This CD was sent to me by a manager who wanted us to do a house concert by someone else (Christy Claxton). We noticed he also dealt with Miranda Lee Richards, and he kindly sent that CD along too. And I really like it. It is mellow, but it slowly seeps into your conciousness. I haven't listened to it for a few months, but my recollection is more of a Lori Carson kind of sound, but more electronic then Lori's recent work. I'd definitely recommend grabbing it, particularly if it was in a cheap bin. I don't know really any more about her. Oh wait, I bet I got some info with the CD. (Quick run to the filing cabinet later...) Former model, fuzzy photos to hide the fact, blah blah blah, "previously penned two tracks with Stones send-ups the Brian Jonestown Massacre", "60's-inspired arrangements and sublte melancholic undercurrents suggest an artist whose depth goes beyond mere looks. Assisted by members of fellow LA band Beachwood Sparks, producer Jon Brion and a number of other guest players, Richards coos her way through mildly psych-touched electric/acoustic pop ballads, equal parts Dusty Springfield and Beth Orton [Beth Orton!!! That's who she reminded me of!]." It looks like the album was originally supposed to be called The Herethereafter and the Return of the Ladder, but I guess the title was shortened. She plays guitar, keyboards, harmonica and percussion. Her parents were comic book artists Ted and Teresa Richards, and she spent her childhood hanging out with underground comics artists. Well, that's a quick summary anyway. Hope that was marginally useful. neal np: My Father's Wildest Dream - TR Ritchie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jan 2002 03:00:11 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ****************** Chris Sampson (chris@neuron.uchc.edu) ****************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Chris Sampson Wed January 15 1964 Void where prohibited Dennis G Parslow Fri January 17 1964 ...of the Saint Ross Alford Thu January 17 1957 Positive Nancy Whitney Mon January 19 1959 slippery when wet Sarah Noelle Pratt Ferguson Tue January 20 1970 Seanympf-Aquarius David Beery Tue January 20 1976 drum Terry Partis Sun January 22 1933 Rocker Sarah McLachlan Sun January 28 1968 Aquarius Ilka Heber Mon February 01 1965 Mermaid Bob Lovejoy Sun February 02 1947 Aquarius Diane Burke Sat February 02 1963 slow children Timothy S. Clear voice with piano driver acoustic music (incl bass violin chello), experimental from time to time, spoken-word in-between songs. 3 albums so far though afaik not mentioned here yet..(right?) The only comparison i can think of right now is Veda Hille in some distant way, but more ethereal.. She's planning a european tour, which might be interesting for fellow international members. cheers ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jan 2002 11:08:58 -0800 (PST) From: kitty kat Subject: Re: Portland-area Ectos? We listened to the album and both really enjoy it. She's got a strong yet breathy voice, and I really like her piano playing and music. Her voice is unusual in its distinctiveness--sort of like Rickie Lee Jones--but not at all sounding like Ricke Lee (if that makes any sense at all). Just uniquely and refreshingly her own. I've only heard The Musician album but was quite taken with it--the weird in-between song bits are kind of strange but interesting--I don't know how well they'll hold up to repeated listenings--but the songs are very cool. She also seems to be a pretty fiercely independent musician. Neal and I decided to present her in our house concert series in June, but we haven't settled on an exact date yet. I think she fits the "Ecto" definition very well and am surprised she hasn't been brought up more (great piano, ethereal vocals, fiercely independent, unique song structures, interesting accompaniment, etc.) Last night we presented Penny Jo Pullus--who put on a really great show--even better than either Neal or I expected. She's a bit more country than what we usually do--but in a good way--kind of the Emmylou Harris/Maria McKee alt-country/americana type thing. Really strong vocals, her average guitar playing, and her friend John's amazing guitar playing and backing vocals, and their other friend John's nice snare drum accompaniment--made for a real nice night of music. She's got two CDs, Lucky #7 which she played every song off of, and an earlier more rocking album called Acme Volcano--which on first listen I liked a lot. Her new one, My Time to Howl, is due out later this year. Highly recommend her to fans of that sort of alt/country/twang genre. I don't have much to add to Jeff's description of the show that would just be repetition.
