KYLIE ranks up there as one of my guilty pleasures, but i have to say that i never expected her to pop up that much on ECTO. > However, all this info is from my memory 5 years ago. Great song. And if anyone is interested, > Kylie's 1997 album "Impossible Princess" (simply self titled in the UK) is the closest thing to Ecto > Kylie has done. A great album in my opinion ... > a rare look at the "real" Kylie - the pop star trying to figure herself out. Some have compared it > to Garbage meets Madonna (in her electonica phase). yeah, and unfortunately it didn't sell well at all, so KYLIE ended up going back to her pop roots (LIGHT YEARS and FEVER her past to albums have been the "comeback" of KYLIE). during KYLIE's year with the label DECONSTRUCTION, they tried to turn KYLIE's sound and image around from lightweight pop to a grittier more rock/electronica orientated sound. both her first album with DECONSTRUCTION (entitled KYLIE MINOGUE) and IMPOSSIBLE PRINCESS (which was also entitled KYLIE MINOGUE in the UK, because of the death of PRINCESS DI) explored sounds that her previous work with the STOCK AITKEN WATERMAN factory never had a chance. the second album definitely had an edge to it, with collaborations with MANIC STREET PREACHERS, THE GRID (SOFT CELL and OLIVE) and BROTHERS IN RHYTHM (who produced the bulk of the album). i would say that the comparison to MADONNA during her RAY OF LIGHT phase (though it predates the album by a year) is fairly accurate, though i think i like WILLIAM ORBIT's work better than BROTHERS IN RHYTHM. the first album was a bit of a transition album with her working with pop dance groups like M PEOPLE and PET SHOP BOYS for the album. DECONSTRUCTION released a sort of an odds and sods album called HITS PLUS. which i don't have, but it contains the duet with NICK CAVE and is suppose to be quite an excellent collection of songs. KYLIE has never had a huge success here in the states, other than her 80's one hit cover of THE LOCOMOTION (yep, that's her, singing the LOCOMOTION, remember that?). in europe and japan and australia, i believe she is MONSTER huge, on the same level as MADONNA. there are rumors that she has signed to CAPITOL RECORDS here in the states, and they will be releasing some domestic version of her latest album or some sort of almagam album of the last two albums, but who knows. personally i don't think these albums would do that great here. too light weight fluffy europoppy for this market. apparently a remix of the song BUTTERFLY from LIGHT YEARS is making the rounds and climbing the US CLUB CHART. if she were to release an album here in the states, i think it would have to be radically remixed for this market, or marketed strictly as a dance album. too bad IMPOSSIBLE PRINCESS was never released here, i think it would have done well with the proper marketing. oh sorry. this is probably way too much info for you guys. ah well. guess that's what the DELETE key is for. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 07:21:23 -0500 From: Kim Justice Subject: hi again + kj update Hi all, I re-subbed recently and it's been fun to read ecto and see familiar names from the list in my in-box again. They were mighty fine. I was cranky and tired, and dozed through opener Heather Duby's set (http://www.ectoguide.org/guide.cgi?artists/duby.heather). I like her recordings well enough but last night she just seemed like any random rock band. She's got a nice voice, but it was way low in the mix and the songwriting didn't seem to be up to that much. It made me realize how much of the sound of hers I liked likely came from Steve Fisk in the studio. After her was a string trio, the People's Bizarre, which was interesting enough to anyone who wasn't cranky and tired. When Halou came on they played with them. Until Halou started to play I wondered why on earth I was putting myself through the agony of a late night smokey scenester club show. But the moment they started I remembered why.

Halou has that rare and wonderful knack of writing memorable songs, doing interesting atmospheric background stuff (which actually I couldn't hear too well last night due to the crowd noise and noise from the band in the upstairs restaurant), and having a creative and good lead singer (whom happily I could hear well). She was also good on stage--dramatic, without being over the top. And it was great to see a singer not wearing jeans--she was in a floor-length, black taffeta strapless evening gown with elbow-length gloves. That was fun. Their new album was released Tuesday on Nettwerk. It contains a couple of the best songs from their first album which is currently out of print. It was, as expected, a great show. The place was completely sold out - I've never seen such a crowd there. I wasn't surprised, because it's her hometown and I don't think she's played there since the Knitting Factory show a couple years ago. Somehow we managed to get a good spot up near the front, despite getting there just a few minutes before she took the stage. She was with her band, Gerry Leonard on guitars and the ubiquitous Mike Visceglia on bass, and I never did catch the name of the drummer. The set was surprisingly heavy on older material, but that wasn't a bad thing. She started right in with "Marlene On The Wall" and "Small Blue Thing", then proceeded to do my other absolute faves throughout the set ("Gypsy", "The Queen And The Soldier", "Blood Makes Noise"). She also tossed in "Calypso" during the encore. It was like I was back in high school again. :) She also did most of the new album, _Songs In Red And Grey_, which was fun. I think it's her best album since _Solitude Standing_, and it was good to hear the songs live. She is still recovering from her broken arm, so she only played guitar on a few songs (the absolute classics), but Gerry Leonard is such a great guitar player, it didn't matter much. Mike Visceglia is such an amazing bassist, too. He provided the sole accompaniment on a very cool rendition of "Left Of Center" that was the highlight of the show for me. That's the first Suzanne Vega song I ever heard, and it's largely responsible for my discovery of non-top-40 music back in 10th grade. (After it was over I heard the woman behind me ask her boyfriend, "Is that new?" and he replied "I think so, I've never heard it before." Of course I couldn't let that go so I set them straight. They looked at me like "who the frell are you", but hey.) It was well worth getting home at 2 am and being an absolute basket case at work today (I think I'm getting too old for this). ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Oct 2001 23:47:41 -0400 From: meredith Subject: attention jewel fans...
