Pravatiner" Subject: Nicht Nicht und andere stories Among those heavily into folk music, Pete Seeger is anything but unremembered. I strongly suspect that the contributor who called him an "unremembered lefty folkie" is not, himself, much into folk music in the present era. BTW, decades before I caught the Nields' act in Jersey, I was taken as a child to a children's concert given by Seeger. Ironically, the concert itself is, to use a term apparently with some currency in these pages, unremembered by me; all I remember is my father telling me that that was what I was being taken to. As fate would have it, through a convoluted bit of genealogy, Pete also happens to be the half-uncle by marriage, or something like that, of the late, great Kirsty MacColl; so he does have at least that much of a rational nexus to the kind of music currently of most interest to Ectophiles. Bert Kaempfert, on the other hand--now there's someone who probably deserves to be unremembered :-). But the record of his that was marketed in the English-speaking world as "Wonderland by Night" would have been known in German as "Wunderland bei Nacht," not "Nicht" as another contributor had it. Then again, in a way "Wonderland by Not" seems like rather an apt description of a Kaempfert-free environment :-). According to my browser, their page currently says: "badtaste.dk is being renovated.. please check again later!" So your best bet for purchasing _Von_ at the moment would probably be EBay or somesuch. By the way, have you heard the album, or are you planning to buy it on faith after being mesmerized by _Agaetis Byrjun_? I'd just like to point out that _Von_ is not like the much-acclaimed second album. Most tracks are... well, for lack of a better word, boring. There are two or three good songs on the disc, and the album does hint at the greatness which is to follow it, but that really is pretty much it. Most of the album consists of instrumental, quiet, ambient soundscapes which, while they certainly will disturb few ears, don't provide much anything to enthuse about, either. It's kinda like a really watered down My Bloody Valentine. I feel the urge to listen to most of _Von_ pretty much like I feel the need to listen to my CD of humpback whales singing. Now, I'm not saying you or anyone else shouldn't get it - the couple of good songs might be worth the money, and of course it's good to support such a brilliant band - but you may want to think twice about it if you're not a Sigur Rss completist. Juha P.S. There exists a remix album of _Von_ which I've been told is considerably better than the original. Haven't heard it though. n.p. This site used to have an English page, but I can't find it now. In fact, in Netscape the page is messed up (and there's a flash intro, but you can skip it) so I had to launch my rarely used Internet Explorer to look at it. Here's their blurb... "This week on newground: take a special look back on the music of 2001 and hear an interview and unreleased music from one of the most exciting new acts to emerge during that calamitous year, Iceland's Sigur Rss. Host Chris Douridas spins some of his favorite tracks from the past 365 and talks with members of Sigur Rss about their stunning US debut Agftis Byrjun, the current Icelandic music scene, and how they create their strange and beautiful songs." Apologies to those of you with an average/slow net connection - I find that Spinner.com works well for me, but then again, I'm taking shameless advantage of the T1 connection here at work. If I remember correctly, host Chris Douridas used to be the guy at KCRW who did the ecto-friendly show "Morning Becomes Eclectic" (and may have hosted some of the Sessions at West 54th shows?). The drawback about the newground show is that you have to listen to the whole thing to get to the bits you want. You've been warned. Hi, everybody....!!!!!!!!! SHOWS: this Friday, January 11th, at the Balcony (Troc), Philadelphia, PA ,12am, ages 21+ next Saturday, January 19th, at Rex's, West Chester, PA, 10:30pm, (we play first) ages 21+ Well, we have good news and bad news. First of all, let me say that i truly appreciate all of the e-mails asking when the new CD will be out and when we will be playing in your areas . We do answer every e-mail that we receive BUT we are a little behind right now... SO, if you have sent an e-mail and are waiting for a response, please don't be mad! you will get an e-mail back soon! BAD NEWS: the CD release date has changed again. For our friends overseas, you will be able to get the CD as of March 3, 2002. For our friends in the USA, the date is April 16th, 2002. We ask that the those of you in the USA wait until April for 2 reasons. (1) To save yourself high import charges and (2) to help us make a dent in the SoundScan charts over here the first week that it is available. That is one thing that will really help us try and get noticed/played over here!!! GOOD NEWS: The dates have been moved so that they can stir up some press/interest and good stuff like that in order to give us a shot at being heard. The US office has hired an independent PR firm to handle us. Also, we got an e-mail from our label rep on the Germany side who said that she received the first review of the new album. She said that Rock Hard (-"the biggest metal/ rock magazine here in Germany") reviewed the album and gave us 9 out of 10 points. Hooray!!!!! MORE NEWS: The web site is being re-vamped and will include a news section/updates, new pictures & samples of the new music/lyrics/etc... we are hoping that this will be up and running within 30 days. thank you all so much for your patience and support!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't remember how old I was, probably a pre-teen but here goes: It was either one of these: "Monster Mash" by Bobby (Boris) Pickett and the Crypt Kickers on Garpax Records or "Theme from Dr. Kildare" by Valjean on piano Yes, I liked instrumental piano music even as a kid. Which probably led me to synthesizers. By the way, the B side of that 45 was........are you ready for this? "Theme from Ben Casey" not a joke either. Ben Casey (Vince Edwards) and Dr.Kildare played by Richard Chamberlain were (I think) the first two medical dramas on TV. They were very popular shows at the time and so the themes to the shows became a 45rpm record. First Concert - Dave Clark Five from England (I was in 8th grade) Second Concert - The Nazz (w/Todd Rundgren) and the Doors - Summer of 1967 at Town Hall, Phila,PA Very interesting concert. The Nazz opened up for the Doors and they did a 13 minute version of Mothers of Invention's "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" Long instrumentals were virtually unheard of back in 1967. Most people were expecting "Hello It's Me". The Doors came on next with Jim Morrison in black leather pants and "Break on Through" was the Doors first hit single at the time. "Light my Fire" was released later that summer. The Doors almost ran out of material, as they only had 1 album in the works. Best All Time Concert - I attended the original Woodstock (Summer of 1969) and still wasn't old enough to drive. tom m. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #10 *************************
