(not saying that I will either, being virtually un-heard of, but I am trying, hard and full of intent;... "does this line mean what I want it to, is it universal? does it hold mystery for many interpretations? does it come from a strong place? will it hold meaning for many? will it be understood? if it is light is it strong and not wimpy and a turn off? if it is dark does it tap into universal rage and anger rather than straight negativity? what instruments can I use that are new to ears? that bring something exotic and new spice to old formulas? how can I change those musical formulas?" etc...et all ad nasium.. nice to hear what you had to say Andrew. of course people can listen to fluff and dance, why not dance to something besides fluff also? system demands product. product is created, not found. system creates "buzz" around product. product should be harmless and empty of meaning, safe. sell product while buzz is hot. dump when over. copy something else then. do it again. make more money. peace, cyoakha At 01:55 AM 03/09/2002 -0500, you wrote: >Date: Fri, 8 Mar 2002 18:20:29 +1100 >From: Andrew Fries >Subject: Re: Buying BRITNEY... > > >Hmm.. by "manufactured" I tend to mean created in a production line-like process, without investing too much attention or feeling in the process. It might however involve skill, and the results might indeed be "slick". But "well crafted" would actually be the opposite of "manufactured", to me anyway. > >In the words of Stephen L. The sole purpose is to make profit, at all cost. That's all. Bugger the artists, the public, the civil liberties even (as in the case of digital copyright). I am not at all against making profit as a matter of principle; I understand the need to make a living. I just insist business activity should have a meaning, provide some sort of service, satisfy some need. Then, if it brings financial rewards, that's fine with me. But I don't perceive any such value in Brittneys and Eminems. Like the product, the demand is completely manufactured... but does it take skill to produce a Brittney video? Well, sure it does. So what? > >I admit that was not always a major concern for me, but these days I try to look at broader perspective beyond the immediate technical merit. For example I'll admit some of the Linux software I use can lack in polish compared to its Windows counterparts, but I persist with Linux because the social implications, the spirit behind the product mean more to me than pure technical competency. So it is with music. > > >I agree, but the trouble is, dedication and discipline alone leave me pretty cold. Again I have to ask, what are they meant to achieve? Clearly, they achieve a bundle of cash for them, but what do they mean *for me*? It's the same problem I face with the idea of sport. I can see that at the top level it takes a lifetime of dedication and training and even personal sacrifice to achieve results, yet all I can do is scratch my head - where is the purpose? Say, you run around the field a fraction of a second faster than the next guy! How does that benefit anyone, exactly? I know, I know. Example, inspiration, dedication. Yet I think before we get too excited it is a very good idea to keep the bottom line in mind ... some guys are running round and round - that's all. > >The same goes for Brittney. I know perfectly well what she does for the record company, or for herself. CARLA BOZULICH (Gearldine Fibbers) & Friends performing Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger with special guests THE NELS CLINE SINGERS - 7:00 p.m. (18+) & 10:00 p.m. (21+) April 10th Performing at Schubas, 3159 N. Southport in Chicago. The phone # is (773) 525-2508. Tickets are $10 in advance (and available at www.schubas.com ) or $12 at the door. Carla Bozulich and Nels Cline roll thru your town! Carla Bozulich and Friends play Willie Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger." Nels Cline will be backing Carla up on guitar and lap steel with his new trio, The Nels Cline Singers. Both Carla and Nels are members of The (long sleeping) Geraldine Fibbers. Performance of this classic Willie Nelson album is a heartfelt compulsion. It's a very special event, even by these artist's standards, and it's not to be missed. Nels Cline Singers will be opening the show in support of their new album, "Instrumentals" on Cryptogramophone, in stores March 26, 2002. Carla Bozulich has waited impatiently for the right time to do this project. Since The Nels Cline Singers all love the "Red Headed Stranger" album and since there's no better band, the best time is now. She hears this classic album 25 different ways at once, just like a many-pointed star might sound. Set into the vinyl are certain grooves to be explored, but there are oh so many more left to discover. No two shows will be alike. The new arrangements you'll hear at this concert reflect possible risks and variations inspired by the free spirit of the original, and so real album, Willie Nelson's, "Red Headed Stranger." You'll be able to find Bozulich's new rendition of the album in stores in August, on 5RC (a boutique offshoot of the Kill Rock Stars Label). When playing the Red Headed Stranger with The Nels Cline Singers (Nels Cline on guitar with Scott Amendola on drums and Devin Hoff on contrabass), nothing seems too much of a challenge. Masters of improvisation, rocking out and creative music in general, these guys make it easy to go anyplace. Full circle invention subtly wraps around a simple country story of myth and beauty. Diverse, underground tastes in music are a common thread for Carla, Nels, Scott and Devin, and they put it to use here. Cline calls his new trio The Nels Cline Singers even though there are no singers in the band. He calls the album, Instrumentals... well, because there are no singers in the band. Nels displays a mastery of guitar expression that encompasses delicate lyricism, sonic abstractions, and skull crunching flights of fancy, inspiring Jazz Times to call him, "The World's Most Dangerous Guitarist." Los Angeles resident Randi Driscoll, who spent time in 2001 recording in New York City, is going to be back in town to promote her new album The Play. She has gained national recognition for her song "What Matters", from which she gives all proceeds to the Matthew Shepard Foundation and other anti-hate charities. The song is also going to be featured in an upcoming NBC movie about Matthew Shepard's life. (For more info & downloads, visit www.randidriscoll.com) Amy Emerman is a New York City based singer-songwriter who has just begun to take her love of singing and playing to a wider audience. Amy, whose musical influences include Jewel, Patty Griffin and Natalie Merchant, has just cut her work schedule to part-time to make room for music, singing and songwriting to play a larger part in her life. Please come out and support the rise of these talented singer-songwriters! All proceeds go to the artists, and a minimum $5 donation is recommended. There will be some refreshments provided and you are welcome to bring additional food & beverages. Please be good again :) Last time there was a big Buffy thread on this list, it turned out that each series was showing for the first time on television somewhere; the show has had quite a staggered release worldwide, at least on free tv. Anyway, sad to hear the out-of-characterness that was cropping up in the last season here is continuing with the current season 'over there'. I wonder if there is some inherent difficulty in long-running shows when major characters graduate from high school (youth, innocence, school cliques, parental-restrictions as plot device etc) to college/ adulthood. Does anyone think that many shows stumble round there? Maybe our affection is based on the confused and giddy young characters, and some of us become disenchanted when they 'grow up'? Growing up or otherwise changing doesn't have to result in Grumpy-Sour-Responsibility-Buffy though.
