The Onion's av club (http://www.theonionavclub.com/ have done theirs, and Q magazine has its list in the latest edition. I like the av club, but have problem with their round-ups, feeling they're on a "I'm-more-eclectic-than- you" kind of kick. Added to which, I've never really gotten over them listing the terminally dull Yo La Tengo's "and suddenly everything turned itself inside out". This year, naturally, all the critics line up to froth at the mouth at Radiohead's "Amnesiac" and a couple even pick "Reveal" by REM. Maybe it wasn't as good a year as I thought... over at Q, meanwhile, they not only praise this album, but also find time to lavish honours on Semisonic, Muse, Stereophonics and Travis, all who released album to extremely mixed (and, in the case of Semisonic and Muse, downright violently negative) reviews. Now, I know that we all have our faves that we'd like to see there -- I'm still pulling for Matthew Jay's "Draw" -- but even those that I'd thought were sure shots -- Nick Drake, Sparklehorse, the Beta Band -- get passed over, which strikes me as a little odd. More than a little odd. Meanwhile, Q also runs on article on "100 Women Who Rock Your World". I also find this mildly dispiriting. Sure, I don't expect to see Veda Hille or Jonatha Brooke or Melissa Ferrick down there, but it would have been nice to see Sarah Mclachlan or the Indigo Girls. But no. Laura Nyro gets beaten by the Corrs and the Spice Girls, Sandy Denny gets beaten by Destiny's Child, Shelby Lynne and Pat Benatar, Bessie Smith gets beaten by Shania Twain, Joan Armatrading gets beaten by Heart...it's all too much. Aimee Mann makes a brave appearance at 42, beaten by the two from ABBA at 37 and Fiona Apple at 32. Patti Smith, at 17, mercifully beats Alanis M. by 1 place. The good news is that Polly Harvey comes first, followed by Madonna, with Kate Bush, Tori Amos, and Bjork following. The bad news is that the overrated Debbie Harry comes in at 6, beating Joni Mitchell at 8, and Stevie Nicks is at 9 beating Janis Joplin at 10. (yeah, yeah, IMHO) Another bit of interesting news contained in Q is that someone released a "bootleg" Portishead album called "Pearl" that, it is revealed, is actually by "MOR trip-hoppers Mandalay". Well, it interested me. I'm still working on my list. Probably have it ready by the middle of next year. Don't wait up. adam k. (yeah, yeah, IMHO) I just don't understand how Debbie Harry is always so high on these lists! She hasn't released anything credible since the early 80s and now Blondie is just a joke, especially live. Stevie Nicks on the other hand should be MUCH higher...she's still releasing impressive work. -eric "i think, I could like you if you'd let me drive your car" ~throwing muses ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Dec 2001 10:08:25 -0500 From: "Jeffrey C. The Devics, My Beautiful Sinking Ship. This L.A. band plays cinematic cabaret and torch-song music; it wouldnt sound out of place in a vintage noir film, all shadows and tainted glamour. The singer, Sara Lov, has a voice that references Marianne Faithful, PJ Harvey and Julee Cruse (on the high register); her yearning, world-weary voice fits in with this mixture of sea shanties, dark surf music and piano-based music. Melodramatic and dreamy, this CD is a lights out affair. Gotta hit the courthouse by 8:30. Hey, it's snowing. It's snowing 3 times harder in my backyard then out front. Go figure. Court is such a bizarre world. 90% of the cases are missing people, resulting in either a bench warrant or dismissal. I register as a witness. They say they'll call me. They never do. Case after case is dismissed. Some tattooed and pierced guy gets up and pleads no contest to something, they reduce his charges and let him go. My guy is called. He drove through my neighbors yard, destroyed a lot of property and smashed my car. Probably did eight to ten thousand dollars damage. He walks up there. The cop walks up there. I sit and wait. The judge says "you've been charged with failure to maintain your lane, how do you plead?" "No contest sir" "Ok, I'll reduce your ticket so your record remains clean, no points, you owe court costs. Next." And that was it. Less then one minute. Somehow I missed my chance to say anything. Did he have any idea what "failing to maintain his lane" actually meant? I can't believe I got up early to watch this, but figure I may as well invest more of my time in the hopes of getting something out of it. The next docket consists of more serious cases. DWI's and domestic violence. These people don't get off so easy. They bring in a bunch of prisoners in shackles. They can't afford bond at $250, so they end up in jail. They all have stories as to why they should be set free. Some are set free, others are stuck. Sad, ruined, failed lives. People who can't manage to