Does anyone know about any concerts to go to (or other interesting things to do)? My search on the web has turned up nothing so far. Hello to all! My name is Sarah, I'm 29 and live in Bloomington, Indiana. I was just checking to see when Happy's new CD would be released at her Web site and linked to the Ecto site and thought I'd subscribe... So here I am! :-) A little about me: I'm interested in millinery (currently working on a flat-pattern buckram framed hat of my own Neo-Edwardian design), cooking (especially the citrusy, spicy foods of Cambodia and environs), cyberpunk and sci-fi, daydreaming, and just completed an application to the IU graduate department of history and philosophy of science, where I hope to concentrate on medieval magical theory and experimental science. I have a Maine Coon cat named Zoe who loves to talk (chirp and trill, mostly). And I Happy Rhodes' music has been the soundtrack for the best and lowest moments of my past ten years - always a sense of kinship and comfort that lets me be alone and accompanied at the same time when that's exactly what I need. :-) Of course, I also listen when I'm just doing dishes or working on a project. ;-) So, hi! Lamb seem to me the champs at that. Can anyone think of others where the love is about the good things in the relationship and the songs isn't "Sunshine Lollipops and rainbows"? Well, for love songs of all sorts, from the bleak to the rejoicing, I recommend Magnetic Field's brilliant, "69 Love Songs," or even the 6ths "Hyacinths and Thistles" (both masterminded by the incomparable Stephen Merritt. "The Book of Love" from the former is possibly my all-time favorite love song in a positive way. It moves me to tears everytime I hear it. And I've got a soft spot for The 6ths "Lindy Lou" featuring vocals by Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto. It's incredibly sweet, but it's got that same Stephen Merritt simplicity. Michael n.p. (please note the previous assessment was not a criticism of C'J's -- in fact, "pale sun crescent moon" is a favorite album...) another one that hits me the same way is 10,000 Maniacs' "trouble me". the cynical clouds part for a few minutes: no sunshine or rainbows, just a sudden clear view. mind you, i am a hopeless, hapless Romantic; give me gloom and rainbows in equal endless parts ;) so i have to throw in: Happy's "if love is a game, i win" and Heather Nova's "doubled up" -- don't ask me to explain. > And hi and welcome Sarah, and anyone else who is new on ecto (lurking > or otherwise). ditto and likewise and footah! - -g n.p. Whenever I visit San Francisco, I check the "COMING EVENTS" link at: I'll be in the Bay Area next week and will be attending: FEB 20 Kasey Chambers (Bimbo's, in SF) or FEB 20 Martha Davis (The MOTELS) (Icon, in Palo Alto) FEB 21 Adrianne, and Kyler England (Voodoo Lounge, in SF) FEB 22 Adrianne, Kyler England, Danya River, and Storm Florez (Rose Street House Concert, in Berkeley) FEB 23 Laurie Geltman (Espresso Garden, in San Jose) FEB 24 Laurie Geltman (Bottom of the Hill, in SF) If you don't like those choices, use the music search links at the bottom of the "COMING EVENTS" page. Or search the major clubs (Slims, Warfield, Fillmore, Bimbos, Great American Music Hall, Freight & Salvage, etc) on the "VENUES" page. If you don't like any of the music, or have lots of extra time, check other things to do on the "BAY AREA RESOURCES" page. Email me privately if you have more questions. ~Nita ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 21:33:47 -0800 From: CDavis Subject: Fantasy trilogies On the subject of fantasy novels, I wonder if anyone has read the Shadow War Chronicles, a trilogy written by George Lucas and Chris Claremont (X-Men). The titles are Shadow Moon, Shadow Dawn and Shadow Star. They start off about twelve years after the movie "Willow" ends and feature some of the characters from the movie. Willow, as the formost wizard of his age, is now called Thorn Drumheller. He must discover and stop what has started destroying the world at the ascention of Elora Danan, the baby princess that he rescued in the movie. A thoroughly engrossing and imaginative series that I heartily recommend to anyone who likes fantasy. Chuck ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Feb 2002 03:26:59 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Love songs of the broken-hearted. Hola, In keeping with my jaundiced view of love (which I hope is temporary), here is a list of my favorite songs of lost love and regret. "Walk Away Renee" the Left Banke did a good job with this one, but Jimmy Lafave rips your heart out when he sings it. "So walk away Renee, you wont see me following you back home. Now as the rain beats down upon my weary eyes, for me it cries." "Remember Me" I have no idea who sings this. I think Scott Wiseman wrote it. Its a bluegrass standard. "Remember me when the candlight is gleaming, remember me at the close of long, long day. It would be so sweet when all alone Im dreaming just to know you still remember me." "Lorena" This is a pre-Civil War pop song. I didnt realize it has more than two verses until I did a Google search on it. The extra verses pile more sentimental lyrics on top of the already maudlin first two verses. But its hard to beat these lines: "And what we might have been Lorena had but our loving prosperd well! But then, tis pastthe years are gone, Ill not call up their shadwy forms. Ill say to them: Lost years sleep on! Sleep on! Nor heed lifes pelting storm." "Something to Fall Back On" a Todd Rundgren song about a guy who is so in love hell settle for being an afterthought in some womans life. "...you didnt care if I was around/But still you kept me in the back of your head/Just like the teddy bear that you took to bed/I was only something to fall back on." The BeeGees-like chipmunk backing vocals add to the charm. Rundgren has written tons of good love songs. "Barbie and Ken" Little Jack Melody and His Young Turks. Mr. Melody (Steve Carter) can write heartbreakers with the best. "Barbie and Ken fell in love at the dance/Colour My World was their song...as time goes on they will glide in a world of their own/frozen in amber that way...Barbie and Ken slowly drifted apart/winter comes after the fall/hell never know why she had to move on/storybooks seldom tell all/as time goes on he will sing in a music box waltz/frozen in amber this way/writing it down so it never can end/this is the story of Barbie and Ken" Incidentally, I mentioned Judee Sill in a message last night. Today I was looking at Little Jacks website and, lo and behold, he has written a paragraph on Judee Sill in his musings. He also talks about a great song he has written called "A Waltz in Springfield, Missouri." Okay, lets all go cry ourselves to sleep now.
