I recently got a copy of Magdalin's new CD Fire. I think it's generally ok, but hasn't bowled me over yet. There are some really enthusiastic comments in the Ectoguide about her older work. I was curious if anyone could compare the new album to the older ones. Also, any comments on the new album for the guide would be appreciated. My favorite part of Fire is the hidden track that is a raukous rocker that sounds nothing like anything that came before. It's really in your face about her "chink rock" approach, and shows there is another side to her than the quieter piano-based pieces that preceeded it. neal np: commercial radio - "Fall On ME" - R.E.M. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Jan 2002 16:45:43 -0700 From: Neal Copperman Subject: Best of 2001 Here's my list of what caught my fancy this year. As usual, I'm not inclined to stick to the rule of must be released in the last year. As far as I'm concerned, if I bought it, it's fair game. I also do somewhat of a gestalt list, in that I throw concerts and CD's into the mix to arrive at artists that struck me for the year, rather then just their current albums. ******************************************************************************* Best Concerts: I saw 120 shows this year, but a few immediately rise to the top. * Ectofest West & the postfest party - Hands down, the best show of the year. It didn't take more then a second for me to come up with this, and i didn't have to consult my notes. Veda stole the show with one of the most riveting performances I've seen, and one that left her in tears. Happy's set was remarcable for how good it was despite her recent injury. (How is Happy doing anyway?) And everyone else on the bill put on solid sets. * Bonfire Madigan The best show that happened at my house. I only got to put on 9 shows before we moved to Jeff's place, and this was the final one. The intensity of this performance, to the totally packed living room, was amazing. Listening to recordings, the sound is so dense and thick. ******************************************************************************* Best performers (and music): Veda Hille * Field Study (Best of 2001) Another year, another incredible Veda album. And her performance at ectofest west was the best performance of the year. Sigur Rss * Agftis Byrjun (Best of 2001 if you go by US release dates) Juha picked this up for me at the beginning of the year. I never would have guessed that it would be released in the US (2 years after it's Icelandic release), and be featured prominantly in Vanilla Sky. This is some of the most haunting music I heard this year, and guaranteed to appeal to fans of Radiohead. The lyrics are all in Icelandic and Hopelandic (a made up language that is indistiguishable from Icelandic to my ears), and one of their hallmark sounds is a bowed violin. Bonfire Madigan * Saddle the Bridge (the best of the 3 BMad albums, on Kill Rock Star) * ...From The Burnpile * Rock Stop * Sleeping Off Stolen Dreams Soundtrack Madigan was a great discovery this year. I didn't even get to hear much of her music before we had them play one of the most exciting house concerts we've had so far. A string trio (cello, string bass and drums) playing punk blues. This music blew away my crowded living room, and has revisited my player throughout the year. Over The Rhine: * Films for Radio (Best of 2001) * Good Dog Bad Dog * Darkest Night of the Year * Besides * Amateur Shortwave Radio At the end of last year, Jeff lent me Good Dog, Bad Dog, and I wondered why I had stopped listening to OTR. That album was excellent. In December I ordered their back catalog, and this year got Films for Radio when it came out. Not all the old albums are as good as the new ones, though they have some wonderful songs on them. GDBD is a great accoustic album, and FFR shows that they paid a lot of attention when they were on tour with the Cowboy Junkies. FFR was one of my favorite releases this year. Lush, atmospheric, moody, catchy, and the usual lovely OTR album cover. I did see them in Santa Fe, but it's really the strength of their albums more then their show that hit me this year. Willow * Sweet Dark Demon (Best of 2001) * Willow Neile introduced me to Willow's music with a sampling of songs from her solo accoustic album. I was so smitten with them, particularly the scary insightful world of a schizophrenic woman in Four Corners, that I asked her to come and do a house concert. She came, with full band and her brand new album, and blew us all away. SDD reminds me a bit of Over the Rhine. They don't sound alike, but they have a similar vibe. Willow's got a darker, huskier voice and gets inside of her characters in a spooky way. Annie Gallup: * Swerve (Best of 2001) * Courage My Love * Steady Steady Yes I caught Annie Gallup at Folk Alliance in February and was intrigued by the 3 song set she played. She sent us a CD (Courage My Love), and I fell in love with her clever short story songs. They are wordy and intricate, but somehow still catchy too. I might worry that songs so much like stories would get old, but they haven't seemed to at all. This year I got three of her CD's, and they are all excellent. Jorane * 16mm I was undecided