Sad news. :/ Dave van Ronk was one of the headliners of last year's Eli Whitney Folk Festival, and as Artist Hospitality Coordinator one of my jobs was to ferry him around New Haven and make sure he had everything he needed that day. I feel honored and privileged to have had the opportunity to meet him, and to see him perform. He wasn't well at that time (in fact, the Festival may have been one of his very last performances, come to think of it), but he was very personable and funny and made the day a lot more fun for all of us. He was a big hit on stage, and made a lot of new fans too. He was a legend, for sure. For those who aren't familiar with his music, I'm sure WFUV will be playing a *lot* of it tomorrow. They're online at http://www.wfuv.org. >From: "auerworld" >To: >Cc: , , , > >Subject: Dave Van Ronk----R.I.P. >Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 19:52:43 -0500 > >Some of you might be interested in this: > >Dave Van Ronk died at 9:30 in the morning on Sunday Feb 10. >He had been suffering from colon cancer, but in the end his lungs gave >out. > >Van Ronk was one of a kind. This one hurts. I got into Dave van Ronk back in High School. It was the early sixties. In college, his album with the Hudson Dusters was formative in my musical and mental development. I had a lot of respect for the guy and will miss him a lot. *sigh* This has been a rough year so far. My mother in law passed away a month ago. Two weeks ago my wife's sister's sister in law passed away unexpectedly; she was my wife's age. Last Thursday our 9 year old Golden Retriever had to be put down. I've been hurting all year and now I hear this. Impermanence is a hallmark of existence, but does it have to happen in such concentration? As usual, Ecto is the place I heard about it first. The eclecticism and range of musical information and news remains unparalled, even if the news be sad. Rest In Peace, Dave. You leave this planet a better place for your being here.
