Subject: David Kitt, etc. Among many others in a recent ews splurge, I picked up the latest by an artist called David Kitts, "The Big Romance". He has been extolled by music critics as one of the leading lights of the N** A******* M*******, and I was curious to see what he had to offer. My first reaction was borne out of disappointment, I have to admit --- I'd expected someone with a bit more edge, more of a Tom McRae type, and what I got was something far dreamier and more laid back. And yet....and yet.....imagine James Taylor and Kraftwerk jamming together on a hill in the West of England on a fine summer's day until, inevitably, they are joined by the spirit of Nick Drake. Yes, I said Nick Drake. For once, the critics got it right, and there is a similarity (i suppose if they throw his name around enough whenever a singer/songwriter appears, sooner or later it will actually fit). It's Nick Drake gone electronica, with gentle, lazy beats behind him. It's an album that, despite my expectations, I have returned to again and again. It's beautiful, haunting and thoroughly engaging and, to my surprise, I like it a lot. Highly recommended. On another, more recent and totally unnecessary ectotrawl, I picked up Poe's Haunted, Pinback's newest, Blue Screen Life, and a curious compiliation called Sweet Relief 2, in honour of Vic Chesnutt. I have the first one, but didn't realise they'd put out another. It boasts such artists as Garbage, REM, Mary Margaret O'Hara , Kristen Hirsh and the Indigo Girls, as well as Live and the Smashing Pumpkins -- quite a line up. I'm sure I'm the last one to find out about this, and I haven't gotten around to listening to it yet --- anyone have an opinion? Lastly, and completely off-topic, I have recently switched to Eudora as an e-mail package, and have no idea how this will effect my postings. Any feedback and opinions on Eudora vs Outlook will be appreciated, bearing in mind I have the technical savvy of a brick. yours, adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Oct 2001 14:04:48 -0400 From: "Datura Child" Subject: Re: Tori Lyric Book Hi. I got this book in paperback a few weeks ago. It does not, as claimed, contain 'every released Tori song', but it comes pretty close all the same. The illustrations are great. If you don't want to shell out the extra cash for the hardcover (I'm sure it costs more) you can pick one up from Amazon for about $21 including shipping. Well, I'm happy to report she's regained her stride. This is a strong album. Mostly her own and co-written songs with 3 covers (good choices this time, especially "The Angels Rejoiced Last Night" which is one of the best tracks on the album.) She has lovely harmonies, whether done by herself or background vocalists Jennifer Kimball, Buddy Miller, John Gorka, and Richard Shindell (who all appear, but never on the same track), so again, the harmonies are some of the most beautiful parts of her music. Well worth getting if you like Lucy or her work with Cry Cry Cry. Sounds like a good way to end the night. And so off goes my Mac until tomorrow.... Philip David (work keeps us from staying up too late) The Polly Stephanson Project http://www.pollyarts.f2s.com/ 10/21/2001 - ---------- From: S H E E B A Date: Sun, 21 Oct 2001 22:01:23 -0400 To: sib@sheeba.ca Subject: MUSELETTER. Siberry late night letter Dear Everyone, I hope you are all well. I have slipped into the office tonight to write you a letter. It is so busy here that I can't seem to get near a computer and feel slightly estranged from you all. And Thursday I begin my tour. I hope that you can make it to a concert. Let's send good energy out into the world together. __________________ Some news about this and that. Pardon any meandering, just want to make sure I get this letter off to you. What's happening at SHEEBA. The SHEEBA office continues to evolve and it is fascinating to watch it. Although I am still very involved, I feel a distinct difference in the last year. I hope this is because I have learned some lessons that I needed and have earned some creative freedom in the near future. Part of the goal of this tour is to fund the new recording which is very much on my mind. Performing solo, though, is not just to save money. I'm also not quite ready to share my audience with anyone yet. Does that sound strange? Hard to explain. Perhaps you understand. Anyway, there is more laughter in the office than ever before. And wonderful work being done. Perhaps the boss is relaxing a bit as she senses stability. However, a small sign saying 'Don't laugh too much' might still be in order, in case I'm wrong. A very artistic spirit, janet t. planet, has alighted in the SHEEBA world. Her first goal was to design clothes for me on tour. However, I ended up having her design the 'City' CD cover, the 'City' companion book with photos and words (which is stunning), SHEEBA's first calendar, posters, and most importantly the website which was ready to be beautified now that I've done playing with it's flow. She is also helping me with the beginnings of a fashion line. As with my music, the fashion line is a collection of favourite things I have not seen elsewhere often enough and simply wish to make a bit more available should other people have the same taste. (I've never quite defined my music that way ... hmmm.) Any rumours that I don't like to do laundry on tour are unfounded. So, I go fishing in the boxes for clean shirts. So? Everyone likes to go fishing in boxes. The winter hats are funky 'Canadian' and should not be worn with flaps up in a strong wind. The black shirts have an over-sized hood which I think hangs more elegantly. Sleeves are slightly flared at wrist (one of my favourite things). Unisex - should look good on men and women. Both items say 'City' and 'Siberry' and the shirt also has 'New York 2001 Love' written quietly inside the hood. Having a website store is quite limited. Many of our things are meant to be touched, turned over and examined. Can't really 'browse'. Perhaps someday web-stores will be three-dimensional holograms. But perhaps by then we won't need to shop. We'll project clothes, hats, music from our mind. That sounds good to me. Less clutter. Imagine those nice bare shelves. Unless it stops working all of a sudden. Say, when you suddenly see someone you know and you forget to project your clothes. Or you hear a loud sound. Meanwhile, we'll have all our new merchandise at the concerts. (And no shipping costs.) If anyone says 'don't touch', say 'Jane says touch'. - -------------------- Reminders and other notes before I forget: * If you take a flyer on buying something (without touching) and aren't satisfied, we have a cheerful money-back guarantee. (Says so on our website, but I don't think many have seen it.) * We can send anything as a gift. * 'CITY' is only available on our website. It was difficult to license the songs from such a wide variety of sources so we kept it simple. * If you have any trouble ordering or deciding what to order, please call the office directly. You'll be in good hands. * If you are receiving 2 copies of the Museletter, it is a glitch we are working on. You are NOT on our list twice. (Santa has a more complicated set-up.) * People have contacted us re: Victoria's Secret putting out a shirt with 'Calling All Angels'. Funny. Perhaps instead I'll design hip-waders for fisherman who mispell the title. (Calling All Anglers.) * SO many of you have requested sheet music for 'Calling All Angels' and we finally have it available in all it's piano, guitar and vocal glory. And the cover for it is the beautiful image from the CD single - Barocci's painting called 'The Visitation'. I know this letter is long and perhaps meandering but purely from me this Sunday night wanting to reach out before I leave. There may be typos and grammatical impurities. We shall not worry about that tonight. Hope to see you at a show. Let us make a joyful noise together.