about going to Folk Alliance, but seeing that Jorane was going to be there was what finally made up my mind. I was crushed to only see her perform 3 songs, but they were incredible. And she was hilarious to talk to. You have to be careful talking to Jorane. She could put your eye out, she's that animated. I picked up 16mm then, and have been totally into it. I don't understand why people don't like it as much as the first album. It is full of so many intersting layers and textures. It reminds me a lot of Iva Bittova on her Inferno disc. Hannah Fury * Meat Hook (single) (Best of 2001) * Soul Poison * The Thing That Feels I borrowed the full length discs from Jeff early in the year and wouldn't give them back for months. They were so rich. Gothic etherealness. The Meat Hook single actually came out this year, and when I made a list of just 2001 releases I thought were excellent, there were only about 7 and that single was on it. It contains excellent covers of Berlin's The Metro and Abba's The Winner Takes It All. So take note Andrew.... it looks like there are a few more songs you can still aquire. Wendy Rule * World Between Worlds Wendy's music became a lot more vivid to me once I'd seen it live and heard her talk about her songs. I came to realize the personal meaning that lived behind all the mythology, and it gave the songs extra depth. It was interesting to hear her perform solo after the layered approach of the albums. Blind Boys of Alabama * Spirits of the Century (Best of 2001) This was another Folk Alliance discovery. Real World was giving them away. I'd never have bought this otherwise, but I can't believe how good it is. It's rooted in gospel, but it's got such an edge and intensity. I saw them in concert too, in Santa Fe. They were good, and it was impressive to see some of these old guys play such an impassioned set. But I think the CD, with it's pile of guest stars, pushes the music in more interesting directions. * Enchanting Musical Treasures from Burma - White Elephants & Golden Ducks * Pat Waing: The Magic Drum Circle Of Burma This was a very strange discovery for me. I was streaming a friend's freeform show at Rice University when he played a selection from the Pat Waing album. The Pat Waing is a circle of 24 tuned drums, and the sound was incredible. I went home that night and ordered this album. Later, Jeff and I were in Phoenix to see Jane Siberry, and we did some local CD shopping. They had the Elephants & Ducks disc in a used store and I grabbed it, not even realizing it was part of the same series. It has a wider range of instruments, but what really hit me was the piano music. Yeah, piano music from Burma. It's wild and reckless, sounding like someone is just flinging themselves randomly at the keyboard, but there is a recognizable structure to it too. I finally got around to listening to this on my recent trip to Arizona, and when I got home, I ordered a disc of just piano music. There are a few more in the series I don't have. (CD's on Shanachie.) Johnny Cash * Live at Folsom Prison * At San Quentin Re-issues of the year. These two seminal live albums from Johnny Cash capture him during the strongest part of his career, in 1968 and 1969. I grew up listening to these concerts, which my parents had. The original releases were dramatically abreviated though. These versions are the full shows which have several more songs on each one. Excellent liner notes too. Kim Barlow * Humminah Kim's from the Yukon and also put on a great show at Folk Alliance. Her stuff reminds me a little bit of Jane Siberry's self-titled first album. The really folk one. And a hint of Bound by the Beauty too. Kim's got a lot of musicians who play with her and pretty oddball arrangements, which I definitely liked. I just checked her web site and she released a new album since then, and it's on it's way to my house. I think a lot of folks would like this one. Molly Zenobia * Skin * Wind Chains For me, Molly was the highlight of this year's ectofest. Her exuberant piano playing and varied and unique singing immediately caught my fancy. Both CD's are excellent. Slaid Cleaves * Broke Down Slaid's brand of Americana was a winner at folk alliance, and his CD has returned regularly to my player throughout the year. It's not what I usually listen to, but that's ok. ******************************************************************************* Books: Nothing that will end up on my all time best list, but the ones that most struck me were: Winter's Tale - Mark Helprin All Soul's Rising - Madison Smartt Bell Geek Love - Katherine Dunn ******************************************************************************* Notable Movies: Requiem for a Dream Yi Yi Memento Under the Sand Ghost World Fight Club Himalaya Monsters, Inc Amelie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Mulholland Drive Waking Life Bread and Tulips Worst movie I saw: Serendipity neal np: The best of KUNM ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2002 12:46:14 +1100 From: Andrew Fries Subject: Re: lynn canfield (and kirsty thirsk?) on 1/1/02 sspan@magpage.com wrote: >I saw Lynn with HTP a few years back, haven't heard anything since, so I >don't know what she's up to now.
