Hello! I've just discovered this info via the Echoes (Pink Floyd) list and think it's exciting news for Kate Bush fans. Last Friday (Jan. 18th) she was a surprise guest of David Gilmour on his final show at the Royal Festival Hall in London, England. Kate sang the evil doctor part of Comfortably Numb as well as the harmonies on DG's part. Robert Wyatt and Bob Geldof were the guest artists the previous two shows. This was apparently her first public performance since the Secret Policeman's Third Ball, and a Peter Gabriel concert at Earl's Court in 1987. The show was recorded by a 10 camera crew so hopfully there will be a DVD release in the future. Sean Twomey's Kate Bush News and Information site has a couple of reviews from attendees: http://www.clubi.ie/twomey/katenews.htm#latest Zoltan Toth posted his photos from this show to Echoes including a couple of Kate: http://petra.hos.u-szeged.hu/~elek/pic/Gilmour/1060663_IMG.JPG http://petra.hos.u-szeged.hu/~elek/pic/Gilmour/1060666_IMG.JPG (blurry but shows the whole stage) Hope this means Kate is coming out of hibernation! About five minutes in I was saying to myself, "I know why Veda Hille loves this movie so much." :) I'm sure we were the last two people on the planet to find out that Dar Williams is on the soundtrack (albeit briefly). That woke me up! (I found the "Menses Fair" scene in which Dar's music appeared particularly hilarious. :) Bizarre movie, but highly entertaining. Great music, too. I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't gotten around to seeing it yet. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jan 2002 07:07:07 -0800 From: Jerene Waite Subject: Re: LHD Phil may be not reading at the moment, so I will try to answer for him. My boyfriend and I saw it over the summer, and I fell in love with it, rushing out to buy the soundtrack, which is one of my top 10 for the year (dang. still haven't posted it.) When I first saw the Buffy musical (another of my top 10 for the year), my initial thought was that I wished Joss had collaborated with Stephen Trask, who wrote the music and lyrics for Hedwig. Obviously, I've since come to appreciate _OM,WF_ on its own merits. JoAnn Whetsell wrote: > I've never heard of this movie. Is it new? What's it about? It's about a german man who has a botched sex-change operation, leaving her with the 'angry inch' of the title. She moves to Junction City, KS where she eventually forms a rock band. Originally an off-broadway play which was presented as more of a rock concert than anything else, the film was released last year. It's fairly hard-edged; Trask cites as one of my major influences as the Pixies, and it's quite evident in the sound. But the singing is great, the music is great, and the story is wonderful. Amusingly, one of my friends looked at the actor playing Yitzhak, Hedwig's husband, and wondered aloud, "What else have I seen him in?" and then didn't believe me when I explained that the male character was actually being played by a woman in drag... jeff n.p. some Peter Himmelman audience recording from last year that I just got in the mail... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jan 2002 08:39:34 -0700 From: "phclark" Subject: Re: LHD Phil *is* laboring. Either the soundtrack or the DVD (or possibly both :) are in our future. :) The music is great! I don't suppose the Dar Williams song is on the soundtrack? I didn't get a chance to check out that scene again before we sent the DVD back to Netflix, and it didn't sound like anything from her albums, but I may have just not been paying close enough attention. >Originally an off-broadway play which was presented as more of a rock >concert than anything else, the film was released last year. I've only seen it mentioned in the really obscure awards nominations lists. (John Cameron Mitchell got a Best Actor nomination from some group, I can't remember which ... the Chicago Film Critics or something? I can't remember.) I'd love it if "Origin of Love" came out of nowhere to get an Oscar nomination for Best Song! (Not that that would EVER happen, but it's fun to dream. It'd be hysterical to see the performance on Oscar night. :) >Amusingly, one of my friends looked at the actor playing Yitzhak, Hedwig's >husband, and wondered aloud, "What else have I seen him in?" and then >didn't believe me when I explained that the male character was actually >being played by a woman in drag... I had to go to the IMDB to confirm that, myself. For a reason I'm still trying to figure out, I saw _Bedazzled_ over the holidays and was amused to discover that Miriam Shor was in that movie too. Fugazi "The Argument" - very cool - strange mixture of influences, of course I can hear some Television in there with the double guitar attack, also some King Crimson/Fripp-esqu sounding notes . Fugazi is sort of a punked out Tool in some ways - lots of dynamics . I've never listened to other stuff by this band, they have a long history. There is a very strange part on this record where I'd swear I was listening to Yes. ( and if they heard me say that they'd kick my ass ! ) Ecto-factor: low . Low - "Things we lost in the Fire" - if you really haven't listened to them, do listen to this record ! It's so good , it's very minimalist . Reminds me of what you get when you cross Bob Mould with the Cowboy Junkies. Ecto-factor: Medium High . Sigur Ros - Aegetis Byrjum (?) . I've heard them talked about a bit on this list. From Iceland. Very icy indeed and Floydian, and spacey and mellow. Ecto-factor: High . Beachwood Sparks - Changed my mind about this band. I think they're very good. Still, obviously contrived to be the BBBs (Byrds,Buffalos,Burritos), these guys are very talented and sound at times like The Rain Parade. Ecto-factor: Medium Low . The Strokes - Also somewhat contrived. Saw 'em on Saturday Night Live last week and they improved themselves a bit in my estimation. Still very Velvets/Stooges ,but that's the way I like them. Ecto-factor: low . Mercury Rev - All is Dream - I talked about this record on the Television mail list. I entitled my little essay "Darkside of the Marquee Moon" . I think All is Dream has a real enduring and endearing classic feel to it in the same way as Marquee Moon and Darkside of the Moon. The songs are haunting and many of them very orchestral. Great bursts of guitar and noise. Elegant. Ecto-factor: Medium High . later dudes ! - Russ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jan 2002 22:14:22 -0500 From: "glenn mcdonald" Subject: RE: some ecto-ish and less-than-ecto-ish sounds > Fugazi "The Argument" ...
