Also mp3 segments of her performance! http://www.clubi.ie/twomey/katenews.htm#latest BTW, I tried to subscribe to the Lovehounds list to see if there's any buzz there. The subscription address from Gaffaweb (love-hounds-digest-request@gaffa.org) doesn't work. Doesn't anyone know if that list is still around and how to subscribe to it or a similar list? It'd be hysterical to see the performance on Oscar night. :) Most unfortunately, the song has to be originally written for the film, so Hedwig stands no chance as the songs were written for the play. Imagine Carole King fronting St. Etienne and you have Ashby. Singer-songwriter Evelyn Pope alludes to the classic pop songwriting of the Brill Building era, with classic hooks and sunny optimism, augmented by pithy character sketches and wry observations. Theres more than a little dash of Aimee Mann in her work. Her voice has a slight, distinctive rasp to it, perfect for the electronic/ bossa nova/ dreampop backdrop formulated by Popes partner in crime William Cowie. His production work is crisp and brightits equal parts Beach Boys at their most abstract and Air at their poppiest. http://www.ashbymusic.com Violet Indiana, Casino. This compilation of EPs is a disappointment after VIs debut. The mix of Robin Guthries watery guitar and Sioban de Mares film noir chanteuse act, so alluring on Roulette here becomes dreary and forced. None of the songs are developed; instead, theres just a wall of atmosphere and Concept (Cocteau Twins meets Portishead) that doesnt really go anywhere. Even taken in small doses as they were intended, they become monotonous. Heres hoping that the next release strengthens their songwriting skills. http://www.bellaunion.com - --Craig ===== Book and Music Review Editor, Spoonfed. http://www.spoonfedamerika.com Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! And Fugazi more-or-less spawned the whole "emo" genre, so if you like any of the obvious practioners, you might want to see where their roots lie. I'd agree with glenn that if you're going to have one Fugazi album, _Repeater_ should be it. If you're going to have two, the second should be _Red Medicine_. _Argument_ might be third although I have a deep fondness for the weird and atypical _Instrument_ which is mostly home-recorded demos and shows more stretch of range than any of their other material and the first two eps (packaged together as _13 Songs_) are pretty damn great; don't overlook "Furniture," a 3 song ep released at the same time as _Argument_ but featuring older songs that the band never got around to recording, and a good, cheap feet-wetter if you're curious but not ready to take an album-length plunge. Fugazi hallmarks: precision dynamics, lots of 16th notes, vocals that emphazies passion more than melody per se. Loud guitars, amazing rhythm section. _Argument_, for what it's worth, is kissing my top 5 of 2001 on one side or the other. Very close call. PS I'm pretty sure they'd be amused by the "yes" remark. - -- d. - ------------------------------------------------- Mayo-Wells Media Workshop dmw@ http://www.mwmw.com mwmw.com Web Development * Multimedia Consulting * Hosting ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #24 *************************
