She was in fine form, backed by a 3 piece. She covered a huge repository of material, including really old stuff, like "The Queen and the Soldier" and "Left of Center," which was performed just with a bass guitar and her voice. Like VHI's storytellers, she revealed the inspiration for the songs. For instance, both "In Liverpool" and "Gypsy" were about her first love, an anarchist (or Dada-ist) boyfriend from Liverpool. The new stuff was memorable--I don't yet have the cd, but I remembered several melodies and bits of lyrics, particularly "Soap and Water." At one point, she took requests. She was very witty. Last night, I saw Natalie Merchant, whom I hadn't seen live since before "In My Tribe" came out. She was visually arresting as ever--her Stevie Nicks meets whirling dervish presence hasn't diminished. She opened up with a Middle-Eastern inflected number, writhing in white shawl, doing fake Indian dances, and ululated during the song. She then launched into "Don't Talk," prowling the stage like panther, dragging the mike stand with her. For "Hey Jack Keroauc," she did a hair-flipping surf dance. Covers included a Lucinda Williams song, "Sweet Old World," and "The Gulf of Araby." The new material was good--there's a song called "Build a Levee," that draws upon old African-American blues mythology (with the Devil appearring as a character). Her concessions to Political Correctness--she demanded no smoking during the concert (or rather, made the 930 institute a no smoking policy), and before the encore she had a representative from the International Crisis Center, or some such, talk about his organization. Old habits die hard, I guess. She was chatty and sweet natured, doing a couple of a capella fragments here and there. All in all, not a bad way to enter 30-something hood. - --Craig ===== "I hope that Cream of Tartar isn't what I think it is..."--Rita Rudner Find a job, post your resume. http://careers.yahoo.com ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #323 **************************
