Considering the source and content of that suggestion, I would like to explain what I've referred to as my pragmatist's view. I just want to defend myself by saying that Happy's music has given me great joy. Although I listen to a very broad range of music (checked out a live performance of the improv-jazz trio Ethnic Music Ensemble last night here outside of Wash., DC), Happy never fails to move me entirely when I spin her discs. Tears practically well up each time I hear her. If she was never to release another new recording or I never get to hear her perform live again, I will be depressed. But she has already given us so much (her album output is actually quite impressive) that it would be hard to complain. I did not intend to squelch positive attempts to help Happy out. Maybe I had a distorted perception of where Happy wants to go. I was just suggesting that anyone serious in their desire to help her out should check with her on what might be a good plan. > 2. I think it's unfortunate that you think any outcome > of a discussion on grassroots PR (which doesn't just > mean performance - it means playlists and Web site > promotion and writing articles and general awareness > raising) would ultimately be nothing more than > "ill-fated talk". It would be ill-fated talk if a number of people came up with an idea and Happy didn't approve of it. That is *all* I meant. Happy knows the music business better than most of us (I should think). > 3. I'm disappointed that there's no-one here, not a > SINGLE PERSON who has anything positive to say, or > helpful information on past and current efforts. > Disappointed and *surprised*. I would venture to guess that what people think or don't think, do or don't do, value or don't value, doesn't correlate 100% with what everyone wants or has time to post to this list. I have posted some "positive" comments above, but I didn't think they were particularly poignant or effective. If I wasn't so self-conscious about it, I'd be much more inclined to send these comments directly to Happy, often, but not necessarily to this list. > I'll assume > nothing like that is happening at the grassroots level > and that no-one here is interested in participating in > a grassroots campaign given the nature (and general > lack) of responses... This is my final comment. I would like to hear/read what Happy really wants. Would she like for a bunch of us to help her put together a tour? I have heard that Happy wants to do some shows soon, but I don't know to what extent. Does she think that word-of-mouth efforts to get more people to buy her discs would help? I would love to help her do a return engagement down in the D.C. area. I'd be more than willing to do flyers, send emails, etc. But I can't do that without her approval. OK. I better get to my office work. Amy Martin, Missoula, Montana's favorite singer-songwriter, has just embarked on a Northwest tour. Go check her out if you are in any of these places (Seattle, Bellingham, Olympia, Portland, Eugene, Lewiston, Dexter) in the next week or two. She will be accompanied on this tour by guitarist Mason Tuttle, a rare opportunity to see these two play together outside Missoula. For more info see http://www.amy-martin.com or http://www.musi-cal.com Quotes from the Press "With her first CD, the rich and beautiful To You, Martin proved herself to be the West's answer to East Coast pop-folkie Dar Williams. She sings intelligent story songs, some personal, some political." - -- Spokesman Review (Spokane, Washington) "To You exhibits a pervasive and intuitive intelligence. Everything works together to make this one of the best albums I've heard all year I was blown away by the lyrics Her style is as bluesy and bold as it is melodic and ear-pleasing, and her vocals are as pure and steady as a young Joni Mitchell Martin's songs reveal more with each listen." - -- Pacific Northwest Inlander (Spokane, Washington) "With a voice as gentle and searing as Lucinda Williams and lyrics as detailed as Dar Williams, Amy Martin glides though her second album, Unbroken, with grace and diversity . With all the music inside Amy Martin, how can she keep from singing?" -- Missoulian Entertainer (Missoula, Montana) "Missoula, Montana's Amy Martin is a free spirit who, after only two years of professional performance, has already reached a level of versatility and maturity in her music usually reserved for far more seasoned players." - - Pulse of the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN) Friday March 1st 8pm Zoka Coffee Roastery free 2200 N. 56th St Seattle, WA 206-545-4277 Saturday, March 2nd 8pm free Stuart's Coffeehouse 1302 Bay Street, Bellingham, WA 98225 360-752-2024 Sunday, March 3rd 7pm $5 Terra Organica 929-A North State St Bellingham, WA 360-715-8020 Wednesday March 6th noon Evergreen State College, CAB Deli Olympia, WA Wednesday, March 6th, 9pm The Buzz Coffeehouse University or Oregon, Eugene, OR Eugene, OR 541-346-3725 thebuzz@darkwing.uoregon.edu Thursday, March 7th 1:30pm Lost Valley Educational Center Dexter, OR Chris at 541-937-3351 chris@talkingleaves.org 81868 Lost Valley Lane