All I can gather is that they are now defunct, and that the Blueshift (is it EP or LP?) was never released, though there are mp3s. I could be wrong, though. I haven't had much luck in finding information on them. I have the Redshift EP. Were there any albums? Any other EPs? I would appreciate any info, and, if anyone can tell me what the members are doing now, I would also greatly appreciate it. Second, I have recently fallen in love with Bel Canto. I understand that Anneli Drecker has released a solo album, _Tundra_. What is anyone's opinion on this album? How is like Bel Canto, and how is not? Anyone like this better? Sound? I love Bel Canto songs like "Spiderdust", "A Shoulder to the Wheel", "Keena Maareme", "Mornixuur", "Rumour", "Horses", "Shimmering, Warm, and Bright", "Buthania, "Sleepwalker", "Summer"... anyone got any recommendations for other bands that are along the lines of Bel Canto? I still kick myself for not picking up her "Lipstick Conspiracies" when it surfaced at my fave Soho shop for a fiver, but I got her most recent album, "Rules for Jokers", which is definitely ecto material and well worth checking out. It didn't grab me immediately, and her voice doesn't have much range or variety, but she's got a mean way with a lyric. It was her and the excellent Jamie Lawson I was trying to see down at the Spitz a few months ago, but got lost and ended up driving around the East End (yeah, I got really lost!) before giving up and coming home, to my shame. Hmmm...must dig it out and give it another listen.... Did you see the Indigo Girls interview in the Observer, yesterday? FINALLY, they're getting some press over here!!! Sound? i have a copy donated to me by neile because i was interested in it and after hearing it, she wasn't. i have to say it's a disappointment overall, though it does have its moments - and of course it has anneli's voice, which can make up for a lot. most of it is a bit overproduced, a bit too sweet, a bit too pop. note `a bit', as in it's tolerably so, but it probably won't hit my cd player too much unless i'm in the mood for that. one of the finer moments is the song `trinitron' - the only one that's really stood out for me so far (perhaps a sign that i need to listen a bit more before spouting opinions!). it's mostly anneli singing `trinitron' and other TV-related words in the background while an american voice tells the story of her friend the closet TV addict, and then talks more about TV in general. it's been pretty funny for me as i picked up baxter's cd around the same time and really love the song `television': i wish i'd seen you in front of your tv set i wish i'd been there when you blew up what seemed the whole world to you ..both of these are songs i think my sister needs to hear. :P > I love Bel Canto songs like "Spiderdust", "A Shoulder to the Wheel", "Keena > Maareme", "Mornixuur", "Rumour", "Horses", "Shimmering, Warm, and Bright", > "Buthania, "Sleepwalker", "Summer"... anyone got any recommendations for > other bands that are along the lines of Bel Canto? i haven't found anything that fills the same niche as pre-magic box bel canto for me (and that's desert island material for me), but you can see others' opinions on the guide too: http://ectoguide.usrbin.ca/guide.cgi?artists/bel.canto - -damon ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 10:11:24 -0800 From: Greg Bossert Subject: Re: Hi folks. Two upcoming events featuring Olympia's Daughters - a very Unitarian Universalist-positive women's choir - might interest a few people on this list. First, on Thursday, February 28, the ensemble hits Drew University's Simon Forum (36 Madison Avenue, in Madison, New Jersey) for "V-Day 2002," along with the Indigo Girls, Alix Olson, and a special performance of _The Vagina Monologues_ (no details on who will be involved in the last one). Tickets can be had from 1-201-507-8900 (TDD: 1-800-943-4327) or from _that_ usual suspect online... (three guesses). Then on Friday, March 8th (7:30 p.m. Eastern), Olympia's Daughters get to share a bill with Janis Ian (!) at Montclair State University's Memorial Auditorium (Upper Montclair, New Jersey, ring 1-973-655-5112). The choir's homepage is http://www.geocities.com/olympiasdaughters/ (you'll have to get those nasty ads closed, but still)... For the record, they are a fantastic bunch of singers, and a hit with UU congregations throughout the States. I should know - our UU fellowship hosted them one year, back when they were known as Womansong (if I remember rightly), just a few months before the name change. This will be her last public gig before going back to the US and also my first (and probably also last) house concert. I'm pretty excited about it. Snacks and soft drinks will be provided, BYO alcohol. Admission will be by donation, $10-$20 is suggested but whatever you feel that you can do will be fine (more than that is especially fine!). Numbers will be limited and I'm hoping we're going to be maxed out, so please let me know ASAP if you're interested in coming, and how many people will be in your group. I'll give you directions etc after you make your reservation. We're located about 5 minutes from Newtown train station and also near several bus stops.
