Refers back to a few other comments in the ectoguide. Additional comments would be welcome. I read all the other comments about her fiery spirit and confrontational manner and was looking forward to a really dramatic album. Instead I find myself agreeing with Neile. There is an unlisted bonus track that is a dramatic change of pace, but the album as a whole is very smooth and easy on the ears. Magdalen has a fine voice and is a good piano player, but I'm not hit with anything that distinguishs this from the other decent piano playing singers I've been exposed to. There are some nice touchs throughout, with some tasty cello on one track and atmospheric drum programming on another. The lyrics are uniformly personal and evocative. The album reads very well, addressing issues of race, identity, generational differences and isolation, as well as a touching ode to Matthew Shepard. In fact, there really is a lot that is confrontational on the album, but that isn't reflected in the pretty songs, which sonically stick to a pretty familiar piano/vocal sound. This seems a particular shame when you get to the bonus track, a flailing rocker with wild piano and frenzied vocals. Magdalen shrieks and growls and refuses to be ignored. I like what goes before. The subtle melodies and tasteful playing is probably going to grow on me over time. But if she mixed that wild energy into some of these other tracks, I might be gushing along with the others. I suspect all of this music really comes to life in a live performance. neal np: Fire - Magdelin Hsu-Li (http://www.magdelinhsuli.com) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 05 Jan 2002 00:39:02 -0700 From: betcey ventrella Subject: Re: My first music purchase My 1st 45 purchase was Carole King's "I Feel the Earth Move" at K-Mart for 49"! Over here, where people are frozen with the fear of lack of cred, when anyone surfaces in the press to admit what they first got, they tend to say "Oh, yeah, the first record I got was a white pressing of the Buzzcock's first release". What they mean, really, is that the first record they got was Boney M from Woolworth's. Sadly, I have no idea what I first got. I suspect that the first album was something called "Showtime - the Best of Broadway" (I grew up with lots of showtunes around the house) and that the first single was "Annie's Song" by John Denver. I could be wrong. It could have been "Please Come to Boston" by....umm....somebody. I didn't get into rock until I was 14, so the first album I actually bought was probably Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", which i still think is a great album. My sister was luckier -- she's got Beatle's EP's that are probably worth a small fortune by now. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Jan 2002 08:43:08 -0500 From: brad Subject: first concert My first was either Gordon Lightfoot or Heart. I called the DJ to tell her Syreeta Wright sang the only version with lyrics, and I'd search for a copy... I found it listed in the Schwann catalog on a new compilation of Motown love songs, and ordered the CD, but when I received it, the Syreeta Wright song was *missing*... two days later, while searching through a tape cassette cut-out bin, I stumbled upon the same compilation, but with Syreeta Wright's version *included*... serendipity! First MP3 I downloaded: "Anastasia Changes Her Mind" by Paul Kelly, because my best friend kept on raving to me that I had to hear this guy. He was right. /nm {thirty hours, five airports, four times through Customs ... It kind of makes me wish that I had done what an old college friend and fellow dj had done with his collection; he kept everything in the order that he purchased it in. Since my own vinyl collection stopped at around 1500 (like another friend I took to estimating it by feet) I'm probably better off having it alphabetized. Anyway my first single was a mid 60's Beatles release and I don't remember my first lp. However I do remember first encountering Renaissance on the old Mike Douglas show (they performed Carpets of the Sun). Come to think of it I first discovered Kate Bush on Saturday Night Live: she did Them Heavy People and I was hooked). Maybe it is just me but it seems hard to imagine this kind of thing happening today - unfortunately. np: Alive and Lickin' - Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Jan 2002 22:25:59 -0700 From: Jessica Byers Subject: Re: grammy nominations Does it strike anyone as odd that Lucinda is nominated for best rock vocal, when the album the song is on was nominated as folk? Can she have it both ways? I guess so. Seems just a bit unfair (though its a good song). Personally, I am appalled that Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer's Drum Hat Buddha was not nominated for best comtemporary folk album. But I guess I shouldnt be. Good stuff. I t was the live album, I'm not certain if they have others....I admit my ignorance of this band. Just that their album was enjoyable, and now sits on the shelf at my station. :) Black Dove In a message dated 01/04/2002 6:29:00 PM Pacific Standard Time, owner-ecto-digest@smoe.org writes: > lots of tour dates for ya. > jess ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V8 #6 ************************
