Below is a review I wrote about her latest release "Swerve" With each new release by Annie Gallup I'm left just in astonishment at her talent. I think, oh this is it, she can never top this, but then a new release and bam, she's got me shaking my head. Well, what's up? To begin with, She is the most interesting storyteller I've heard. Combine that with a very unique, sexy, talky, country, twangy, beautiful voice, tasteful arrangements and super guitar playing, I guess it adds up. I met her once at a house concert and was totally infatuated and mesmerized by her style, her delivery and her magnetic aura that totally engulfed me. She had just released her first CD and I realized most of the songs she played at the house concert were not on the CD. It became evident to me, that this woman has a lot of songs in her, and she has been gushing them forwards ever since...yes. I just listened to this CD today and tried to figure out why I'm so gone for this thing. I really can't write about it, it's impossible to convey its essence thru words, at least for me. I thought about the first song, "Money" and the lyrics " When you told me, honey, you'd love me forever. Was your money on the end of the world?" That floored me, but you need all the elements to really get it, that is, you need to hear it. From the beginning, her song writing has been the key and that has never changed, and never has she shinned so brightly as she has on this album. I love every cut and will listen many times and probably memorize all the lyrics. Good thing the lyrics are included, and I know I'm hooked when I grab that lyric sheet. In another universe, one that appreciated talent, and considered money as paper, Annie would be the brightest and sharpest of all Spears. Sorry, sometimes it just gets to you. Jack Sutton....hrmusic Neal wrote: Annie Gallup: This was a house concert Jeff and I put on. Annie is really stunning. I'm surprised I haven't seen her name mentioned more. Each of her songs are like short stories, which she accompanies with excellent finger-picking guitar. I hear a healthy dose of early Suzanne Vega in her voice, though I can buy that Joni Mitchell/Lou Reed lovechild thing I kept reading about. Her stories often have a magical/fantastical twist to them, but still often have a chorus that'll leave you humming too. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 20:27:49 -0000 From: "neal copperman" Subject: Re: Left Handed Demos & NM Welcome Betcey, betcey ventrella said: > I'm *still* looking for info on how ---> where ---> I can order Left Hand > Demos! On the Auntie Social site, I can find the lyrics, but no ordering > info . . . anyone? The story behind Left Handed Demos is that Happy had her west coast debut at Ectofestwest. (Some ectophiles in CT have been putting on a festival featuring Happy and/or other ectophilic artists for the last 3 years. Ectofestwest was the first west coast one, in Santa Cruz CA.) Happy seriously injured her left hand, slicing it open with a box cutter. The Left Handed Demos came about as a way for fans to contribute to Happy's medical expenses. She didn't like the idea of her fans just sending her money, but wanted to offer something in return. A CD-R of "throw aways" was put together. Anyone who sent a donation to Happy, or simply requested one, would eventually get one. All the CD's were then burnt and packaging printed by volunteers, and they went out in the mail a few weeks ago. So that's the background. I can't imagine that you can't still get a copy (and make a donation if interested). Unfortunately, I don't have the addresses handy. I'm sure one of the coordinators will pop in soon with those details. (They probably are just exhausted from making all those CD's and not excited about making any more!) > <> > > Neal - where in NM are you? I'm guessing you have a small music club there? There are two ectophiles in New Mexico - myself and Jeff Hanson. We are actually old friends who met in San Diego (via ecto!) about a decade ago. We've each lived in a lot of different places and a few years ago both ended up in New Mexico. For the last year and a half we have been doing a house concert series, first at my place and more recently at Jeff's. So three of those shows I mentioned were house concerts we presented. Aside from that, I also volunteer at the Outpost Performance Space, which hosts a lot of interesting shows in town. (Oh, sorry, the town is Albuquerque.) Let me know if you (or anyone!) are ever coming to Albuquerque. I'm always eager to meet other ectophiles. Our house concert schedule looks like: Nov 28 - SONiA from disappear fear January 14 or 15 - Penny Jo Pullus from Texas February 7 - Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem March 24 - Eliza Gilkyson April 11-15 - Sloan Wainwright (assuming her SW tour works out) April 27 or 28 - Lynn Miles somewhere May 13-16 - Small