"Ballad of the Sad Young Men," a standard of which my favorite rendition is by Eden Atwood on the original edition of her _Today_ album on Southport. (This album was later reissued on Concord Jazz, under a different title which I don't remember, with some tracks missing.) Rickie Lee Jones also covered it on, I think, the _Pop Pop_ album. "The People That You Never Get To Love" by Rupert Holmes, from the _Partners in Crime_ album. It's not recorded yet, but Susan Werner has a great "romantic song cycle" of jazzy, standard-like piano-based songs with nary a sunshine lollipop or rainbow in sight. There are some great metaphors, though, such as "you're a tall drink of water on a long hot day", and in a great song called "Philanthropy", about wanting to share the wealth of love her lover makes her feel. And of course, she's great with the breakup songs, too. :) ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 23:05:18 EST From: MPressinfo@aol.com Subject: **Rachael Sage @ Millenium Friday!** "Sexy, self-possessed and impressive. One of my favorite local djs (LUther Watts on KBAC in Santa Fe) played her song It Could Have Been Me , and I found it very disturbing--it's about a serial killer of hitchhikers and it was sort of reminescent in tone of Jewel's Nicotine Love (for those of you lucky enough to have heard that old time never to see the light of day number). Anyway, the album is pretty varied--from stripped down acoustic folk to bluesy, somewhat overproduced bluesy rock ala Bonnie Raitt or the like, but a lot of it is extremely likeable and Shannon's got a great way with both words and phrasing for someone so young. Definitely an artist to watch. Jeff Hanson n.p. Shannon McNally - Jukebox Sparrows n.r. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that I find the theme to Gilligans Island is a subject of discussion on Ecto the very evening before I planned to play the middle-eastern version of it (I play in a backup band for belly dancers) out in public. Gilligan's Island on bouzouki and dumbek... I'm curious to see if anyone in the audience notices (this will be the instrumental version). ~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~ Chris Stack www.stackdigital.com chris@stackdigital.com ~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~ Send an email to my cell phone - Make it short - 70 characters or less... cellphone@stackdigital.com ~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~ One should listen to music, read a poem or see a fine picture every day of one's life in order that worldly cares do not obliterate the sense of the beautiful implanted in the human soul. -Goethe ~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~-*-~ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 22:50:47 -0800 From: "Angel's Shadow" Subject: Delurking Hi, I usually just totally sponge all the music suggestions everyone has on here and kind of feel like I'm part of the conversations I never usually join. I just wanted to take a moment to ask any of you to check out my songs on mp3.com ( www.mp3.com/kristen_scallion ). I go for kind of ambient, dreamy and fantasy sounds based on my love of the same type of music and sci-fi/fantasy movies and their musical scores. My lyrics aren't sci-fi/fantasy currently, but eventually, I'd like to start writing stories and working up to music novels hopefully accompanied by written stories. I'm still learning how to write and develop music though, and praying that I'll have the nerve to share it with people. Ok...thanks. By the way, I haven't seen it mentioned here, but I could have easily missed it: Balligomingo's release is slated for June 11, 2002 if anyone's interested. Thanks! Bye.
