And I'm done ranting. -eric Mulholland Drive was one of my favorite films from last year, but I wouldn't say I understood it after seeing it the first time. I thought about it, and read reviews (I hardly ever read reviews before seeing a film) and other essays and found that most people came to the same general conclusions I did. (SPOILERS!!!!!!) To wit: The film is presented backwards. The first part of the film is actually the second part of the story. The first part is that old tried and true "it was all a dream" (or daydream or nightmare). The first part is the dream of the character Diane (the blonde one) from the 2nd part. Diane (Naomi Watts), is so jealous and envious of her former lover Camilla (Laura Harring) that she pays to have her killed. After she finds out that the deed has been done (via the key) she dreams (or fantasizes) about how the way things could/should have been, and that's where "Betty" and "Rita" from the first part come in. After the dream, Diane kills herself. Now, obviously, there are dozens of other details, most of which have some kind of meaning in the whole, and there are details that were thrown in simply because... well, it *is* David Lynch, after all. There are questions that will never be answered, but the gist is solid. Any questions? (Yikes, don't answer that!) Here's a nice article about the film, though the Letters section is also fascinating reading, adding details and interpretations: http://www.salon.com/ent/movies/feature/2001/10/23/mulholland_drive_analysis/index.html After all is said and done, the movie is worth seeing for the KILLER rendition of "LLorando" (Roy Orbison's "Crying" sung in Spanish) by Rebekah Del Rio. I'm a big fan of Jorane and have been since the day her first album came out a few years ago. I love her music and I'm a sucker for strings so... perfect match. I saw her in concert 4 times and I also made a website about her: www.multimania.com/sousmarinjorane. And I think the tori comparisons are definitely eclipsed with her second album. She should be releasing a new one this year as well. Gab ______________________________________________________ E-mail gratuit - Multimania - http://www.multimania.fr ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jan 2002 19:15:16 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Martin Luther King Day (Belated) Hola, This is a belated Martin Luther King Day communication. Last year a couple of songs about MLK were mentioned on the list. We didn't cover the topic this year and I had no new songs to write about until I got a Mason Jennings CD on Wednesday. Noah Adams, I think, interviewed Mason Jennings on _All Things Considered_ a couple of months ago. I was impressed by Jennings' approach to music. He sometimes sounds like Paul McCartney in his vocal style (when he is hitting high notes) and in his down-to-earth lyric writing, but with some surrealistic images dropped in ("I was waken late the other night there was a bird trapped in my heart. I tried to open up and let it out before it tore my chest apart."). Many times his vocal style reminds me of Willis Alan Ramsey, another guy who is not afraid to roll his vowels around and use a gruff voice for effect. Anyway, here is Jennings' song about MLK. Dr. King Dr. King I think often of you and the love you learned from Jesus Alabama, Bethlehem Up ahead us weve got a mighty task, To love the face behind hatred's mask 'cause on the day we understand our past God Almighty, we'll be free at last. The cd is titled _Birds Flying Away_. Jennings is joined by a low-key drummer, bass player, and saxophonist. The music is so personal that you don't realize there are other people backing Jennings up. There are some strong songs on this cd. Someone (you?) mentioned her on ecto a couple of years ago, and none of us noticed, until suddenly she appeared again on our radar and we all picked up on her--or at least many of us did. >I love her music and I'm a sucker for strings so... perfect >match. I saw her in concert 4 times and I also made a >website about her: www.multimania.com/sousmarinjorane. Oh, wonderful! And some live tracks, which I'm busily downloading as I type. Thanks for making these available. >And I think the tori comparisons are definitely eclipsed >with her second album. She should be releasing a new one >this year as well. I think Tori comparisons these days are almost like a kind of shorthand for any female artist who does anything slightly experimental pop-ish and of course for any woman who plays piano. When I think of all the artists on The Ectophiles' Guide who are compared to Tori it's amazing, but what is also amazing is how few of _them_ are like each other, while Tori is always recognizably Tori, even if she has changed and grown over the years. So it seems "like Tori" has become a kind of umbrella term. It's useful to some extent in the "if you like Tori you might like ______" kind of way, though, so I'll continue to make the comparisons myself, I'm sure. Anyway, anyone who hasn't checked out Jorane, you owe it to yourself to at least give her a listen. She's someone who will appeal to a _lot_ of ectophiles--anyone who likes pop with an experimental flavour. Anyone who likes cello. Anyone who likes emotive vocals.... - --Neile - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ............ http://www.ectoguide.org ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jan 2002 17:35:39 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Carlin Joie At 2:47 AM -0500 1/24/02, kleinpc wrote: >An ecto worth artist subscribers here might like is Carlin Joie. >I guess she's supposed to sound like Dalbello but I don't know her >stuff too well. She doesn't sound like Dalbello, but does do a cover of a Dalbello song, "Gonna Get Close to You", which is close-ish to the original. She has a _lot_ of tremelo/vibrato/whatever-you-call-it in her voice, so it's kind of like Kate Smith covering Dalbello. A very odd listening experience. Dalbello is such a powerhouse, and Carlin Joie has a totally different vibe going on from what I can gather of the rest of the tracks on mp3.com. Though she does do the cover with a lot of conviction, it still doesn't work for me. >Her site is http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/7/carlin_joie.html > >My two fav songs by her are Drowning In Temptation and To The Sea. These are much more interesting than her Dalbello cover. Kind of smooth rich-voiced pop. Those who are interested in such things should take a listen. Dalbello fans might want to listen to the "Gonna Get Close to You" cover--once--then go put Dalbello on instead. Those who don't like tremelo/vibrato/whatever-you-call-it should probably avoid this. - --Neile - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ............ http://www.ectoguide.org ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jan 2002 17:57:37 -0500 From: MPressinfo@aol.com (by way of meredith ) Subject: **Rachael Sage Page/Contest & Other News!** Hey y'all - a very belated happy & healthy New Years from all of us at MPress Records!
