I just got done seeing Svirka, our local Balkan women's choir. (Yes, oddly enough, Albuquerque NM has a local Balkan women's choir, and they are really good too.) Even odder was that there was a contingent of 29 Croatians who were bussed in from somwhere for the show. The really strange thing was the leader of the Croatian contingent had been told that it was to be an evening of Croatian music. But reading the program, they saw that it was Balkan music in general, and they weren't going to have anything to do with that. They might be exposed to some Serbian music, or some other group that totally offended them, and they weren't going to stay for that. So they all got a refund, got back in their bus and took off to somewhere else. I can't imagine that had any better luck finding Croatian music in Albuquerque though. Not that we cared. The show sold out without them. And, oddly enough, Svirka opened with a Croatian welcome song, followed by another Croatian tune. And there wasn't any Serbian music the whole night, though there was a lot of Macedonian music, and maybe the Croat's hate those guys too. Anyway, I was there with a friend who is really into this kind of stuff. The band mentioned they were playing a song they learned from Kali Yag. My friend said she'd been trying to order the Kali Yag CD's and not having any luck. I think they might be a Hungarian group, but I'm really not sure. Anyone out there have any clue where I might be able to get ahold of this? Or anyone in the right part of the world who might be able to buy me a copy for trade? neal np: kristin sweetland - kristin sweetland (One of the 60 or so discs I picked up at Folk Alliance. Kristin is part of the littleredhen collective, who were hands down the highlight of the week for me. Check out http://www.littleredhenmusic.com for who is in the collective and dates. I'm thrilled that my favorite solo member, Myshkin, is coming to NM in a few weeks. Some others seem to be playing around NYC. The Be Good Tanyas have been getting a buzz around here, and they are part of the collective too. Lot's of exciting performers who I think would be very ecto-friendly. We left them a ton of cards and told them any subset of little red hens would be welcome at our house concerts.) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Mar 2002 03:10:45 -0600 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Kali Yag? (nor would Ms. Rhodes be the only artist given some direct practical help by this list or members thereof...!) but, less she change the circumstances of my backside, i'm not going to jump in and pretend to be helping her as a person... ...but i am not sure all that has much to do with promoting Happy's music. i don't play "Warpaint" for people to promote Ms. Rhodes career, i play it because i love the music and i want to share it. it's a happy coincidence, as it were, if that leads to more money or more albums or more fame. the system is too chaotic, too wonderfully and infuriatingly fickle to guarantee that cause/effect. this list is, and i hope ever will be, about promoting the music that's out there now, recorded or live, famous or otherwise, because we like the music and we like each other and it seems like a awfully good idea to share it. so by all means start grassroots campaigns, write letters, whip up web sites, cause a ruckus (damn it, it's rock and roll after all!), but do it to spread the music, and let careers and people follow or not as they see fit. - -g n.p. snoring cat on top my monitor n.r. This is the singer of whom Miles Davis is supposed to have said, "Blossom's the only white woman who ever had soul." That was long ago, however; before I went, I had to wonder: Does she still have it? The Skylight Room is fairly small, say about twice the size of Ciel Rouge, where Mila Drumke used to do her Valentine's Day show. Tables and chairs are crammed in so closely that you can barely get to them. Blossom came out wearing a white button-down sweater and pants and looking pretty grandmotherly. She does a fine job with the piano; her voice shows her age but that doesn't make the show any less entertaining. She is accompanied by drums and electric bass. The set included everything from Cole Porter to Sondheim to Sting, with a large proportion of funny songs. At the beginning she would go right from one song into the next, adding only "The next song is called..." and sometimes "and it was written by..." As she warmed up she got more talkative about the songs. Here's what she sang: Ooh-la-la Rhode Island ("Pencils/Come from Pennsylvania...Tents from Tentessee...") I Walk a Little Faster (actually a slow ballad) I'm Hip ("When it was hip to be hep I was hep...") If I Were a Bell (not "If I Had a Bell") Always True to You Darling, In my Fashion It's Alright to Be Afraid My Attorney Bernie ("Bernie says we sue, we sue/Bernie says we sign...we sign") Intermission Bruce ("Don't ever wear puce, Bruce...You have to reduce, Bruce... Wear something loose, Bruce...") La Belle Dame Sans Regrets (by Sting) Surrey with the Fringe on Top The Ladies Who Lunch Liz, Ralph and Calvin Bluesette I've Taken a Fancy to You Peel Me a Grape ("When I say do it/jump to it...") I don't know that I saw plenty of evidence of "soul," but then I may not be attuned to that. However, it was an enjoyable time. There were plenty of CDs for sale, from all phases of her career, and she is available after the show to sign them. I've been playing and playing and playing her disc, _the clearing_. It's experimental pop, sweet and a touch edgy and full of interesting, allusive lyrics, strange little hooks and tunes and ways of putting songs together. I'm especially in utter love with the most Jane Siberry-like song, the album closer "the waves" and the tango, "juanita" but the whole disc is a delight and I could list things I especially love about each song here. She has an interesting voice (her press describes it as "tequila poured over honey") and she knows how to use it. Lots of interesting piano and guitar and harmonies, too. I can't get enough of it. What really bothers me about it is not the display but how consciously she and her promoters decided to do it, knowing it would help sell records. And I'm sure it worked. Well, I'd rather talk about music I like. For those of you who have been hearing me rave about Gabriel Yacoub and never felt like paying import prices for his discs, he now has a new one just released by Prime CD (a label which should seem pretty familiar around her). It leans toward his folkie rather than electronic side and is really lovely--it's a 2001 re-recording of songs that will sound familiar to the lucky few who have been following his work over the years. It does have his version of the Richard Shindell's "You Stay Here". He does several songs in English and a few still in French. - --Neile - -- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ............ http://www.ectoguide.org ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #63 *************************
