The Balligomingo team www.balligomingo.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 08:28:01 -0800 (PST) From: Sarah Anne Smith Subject: Happy's career Hey all, I've just been reading through the Many Worlds archives at Auntie Social... Reading her trials and tribulations careerwise made me want to help - I never really thought about it before, but why *hasn't* she been picked up by a label that recognizes her as a musician/composer/engineer of exceptional talent, on par with Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel et al? What the hell? She's got talent, genius - and while I agree with her that lookism is a regrettable fact (of many professional worlds), she IS incredibly, stunningly beautiful and would be an asset to any image-conscious label. I mean, in all honesty, she has everything it would take on every level to be just as successful professionally/financially as Tori Amos or Kate Bush. So what's up? Anyway, I'm a freelance copywriter with experience in advertising and public relations, so I started thinking of ways I might be able to help. Ask to write articles and press releases and such. Work to get her invited to play at some of those vast enormous scifi conventions, maybe (I know a band called the Changelings that make a *bucket* of money every time they play DragonCon and got a real boost in terms of exposure that way). Maybe a letter-writing and PR campaign to get her on Fresh Air w/Terry Gross? Then I thought I should ask here, because I'm sure the ectophiles have tried things like this in the past. Can someone get me caught up on grassroots PR campaigns of the past, or tell me who's already working on it so I can help? There's no reason this woman shouldn't be able to afford health insurance! Or a wonderful loft with a recording studio in it! cheers, Sarah ===== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Science does not know its debt to imagination." - -Ralph Waldo Emerson Yahoo! Sports - Coverage of the 2002 Olympic Games http://sports.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 16:24:26 -0500 From: meredith Subject: susan mckeown: prophecy Hi, Fate has brought me a copy of Susan McKeown's new CD, _Prophecy_. As SteveV noted recently, it's a limited-edition affair (in fact, it's a CD-R). Which is an absolute crime, because it's going to be really hard to top it for CD of the year. Yes, folks, it's *that* good. Instant desert island disc, just add water. It's always strange to be able to sing along to every word of almost every song on a brand-new disc on the very first listen -- but Susan has been performing these songs live with The Chanting House for so long (almost 7 years, in a couple of cases), they're already part of my musical being. It's taken *way* too long for them to get recorded. Fortunately, the arrangements are different enough from the live versions that there is still plenty new to discover. The title track is the only completely new composition, something that came straight out of the studio. It is very reminiscent of the song "Bones", and something that refuses to leave my brain. This is a CD that is impossible to listen to only once. As we were listening to it the other day, woj wondered if it's possible to have too many tour-de-force songs on one album -- this one certainly pushes the envelope ("The River"! "Wheels Of The World"! "Ballinaboula"! "South"!), but that's by no means a bad thing. I don't envy the DJs at the radio stations that eventually get this, for having to try to pick what to play. I've long felt that "The River" is the song that should vault Susan to international stardom, but "South" is starting to give it a run for its money. I have no idea when this CD will be available to the general public, though I gather a few will be made available via susanmckeown.com soon. When that happens, ectophiles should line up to grab them as soon as they can -- this is an indispensable disc, both for people who are already fans of Susan's work and those who love lush, gorgeous, kickass music led by one of the best voices out there today. I hope she finds a label to distribute it that can adequately get the word out -- this album deserves to make Susan McKeown a household name. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 16:35:15 -0500 From: meredith Subject: REMINDER: Colleen Sexton at the House O'Muzak Next Sunday Hi, I hope you're all rousing yourselves from your Olympic-induced stupor. The date is approaching ... just dropping in a reminder that our next house concert is coming up next Sunday! COLLEEN SEXTON Sunday, March 3 at 4 pm After Trina Hamlin was here last month, I got an email from a friend of hers offering to stop by and play sometime. I've heard so much good stuff about Colleen Sexton, of course I jumped at the chance. Martin's little sister has been making quite a name for herself lately. She was part of the _Respond_ compilation of Boston area folk musicians, has been nominated for a Boston Music Award, and recently put out a great CD simply called _Colleen Sexton Live_, which was itself recorded at a house concert. The reviews (rightly) rave about her strong, rich voice and jazzy, bluesy arrangements. She's guaranteed to put on one of the best shows we've had here. "Colleen Sexton is one of the top young talents of the coffeehouse circuit, with a supple voice and a pop/r&b bent reminiscent of brother Martin." -- Daniel Gewertz, Boston Herald "Colleen Sexton is one of the region's shining stars." -- Stu Fox, Ithaca Times "With a touch of jazz and a lot of the blues, Sexton's supple alto soars with passion and energy." -- R.B. Schwartz, Music Matters Review For more info on Colleen, including sound samples see http://www.colleensexton.com. As usual, the suggested donation is $10. We'll have munchies to much on, drinks to drink, and a good time will be had by all. To reserve your spot(s), please e-mail meth@smoe.org, or call (203) 776-9325. Hope to see a bunch of you here! Colleen deserves a full house at her first show in New Haven, so get your reservations in now... ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 16:37:41 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Re: susan mckeown: prophecy At 04:24 PM 2/23/02 -0500, meredith wrote: >I have no idea when this CD will be available to the general public, though >I gather a few will be made available via susanmckeown.com soon. When I talked to Susan on Thursday evening (after a wonderful performance of Peter & Wendy), she told me that the CDs should be available online on March 1st. I gather that'll be it for US distribution for the time being that, as she also mentioned they're going to concentrate on pushing the album in Ireland first. As for Peter & Wendy... wow. Truly a stunning, magical piece of work. I'm quite glad that I have tickets for tommorow as well, since that'll be the final performance of this run. Hi, Chuck Jones, the legendary animator who gave the world Bugs Bunny, the Road Runner and Daffy Duck, among so many others passed away yesterday, at the age of 89. Happy is a huge Looney Tunes fan (as am I), so this is relevant news. The world has truly lost a legend. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Feb 2002 15:48:08 -0800 From: Steve VanDevender Subject: someone out there has a Windows worm This is slightly off-topic, even by Ecto standards, but it looks like an Ecto subscriber has a particularly annoying Windows worm that is forging addresses that include those of some other Ecto subscribers.
