com/darrenk And before I go, I'd like to encourage everyone here to take a peek at a new web site just launched by the founders of Excite. These guys have started up a fine-looking lobbying group to help protect the public's right to fair and legal recording and use of digital media. It affects music fans like us in particular, as the RIAA and MPAA continue to use every trick in the book to try to eliminate people's rights to record music, video, and soon digital broadcasts, for personal use. This site looks like a well-organized effort to fight back against these Goliaths, and I hope it gains the support it deserves. www.digitalconsumer.org. Best, Dan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Mar 2002 01:36:26 -0500 From: meredith Subject: milla performs on tv! Hi, Last night, woj asked TiVo to grab _Last Call With Carson Daly_, on which Milla Jovovich was scheduled to be the guest. We'd seen her on _The Daily Show_ earlier in the week plugging her new movie _Resident Evil_, and figured it'd be amusing. (She seems to be slightly less stoned in public these days. ) Turns out it's a very good thing we taped it. When the second segment of the interview started (with the intro music being an instrumental bit from "Gentleman Who Fell"), there was a guitar sitting between Milla and Carson, and sure enough, she picked it up and started to play!! She did a song called "Ain't No God For Dogs", which lyrically was a bit silly, but musically was very cool (well, except for the barking and baying bit near the end :). Her voice is as wonderful as ever, and sounded even stronger than on _The Divine Comedy_. She said she's constantly writing and recording music, on everything from minisics to her own answering machine. This of course begs the question "when the hell are you going to do another album", but she didn't give any indication that she's planning on actually releasing anything anytime soon. _The Divine Comedy_ remains one of my very favorite albums ever. It's a shame it doesn't look like we'll be seeing a follow-up, particularly in light of the fact that she's making music all the time. (And yes, I am aware of that strange release that happened a couple years ago. I never got it, and judging from what I heard I guess I didn't miss much.) And as for _Resident Evil_: I'll rent it when it comes out. Milla-as-kickass-action-babe has way too much potential to miss. :) ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #75 *************************
