I wouldn't actually PAY money for BRITNEY. So now, to this day, I can still dance a hip hop routine to BRITNEY's I'M A SLAVE 4U even though I learned it back in early DECEMBER. This is the same reason I own both JLo albums. The cover version by FOUNTAIN'S OF WAYNE is great, better than BRITNEY's and does the song better justice.... Which I guess just goes to show that BRITNEY has some great songwriters....even if she can't sing. (unless it's that damn Antares Autotune effect -- talk about a great application of technology gone horribly, horribly, Cheribly wrong!) so try looking at looking at Britney and the rest as performers from some strange ethnic folk tradition. yeah, okay, it may be the luau for the tourists, but some of the torch jugglers and poi pulverizers might be the real thing, and even if they're really from Poughkeepsie, well hey! they're juggling torches! and even if they're not the very best torch jugglers, hmmph, let's see you do it in front of the tourist with your grass skirt only staying on because it's GLUED TO YOUR BODY...! with a "baby, foo me one more tah!", i remain - -g - -- "i have never been afraid to change the circumstances of the world..." - -- Happy Rhodes - -- "except for bunnies..." - -- Anya ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Mar 2002 10:10:31 -0500 From: "maryam mohseni" Subject: I'm new! What I was trying to emphasize but didn't make clear was the zest coming from artificial stimulants, not the soul. Nikka (I bought her album last nite) appears in that concert video to have a real love for her art and life. Whereas Janis always appeared to be a person who basically didn't have a lot of self confidence and used the drugs and booze as crutch to escape her personal despair. Janis was naturally a very soulful person. But I think she was on a suicidal track similar to Kurt Cobain's. I've heard some live concert recordings of her over the years and some of her desperate cries for love, attention, and acceptance bring tears to my eyes. I probably missed that when I saw her live cause of the drugs I used at the time. Don't know if I clarified my position or not...trying to type all this while on a 15 min. morning break. But according to throwingmusic.com, there will be a new Throwing Muses CD, with Tanya Donnelly on some backing vocals, in January 2003. Also, Works in Progress 3, the next installment of the MP3 subscription program, is now starting on the site. On another note, I came across a wonderful CD by browsing through CD Baby: Linda Draper's Snow White Trash Girl. Very quirky and original. The arrangements are sparse--pretty much just her and a guitar--but she has a very clear, versatile voice. She reminds me a little bit of Jane Siberry, though I'm not entirely sure why. There are samples on cdbaby.com, including my favorite song on the album, "Dear Anonymous." The title track is also worth listening to, and actually there's not a song on the album I don't like. She also has an earlier album called Ricochet that I plan to order on my next CD Baby spending spree. - -Emily ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Mar 2002 19:33:09 -0500 From: "Suzanne DeCory" Subject: Re: Loreena McKennett on Phila TV March 19th Anyone thinking about taping it? The full band was there, and it was a nice set. However, I didn't think the sound system did very nice things with Sloan's voice. Her voice reminds me of one of those organ pipes with the rich overtones, and somehow the mix flattened it out (and made it less prominent than it should have been). I haven't had time to listen to the album yet, but I've got it. I've attached the tour schedule below--New York, Connecticut, Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, Vermont. - - And - No ectophiles that I knew were in attendance, but I did run into Susan McKeown, who was sitting with Chris Cunningham and Michelle Kinney. Susan expressed amazement that I'd ordered her CD off her site before they'd sent out any publicity, and told me it had been sent out. (I got it today--one day from order to receipt. Amazing!) I asked her when she was having a CD release party; she said that they hadn't originally planned anything but that she'd just arranged for two shows that we should be hearing about soon. I was hoping that Susan and Sloan might do another duet like the memorable one at ectofest, but no such luck. Sitting over in the corner during the show I saw someone who from that distance looked a lot like Linford Detweiler. I planned on going over after the show to get a better look, but alas, before Sloan was finished Chris Cunningham took off with the guy. Which makes me wonder even more. OtR wasn't supposed to be in Philadelphia until tonight, so they may well have been in NYC last night. But maybe I just had Linford on the brain from the OtR show the night before... I purchased her debut CD, "...Baby One More Time" and her current CD, Britney, but not the one in between, "Oops! I Did It Again". I basically bought the debut because of radio airplay (WKTU, 103.5 MHz FM, NYC) and a strong Napster presence (a virtual addiction I had until Barbara Orbison [G-d bless her] shut me out), and because I wanted to know who wrote the songs. I was hoping Britney had a hand in writing a couple songs I liked on that album. I was disappointed but not surprised since she was only around 15 years old without the Debbie Gibson gift. I didn't get "Oops..." because I didn't 'get' it. I would hear the 'KTU singles, but they didn't move me nearly as much as the singles from the other album. Then I heard that she would be involved in writing a few songs on her new album, so I couldn't wait. I don't see videos or music award shows, so I didn't see her cobra or her barely-there costumes until well-after the passionate arguments flew. Without the "shock" of seeing her, I enjoyed many or most of the tracks on "Britney". I find it hard to believe that she is the same singer, with songs that seem to sound more oriented toward Contemporary Blues than those that came to my mind from her other albums. I enjoy WKTU. I have new favorite Dance artist (Amber) thanks to them, but I can't get Kylie Minogue out of my head because her new song is so droning. I was a little surprised when I started seeing Kylie's name on Ecto several years back, since the only thing I could remember from her was the "Do the Locomotion" cover, which didn't seem Ecto-ish (as I had come to understand Ecto-ishness). I usually need a musical pick-me-up at work after the coffee is gone and I have already played the few of my local folk and indie bands' CDs I brought with me to work. Cheers, Darlings! That is a really interesting mix of venues: the Cultural Center is the former main Public Library. Musical performances are usually held in a kind of open room with vaulted ceiling, opening off a staircase landing. Folding chairs and such, but can be a very interesting sound experience -- plus a cross between a house concert and a smallish venue. (last band I saw there was Whirligig - -- too long ago) The Metro is certainly not where I'd typically go to hear Sloan or Sons! was more of a punk / rock /whatever club. Though they have the main music room and also a smaller room off to the side.. Guess I'll have to check their schedule more closely. Fitzgeralds is a really great venue of the Irish pub / bar that allows smoking but serves no food (but free fresh popcorn) variety. I can't remember if this was in the post of OTR dates, but the day after Sloan's gig there - April 27 - OTR is playing.