www.lostvalley.org Friday March 8th 7pm Touchstone Coffeehouse Portland OR 7631 NE Glisan 503-262-7613 Sat March 9th 8pm Blackbird Java 326 Main Street Lewiston, ID 83501 208-743-1355 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Mar 2002 06:25:24 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Happy's Career Good Evening, Ectophiles, I have been thinking for several days now about the Happy's career thread. I was remiss in not responding sooner so that Sarah Smith didnt think she was talking into a vacuum. Ms. Rhodes doesn't seem too shy about asking for help on a grassroots level. Below you will see an email Happy posted on June 4, 2001. I suspect many of us sent Happy the names of radio stations. I don't think she would have much trouble getting on a talk show at our local public radio station, even though they haven't played her music for something like ten years (the station went to an all-talk format). I think she is still fondly remembered at the station. The way I read Happy's emails here and her musings on Auntiesocial, she has been waiting for an album to be able to use as leverage to get her back into the public eye. It is probably tough trying to interest people in an album that is two or three years old. And that is the fault of a fickle public, not a fault in the artist. Audiences want fresh meat, not old albums (Well, maybe not Grateful Dead audiences). And Happy seemed to be revving up to get the new album out and promote it. Then the hand injury got in the way. But as Happy said in the last Many Worlds, she was recently thinking of performing in NYC. Seems like the intent is there and will bear fruit sometime in the future. I also think we didn't rush headlong into a discussion of assisting Happy because we don't know what she wants in the way of success. Any presumptions we make about improving her lot in life by working at a grassroots level will probably appear to be bossiness on our part. I get the impression that Ms. Rhodes is very strong-willed and will ask for our help when she's good and ready. This is probably a good time to quote her email. Happy's words: <> <> Do note that the above email is from nearly a year ago. So the plan for an NYC show is yesterday's news. But Happy might still want to hear about local radio stations. I think if Happy wants to tour in support of her new album, any number of ectophiles will step forward to offer her a living room to perform in. If that is too far a step down the career ladder for her, I know of a place in Dallas, Uncle Calvin's, that is a coffee house and regularly draws two or three hundred people for concerts. I can't imagine Uncle Calvin's not being interested in Happy, and I can't help but think there are similar coffee houses in many/most of the major cities in the US and Canada. Happy has many options. But until she decides how to approach the support for her new album, there isn't much that we can do. Or she may be waiting for the right moment to get support from us. Michael Pearce pointed out that Harry Nilsson didn't have to work extraordinarily hard for a career in music. Michael didn't come right out and state it, but he was implying there are many models for success in the music industry. I immediately thought of Jimmy Webb (I am reading a songwriting book by him). Webb probably made enough on royalties from 1968 to 1973 to never work again. He toured a little, mostly to get people to associate his songs with him, but I think from the 70's on he wrote songs and raised a family (with a broadway show or two thrown in for good measure). That's one model. Moby and other techno/dance artists may play a handful of dates during a year, with some djing gigs thrown in, but they make their money from cds, producing, and re-mixing (I think it is Armand Van Helden who gets $50,000 a remix.). That is another model. There are songwriters in Nashville who no one but insiders knows exist, but the songwriters have the mansion and the handsome salary from royalties. Some artists play at any function (weddings, open mic nights, the street corner, restaurant gigs) to be heard and are scrambling as hard as they can to pay the bills. And there are many more models for a music career. Without knowing what music career model Happy has in her head, it is difficult to tell what kind of support she wants or needs. I've babbled on long enough. This email is an example of why the topic of Happy's career was not an especially hot item. Anything we write will sound ill-informed or bossy because we don't live Ms. Rhodes' life nor do we know what she wants (other than a decent salary and health insurance). When she is ready to promote her new album, I bet she will entertain suggestions on how best to get her name out to the public. Yours eternally (or maybe for another 25 years or so, depending on genetics), Lyle P.S. I still think cloning Happy is the solution to a multitude of problems. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2002 01:35:44 -0600 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Happy's Career On Sat, Mar 02, 2002 at 06:25:24AM +0000, Lyle Howard wrote: > P.S.
