And I'm sure it worked. Actually I LOVE the NIKKA COSTA's latest album. I'm not sure what song your are referring to, as I don't have cable and only catch videos when I'm over at a friends house, but the album EVERYBODY GOT THEIR SOMETHING is a great soulful funky album. I would compare her music to LENNY KRAVITZ, (early) PRINCE, JANIS JOPLIN, MACY GRAY, and JAMES BROWN. She does have a deep throaty voice like JOAN OSBORNE but I wouldn't compare JOAN's music to NIKKA, though they share a certain love of blues and funk I think. I MOST certainly would NEVER compare her to JLo. Perhaps the way she is being marketed and the clothing she wears, but since I have never seen a video of hers, I am not in a position to make that type of comparison. Definitely her music is NOTHING like JLo. The sort of pre-produced dance music, and processed thin head voice that JLo uses is nothing like the throaty funk filled songs that NIKKA writes and sings. Her live shows are suppose to be amazing, full of energy and soul. Haven't had a chance to see her, but that's what I've been told, and after listening to her album, I can visualize it. And yes, I have both JLo albums so i know what I am talking about. NIKKA history is pretty amazing. this is her latest incarnation. She's started out as a child singer (her father DON COSTA was producer, and worked with the DINAH WASHINGTON, PAUL ANKA, and most FRANK SINATRA - who is also NIKKA's godfather). She did some television commercials at the age of 3 and then did a duet at the age of 5 with DON HO. At the age of 8 she got signed and released an album that shot to number one in europe, south america, and israel. She ended up opening up for THE POLICE at the age of 9 in CHILE for 300,000 people. After her father died shortly before her second album, she retired at the age of 11. A failed second comeback in the last 80's where she did the whole dance DEBBIE GIBSON/TIFFANY sound (she sang but didn't write any of the songs) didn9t take, and she moved to australia where she played in rock and funk bands until she released and recorded BUTTERFLY ROCKET, the predecessor to EVERYBODY GOT THEIR SOMETHING and her newfound sound. She won an ARIA award (AUSTRALIAN RECORDING ARTIST AWARD) as best new artist, and then three years later released EVERYBODY GOT THERE SOMETHING worldwide. Anyway the album is pretty darn great. Soulful and funky. Catchy and moody. I really hope that people aren't too tainted by a bad video, or a poor marketing choices in that respect. I think she has the potential to become the next female LENNY KRAVITZ or JAMIROQUAI. On the other hand if people don't care for either artist, then you probably would have no interest in NIKKA either. Though I will say that pretty much EVERY single person I have played her music to, has immediately run out and gotten her album, so either she's that great, or I surround myself with friends who have the exact same taste in music as I do. :) heh. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 13:15:35 -0600 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Rachel Smith On Mon, Mar 04, 2002 at 06:59:35AM -0800, Neile Graham wrote: > At 9:37 AM -0500 3/4/02, Paul Blair wrote: > >Neile wrote: > > > >>Rachel Smith is my newest obsession, and I just discovered her by > >>chance while browsing CDBaby. > > > >I'm just waiting for the post with a link to the article saying that > >her real name is Karen Weinstein... > > No no, her real last name is Sage. And I'm sure it worked. I haven't seen the videos, but I saw the picture that ran in the paper, and the stills on the web site. And Nikka is clearly being marketed as another teen sex kitten. In fact, I was turned off enough by the pictures and puff piece in the daily paper that I almost didn't do any further investigating. But she was playing at a good club presented by a reliable promoter, so I was still curious. > Actually I LOVE the NIKKA COSTA's latest album. Irvin's description seems dead on to me. I do think her voice sounds like Joan Osborne's, but not her singing style. My JLo comparison was pretty flip, and Lenny Kravitz is far more appropriate for both sound and outfits. I have an almost violent dislike of Lenny Kravitz, and while I can hear his retro-guitar sound in what Nikka is doing, it doesn't really bother me. > Her live shows are > suppose to be amazing, full of energy and soul. Haven't had a chance to see > her, but that's what I've been told, and after listening to her album, I can > visualize it. It was an excellent live show. She's backed by an 8 piece band which included two female back-up singers, horns/winds, and lots of percussion and guitars. She also played electric guitar, accoustic guitar and keyboard, though she generally relied on the band to do anything interesting musically, freeing her up to flail around, sing, growl and shriek. I haven't heard the album yet (though I did buy it... Not sure how much I'd listen to it, but I taped the show and part of my belief is I should then buy an album), but the show was really varied. It opened up in a strong James Brown mode, with lots of horns and the band on a tight groove. Lot's of 8 times, 4 times, 23 times (bam, bam, bam, bam, well, you get the idea). They dropped a few Led Zeppelin riffs into extended solos, they occasionally got really funky in more of a hip hop sense, with scratched