Potatos neal np: stuff - holly mcnarland ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2001 12:50:42 -0800 From: Phil Hudson Subject: RE: Left Hand Demos Hi Alex and Betcey, here is http://www.artist-shop.com/auntiesocial/lefthand.htm , a Web page kindly put up by Gary of the Artist Shop, for Left Hand Demos. The site also has a mailing address to send checks if you prefer paper. Please email me with your street addresses, as I'm coordinating the mailing out of the CDs. For those of you who have been waiting so patiently, I'm sending out all the international requests at the end of this week, along with a bunch of domestic orders. Some of the international folks have kindly agreed to receive a number of CDs and distribute them to others in their respective countries; thanks people, it helps with postage and handling. Fog kindly took over the printing duties, due to problems with my printers, and has a batch of 25 that he will mail out. That should pretty much bring us up to date except for a few stragglers, so thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding, the Cds are in the mail! Notably Luther was/is the guitarist for Weeping Tile. I say "is" since the band is reuniting for a couple of southern Ontario shows in December. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org]On Behalf Of adamk@zoom.co.uk Sent: Wednesday, November 14, 2001 3:26 AM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: Sarah Harmer goes prog? Did anyone else notice this in Gary's recent newsletter?: "TRIBUTE- PINK FLOYD-REBUILD THE WALL/COMPLETE (2CD) $21.95 Luther Wright & the Wrongs fourth release sees them reinterpreting Pink Floyd's classic The Wall in a country bluegrass style, subtly changing the lyrics & making the songs their own. Guests include former Weeping Tile front woman Sarah Harmer. 26 tracks total. " Interesting concept. Interesting line-up. adam k. If you're into dreamy, slow, dark/moody songs (a la Julee Cruise, Portishead), check out Azure Ray. I've been listening to this album a lot recently and I love it. It's two female (Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor) singer/songwriters and the songs are gorgeous... From an article I read recently: "Indie label-ghetto obscurity will keep this from attaining massive popularity. But an indie-ghetto habitui such as your self shouldn't have any trouble digging up a copy of this. If maudlin but beautiful, expertly crafted pop songs keep a room in your heart's hotel (under an assumed name, naturally), get with it. You friggin' wuss, you." Annie Gallup - I came across her music through my association with Prime CD. First her 3rd CD, Courage My Love, then when she came through Chicago at a fledgling coffeehouse - and subsequently at several Folk Alliances. Her songs are indeed amazing - the more one listens, the more layers there seem to be. And the magical twists that Jack Sutton mentions in his comments!! (I admit a weakness for two of her magical songs - James (the magician love song from Steady, Steady, Yes) and Flood (surprises after a flood from Courage My Love)). Earlier this year, the multi-talented Annie was opening a one-woman spoken word show ... those stories in another form. There's an interesting interview with her from an issue of puremusic.com: http://puremusic.com/annie.html And a few short clips from several of her albums off her site at Prime CD: http://www.primecd.com/annie.htm Plus at Harmony Ridge's site: http://hrmusic.com/artists/agart.html Laurianne Fiorentino ... ah, the local fave! I did get to catch a couple of her songs at a Folk Alliance showcase in Vancouver, and enjoyed her voice & lyrics, as well as her use of Native American flute in the music. Reminds me I ought to visit her website and listen ... Lucy Kaplansky - I think I heard heard her about the same time Neal did - 96 or so - in a really nice listening venue here in Chicago. I enjoyed the show, and have that first album, but realize that it hasn't found it's way onto my CD player much in the intervening time. It may just be the result of an excess of music to listen to -- and me not hearing something that stacked up to other musicians I listened to, or what. As I recall, her voice was great, she had a good rapport with the audience, but I just didn't get hooked. ... not that I fully understand what it is about some music that connects and other that just passes by ... by the way, Neal, how is your car? and the neighborhood? that sounded rather drastic! I missed the Letterman ... and the 11/12 appearance was the one listed on Natalie's web site! However, it is likely that it was Alison - I think I remember Susan saying that Alison plays with Natalie... and that may have been the reason that Chanting House used a different drummer at some east coast gigs recently.. ... but then again my brain sometimes does creative things with what it hears ...
