I was totally blown away by this girl.. great soulful voice, her stage presence reminded me of Natalie Merchant.. I immediately bought the two CDs she had for sale there. One of the first things I did when I returned home was to search the net for more info on her. I came up with absolutely nothing, not a mention of her... So, after all this time I looked again, and sure enough she now has a site: http://www.jencohen.com/ There's some decent samples there, be sure to try 'Out of My Element' ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Nov 2001 06:36:29 -0500 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: Re: Hello from Julia Macklin Welcome to ecto, Julia! Greg footahed: >ah, but i live in fear that FX will not play through season five, and i >will be left staring hopelessly across an episode gap at season six. ah >well, i can always watch the Xena musical episodes again ;) Heh. Well, people *do* have episodes on tape... >speaking of which, anyone have an opinion on Xena soundtrack CDs? some of >the Mr. LoDuca's music, particularly the bits with wailing vocals, are >downright ecto-ish. Oooh boy, a _Xena_ question!!! I haven't gotten around to ordering the latest one yet (the two-disc season finale extravaganza), but I do have all the rest, and yes, I do listen to them on occasion. LoDuca, who was consistently nominated for Emmys for his scoring of the series (but never won, dammit) has very eclectic musical tastes, and that certainly came through in his music. I particularly like the soundtrack music for the "India arc" of season-4 episodes, which is on soundtrack Vol. 4. By far my favorite musical moment from the series comes from a 4th-season episode called "Forgiven" (starring a pre-_Roswell_ Shiri Appleby as possibly the most annoying character ever to pollute the Xenaverse, ironically named Tara), in which we have a positively Ofra Haza-like tune called "Tara's Dance". That one is a bonus track on the soundtrack to the musical episode "Lyre Lyre Hearts On Fire", and I'd recommend the soundtrack to ectophiles on the strength of that song alone. The thing I hate, hate, hate about Varese Sarabande's soundtrack releases is that they contain no liner notes whatsover, so I have absolutely no clue who sings the song (is that even legal?!). I'd also recommend the "Lyre, Lyre" soundtrack for its other bonus track, a great rendition of the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out" sung by Lucy Lawless (who has a *great* voice for that sort of thing) and Renee O'Connor's larynx double. This duet between Xena and Gabrielle had to be cut from the episode for time, which is a shame because it's one of the most successful songs on the whole thing, ranking up there with the sultry, percussive "Sisters Are Doin' It", again led by Ms. Lawless. Of course, "The Bitter Suite" soundtrack is also great, because that really was a well-done musical. I don't listen to it a lot because I have to be in a particular mood for that brand of Andrew Lloyd-Webber-meets-Disney pastiche, but I still enjoy it when I do. Just curious, as I'm going to be booking my spring tour to promote my LP (finally! after 3 years of waiting to record it! =) ), what your favorite acoustic venues on the east coast are... I am looking to player smaller coffeehouses and venues that are more intimate... I'd love to hear what venues you've been to that you've fallen in love with and they support indie musicians... you can e-mail me privately. I'd appreciate it! :) Thanks!
