I enjoy the cd basically for the atmosphere it creates, Hope's voice is in great form and even though only one or two of the songs actually claim a life of their own to me, the mood and feeling this cd creates (like some of Mazzy Star's stuff) is great to just sit back and listen to. I'm a lyrics person but when I listen to Hope or Mazzy I really only hear the voice and the music. It's worth buying. -eric ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Feb 2002 11:29:16 -0800 (PST) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Re: hope sandoval. thea gilmore? - --- heidi maier wrote: > > i am curious to hear what other ecto folk think of > this record. it is > finally being released here in australia this week & > i've so far only read > dreadful reviews It received fairly good reviews over here. I remember seeing one so-so review; Time Out magazine liked it. Anyone know about Thea Gilmore? My fiance found her CD on sale this weekend. She's a British singer-songwriter with an acoustic feel. Hi, >It received fairly good reviews over here. I remember >seeing one so-so review; Time Out magazine liked it. I've read one review, I think it was in the Boston Globe (or was it the Hartford Courant? Can't recall), and it was very positive. woj and I, being lame, haven't gotten our own copy yet. I recently found Bevel Jenny, a funky Celtic band from Ireland. Bevel Jenny is one of the growing breed of Celtic fusion bands that explore innovative mixes of Celtic music with rock, pop, jazz and blues. Some bands pull off this combination adequately, but Bevel Jenny is just incredible. There's one song on their first CD, "Above the Clouds," which is to die for -- Aurora. The lyrics start like this: In my dreams I can do the impossible There's nothing real in my way And in this state there are no rules, fools Lord, of all that I survey... In the nighttime I can turn my world around. Mix those kind of lyrics with the smooth, lush voice that belongs to Aisling Nm Fharachtain, and you've got a song that resonates more each time you play it. The CD is simply astonishing. Mere adjectives don't do it justice. The songs on Above the Clouds are the kind of tunes that stay stuck in your head throughout the day -- and that's a good thing. The songs are lively and spirited. Of the twelve songs on this CD, six are original; six are traditional with new arrangements and considerable flair. One of the joys of being an Ectophile is discovering new musicians, and Bevel Jenny certainly is a great discovery. There's only one catch, though: Best I can tell, you have to order their CD from Europe (not a big deal if you already live there.) Two sources are http://www.irishmusicmail.com/ (buy in Euros) and http://www.irish-scottish.com (buy in pounds). You can also hop over to www.beveljenny.com for more information and some samples. (Alas, Aurora isn't one of the samples -- you'll have to wait for your CD to arrive to hear that stellar song.) - --Bill n.p. I feel the same way about Spain's La Oreja de Van Gogh. They are a bit too pop to be thought of as mainstream ecto, but I enjoy their sound all the same. Lead singer Amaia Montero does a superb job interpreting lyrics. The rest of the band does an equally good job producing a full sound, one evocative in richness (albeit not in composition) of progressive rock bands: Plenty of acoustic and electronic keyboards and guitars, nicely present bass, and good rhythms from the drums. Their "hit" _La Playa_ has been on heavy rotation in the music-video channels in the Latin world, and has become one of my favorite tunes as of late; again, good rich sounds, good singing, and an overall quality to it. Of course, the lyrics are in Spanish, so if you can understand the language you get the benefit of the poetry within; if you can't, well, we all listen to foreign music just for the music. I have not yet listened to their debut album; but their second album, _El Viaje de Copperpot_, is worth the $15 or so. - - Bill G. np: Over The Rhine - Films for radio nr: Miguel Ruiz - The Mastery of Love ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #35 *************************