rhythms and beat box vocals. There was a surprisingly strange interlude in the middle that started as a flute/tabla duo, with more and more percussion being layered on before Nikka came out and sang mostly wordless chants. I thought she had a really expressive, powerful voice. Sometimes the band mix got kind of muddy, and occasionally the solos a bit excessive, but usually the kept a solid groove going and her singing was really strong. If anyone wants to see/hear what she is like live, there is a good 40 minute concert video available on her web site. I streamed it at 56K and it sounded fine, though looked like a slow series of still photos. Start at http://www.nikkacosta.com if you are interested. I just glanced at the page from my high speed work connection, and you get entirely different pages depending on whether you pick high or low speed. High speed is a long animation and I think a video game, and a lot more graphics. Pretty bizarre. > Anyway the album is pretty darn great. Soulful and funky. Catchy and moody. > I really hope that people aren't too tainted by a bad video, or a poor > marketing choices in that respect. FWIW, Nikka was almost entirely clothed in this show. She has long wild hair that often obscures her face, and she was wearing a big flowery shirt (that looked a bit like a tablecloth my parents had about 20 years ago). She was no sex kitten live. In fact, I wonder how much touching (or just make-up and lighting) they use in all those press and album photos, cause she really didn't look much like them. She does have a firm body, and those teenage boys will see plenty of it if they buy the album. It looks like only about 10 to 15% of her body is covered in most of those photos. > I think she has the potential to become > the next female LENNY KRAVITZ or JAMIROQUAI. We on the indiegrrl list are kind of peeved about this (well, a lot of people are anyway) and I know that Rachael mentioned that she was going to write a letter to the editor and someone else did too. As an indie musician who has spent about 7k so far (2 of that courtesy of the Jim Beam Co. w/ the grant I won) and has about 3-5k left to spend until my album is done, I was extremely offended by the article... Here's one section I loved (<-sarcasm): "Mostly, self-produced musicians are forced to redefine success. They make do with smaller audiences and record sales in the hundreds rather than the hundreds of thousands." Make do with? WTF? I work hard, I do the best that I can do, and I like what I do... selling thousands of albums wouldn't make me more of a success to myself than I am now. I play music because I love it and I want to do it, not so I can sell thousands of records or play to huge crowds. The fact that I sell records I put out is a perk, and I enjoy playing to smaller crowds... Anyway, I think this guy clearly had an agenda and he makes indies look foolish, as if we are just throwing away our money on albums that never sell, never touch anyone, or that they are "unsuccessful" because they haven't sold thousands of copies. OK, a little righteous indignation is always fun, but I think you're blowing this article out of proportion. It's mostly about the money being spent, so of course that's its major currency of success. That *has* conventionally been the music business' main metric for success, and exactly as the article says, "Mostly, self-produced musicians are forced to redefine success." Jess, you're saying so yourself, as did Rachael. But so what? This is hardly the first article ever written about people who inexplicably spend their own money doing things they love, and there will be many more. I think we should be in *favor* of these articles. At least they show a tiny bit of awareness that there are people out there making records just because they want to. I hope some people read it and think "For ten thousand dollars I could rent a professional recording studio and make an album? Fuck, I'd rather have an album than a Passat!" Meredith: > I'm kinda wishing Rachael hadn't been mentioned, because the article > makes it sound like she's a no-talent clod herself. And reverse snobbery is unlikely to be the solution. You completely misunderstood me. I wasn't making any sort of value judgements of my own about the other artists mentioned in the article -- I've never heard their music. I was referring directly to the article itself, which did. "'It seems like everyone is doing it,' said Steve Rosenthal, the owner of the Magic Shop, a SoHo studio. 'The threshold of talent for making a CD is very low.'" ... "For others, who more daringly walk the line between hope and delusion, self-financed CD's are lottery tickets the one thing that might deliver them pop-star status." ... "Will Schillinger, the owner of Pilot Recording Studios in Chelsea, said that while it was 'sheer torture' to listen to some would-be artists, 'the ones who come in and spend thousands on mediocre music, my feeling is, if they have the money to burn, more power to them.'" The entire article comes across as having been written with an agenda to belittle independent musicians and their music. That's all I was saying. