Putting these on still seems like a bit of an alternate reality experience to me. This time we featured SONiA. This was a particular treat for me, as SONiA used to be in disappear fear, one of my favorite local bands in Baltimore. I must have seen them seven or eight times a year for at least a decade. SONiA's got a new CD out, Live at the Down Home, which is actually a pretty fair approximation of the show we experienced. We were close to a full house (47 people), including special guest ectophile Sherlyn Koo (theoretically of Australia). Remarkably, Sherlyn manages to be the first ectophile to attend one of our house concerts. (I'm sure there must be someone closer out there.) SONiA started off with a ton of old disappear fear songs. In my book, early df sounds somewhat similar to early indigo girls. While most of these songs are easily a decade old, they still sound incredible. And that's not just nostalgia talking, as most of the people at the show were unfamiliar with any of that music. Old albums sold just as well as new ones. Songs like Box of Tissues, Postcard from Texas, and 16 Roses are classic personal relationship songs. SONiA went on to play songs from both or her solo albums too. The highlight was easily Me, Too, the title track to her last studio album. The first time I heard this song, at the Me, Too CD release party several years ago, I was floored with how powerful it was. If anything, after September 11, it seems like a real anthem for the country, and is all the more moving for it. A live performance of this song always moves me to the verge of tears, as it celebrates people in pursuit of a life they believe in, whether it's a Vietnam vet or his lesbian daughter. SONiA's music is actually pretty simple. She accompanies herself on guitar and harmonica, and isn't really a virtuoso on either of them. Her songs aren't complicated or tricky. But they are full of emotion and sincerity, and have the catchy longevity of a classic folk tune. neal np: very introspective, actually - a tribute to the pet shop boys (I got this for Anna Maria. Only up to track 4 so far, but am not too impressed yet. Then again, I was actually tempted to buy it just for the chance to hear Nicole Blackman's deconstruction of West End Girls. I'm trying hard not to just jump up to track #14 and see how it is.) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #345 **************************