scrounge up a few hundred dollars to keep themselves out of jail. The public defender looks like she's 21 years old. None of the prisoners seem to take her seriously. The DA is cute. On and off throughout the morning, a woman and her lawyer are called up on some sort of mysterious case. The lawyer argues about arcane points of law he doesn't seem to understand, calling for a dismissal. The judge tells him he is totally wrong, no dismissal. They ask for an immeiate trial, and get one within the hour. I can't leave. I'm fascinated by whatever mystery they are going to argue about. I'm rewarded by a case with a high titilation factor. The woman is charged with disturbing the peace for having sex in her car. There are no witnesses and virtually no evidence. There is some chance that the police intimidated her into a confession. Everyone swears to tell the truth, but no one has anything to say that vaguely resembles what anyone else has to say. All comments made at the crime scene are thrown out due to possible police duress. The woman is found not guilty. She's probably guilty (as if anyone cares) but there really is no case. Oddly enough, I came across the same thing just a few days ago. Hiking in the snow in the Sandia's, I round a bend to find a young man standing on the trail with his pants open- fully exposed, with a woman sitting at a rock at his feet. He quickly sheaths himself and makes feeble attempts at intelligent conversation. "So, uh, how uh far, uh, this trail, uh, how far does it, uh,go?" "I dunno, I've got a map, you wanna look at it?" (Like they want to look at it. Like they don't just want me to go away.) "No, that's ok, we're going back anyway." Around the next bend I run into 5 more people heading up the trail. I finally get to work by 11:00. Yesterday's visitors have a bunch of cool tours I can tag along on. We go to see the Z machine, where they are doing nuclear fusion experiments. It costs $1 million dollars a week to run. The machinery is immersed in liquid. The outer ring of generators is immersed in oil. The inner ring is all covered in water. The maintenance crew are all trained scuba divers and they work on the machinery underwater. They can only run the machine once a day, and then spend the rest of the day cleaning up and preparing for the next day. The target of the experiments are elaborately woven 10 micron tungston threads. (http://www.sandia.gov/pulspowr/facilities/zaccelerator.html) Then we go look at robots. Robots to dismantle dangerous weapons. (http://www.sandia.gov/isrc/Demil.html) Robots so small you can't see them. "Don't touch anything in here, cause everything is so small you could mess something up." All I can see are "micro tweasers" the size of a paperclip that are used to work on them. I bail out before we go see the micromachines (http://mems.sandia.gov/scripts/index.asp ) and the fab, and walk back to my office. My local manager asks me if I want to be Osama bin Laden in tomorrows party. All I have to do is find a beard, make myself a turban and white outfit, and wander around like I've been hit by a truck. My boss from back home sends me an e-mail that says "I hear you are coming back home on January 22nd. That isn't true, is it?" Then he sends another e-mail saying "nevermind". They already asked me if I was planning on coming back in January. I said I wanted to stay out here as long as possible. They said, That can probably be arranged. After two years, my job is even less defined. It's not clear what they get out of the arrangement, but they'd rather extend it than actually talk about that. I go and see a late showing of Richard Linklater's Waking Life. It's all about dreams within dreams within dreams. What does reality mean? What does perception mean? How should you experience life? Virtually the entire movie could easily be turned into an album by Laurie Anderson. I can hear her voice speeking so much of the dialog. In the front row, a huge man with long tangled hair keeps falling asleep. His head falls backwards over his chair and jerks back upright. Occasionally he starts to snore, and sometimes even wakes himself up. What sort of dreams would you have while watching a dreamlike movie about lucid dreaming and the inability to distinguish reality from fantasy? At the end of the movie, he stands up and sleepily staggers out of the theater. He's huge, and wears his pants about three inches below his waist. I am "treated" to far more skin than I have any desire to see, but it is so perfect. He could have walked straight out of that movie, or perhaps a dream. i got home at midnight. There was a package waiting for me from the Entertainment Fulfillment Center. I'm almost afraid to open it. neal np: Sweet Exhaust - Sara Craig ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #356 **************************