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2002 19:37:49 -0800 From: irvin lin Subject: Models of surviving as a recording artist. MOBY gets a lot of his revenue from licensing his music out. Thus the fact that his music was in movies, and commercials and televisions shows for all of 2000 and 2001. He probably doesn't ever have to sell another CD from all the royalties. Actually a lot of artists survive by licensing out their recordings. NORMAN COOK (FATBOY SLIM) is another example. Licensing the music out for soundtrack work, or for television shows or commercials is EXTREMELY lucrative, and most advertising agencies are always on the look out for new artists that are relatively unknown. And it works both ways. Once the song is featured on commercials or television, people tend to seek out the music (how many times has someone asked on this list "does anyone know who sings on that VW commercial...") and thus the artist gets more recognition. If anyone knows how to get ahold of JOSS WHEDON, perhaps he could commission HAPPY to do the theme song for his new show FIREFLY...talk about great exposure... Going back to MOBY, PLAY didn9t get much airplay when it was first released, but because the songs were licensed out to various commercials and television shows, people slowly grew aware of who he was. PLAY is a huge hit now, but it took over a year for the album to pick up. Which is pretty amazing, when it seems that most labels will drop promoting an album if it doesn't hit within a three months period. There are actually a lot of examples of popular successful artists that don't tour. Not everyone has the tireless energy and touring stamina as ANI DIFRANCO or TORI AMOS. LIZ PHAIR who didn9t tour at all for her first album EXILE IN GUYVILLE (she did a handful of shows and then stopped because of severe stage fright). LIZ was finally able to overcome her stage fright, and now tours, but it was her first album, and the word of mouth from her GIRLYSOUND demos that made it so successful. Another artists would XTC who never play out but has quite a cult following. It's a well known fact that ANDY PATRIDGE also suffers from stage fright and won't play out. This fact has actually been used in marketing them (when NONSUCH came out, the copy on some of the ads read "new album, still no tour"). And finally there is KATE BUSH, who hasn't played out since '79 was it? And when she did play, she only played what, three or four shows? Each of these artists were able to develop a large following through other means than just playing out. Just wanted to add my lovely 2" in. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2002 22:51:34 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Models of surviving as a recording artist. I have no idea if he's going to be there, but if he is I could always slip him a CD. ;> (Yeah, right. But it's fun to think about.) ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Mar 2002 21:43:56 -0700 From: Neal Copperman Subject: web page picture resolutions? Here's a completely non-ecto question: I want to grab some pictures off the web to send to a local publication. They tell me they have to be 300 dpi or greater. As I understand, usually 72 (or is 75?) dpi. - -- | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems | | http://www.metatronpress.com/nj/smwb.html | | Latest CDs: Collaborations/ All Souls http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Mar 2002 00:14:36 -0500 From: "glenn mcdonald" Subject: RE: web page picture resolutions? Any image can be 300 dpi if you print it small enough. Of course, if you want it to be printed at N inches wide, it will need to be at least N*300 pixels wide. Most web graphics will thus be good for only an inch or two wide, which I'm guessing is not what you need. Time to buy a digital camera! glenn ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2002 23:26:22 -0600 From: James Mitchell Subject: Re: web page picture resolutions? They have a number of dots across, and a number of dots down. The size of the displayed image is then a function of the dpi of the device displaying it. Your screen will usually run (as Joseph Zitt points out) around either 72-75 dpi or 110-120 dpi, depending on resolution and the physical size of the monitor. Print starts at 300 dpi and goes up from there. As a result, a picture that takes up a quarter of the screen on your computer may only be an inch by and inch and a third in print. So, what you need to do is find out how many inches a side you are going to print, and multiply those by the number of dots per inch of your medium, and then look for a picture at a minimum of that size. If the picture in print needs to be 3"x5", then the digital original will need to be at least 900 pixels wide and 1500 pixels long. There are ways to cheat. Quality image editors like Photoshop (and The Gimp) offer the option to enlarge a picture by interpolation. This estimates what the intermediate pixels that aren't there should be. Unlike the cheap resizing techniques of simple programs, it dosen't look to bad. You might even get away with printing it, if you absolutely had to, if the original is good quality (without too many artifacts from jpeg compression), as long as you don't stretch it too far (you might get away with doubling the dimensions, but I shouldn't). You really should try to find an original that is large enough though, instead. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Mar 2002 22:22:00 -0800 From: Jessica Koeppel Subject: Housewarming Party!
