A few weeks ago, I mentioned a "Guardian" review of "Free Love", the debut album by an artist called peppercorn, in which they raved about it and gave it an exceptional five out of five stars (the outstanding new eels release, for instance, got only 4/5), comparing her to alanis and ani along the way.A week or so ago, I happened to come across this album in one of my little soho shops, and --- despite a warning from Ellen --- I decided to give it a go. I have since checked her website, and under "about me" there are also claims that she "defies convention" and comparisons to Erykah Badu and Lenny kravitz, as well as namechecking such inspirations as Jimmy Hendrix, Salif Keita and Bob Marley, as well as Sheryl Crow. Much is made of her ethnic background (Nigerian, born in Morocco and raised in London) and the sleeve photos have her come across like a cross between Laura Love and Badu. Of the finished product, she says: "We had an acoustic, spontaneous feel - we weren't searching for clean perfection - I like it when you almost hear the drummer sweating" It sounds like a marvellous pedigree and, as I first stated, ready made for ecto. There's only one problem: It's all utter rubbish. The sound achieved falls somewhere between a blatant and appalingly pale Alanis imitation, Alisha's Attic, a hint of Shania Twain (they share the same producer) and...well, any of the shiny, "soulful" acts clogging up the charts, right now. With its slick, synthesised drumbeats, its string arrangements and its anthemic ballads, it has all the substance and originality of processed cheese , and is about as nutritious. There is at least one naggingly catchy song in here, balanced against moments so...well, cheesy, that my toes curl in embarassment. The final song, "Bowing to Convention" in which she sings "And I have no intention/of bowing to Convention" by which time I could only think "You have one fucking nerve". Oh, and she swears a lot, as well, just to show how daring she is. I don't mind swearing, not at all -- but somehow she makes even that sound contrived. And as for that alanis bray of a laugh....ooooooohhhhhhh. This is dreadful, just...just...dreadful, and offensively bland, to boot. I realise this is a harsh judgement, and -- yeah -- it's all IMHO, but from the hype I was expecting a spicy, exotic stew, and what I got was porridge. And not even an original recipe. beware, adam k. Just the quality of the sound was magical. Her voice was sublime. I realize now that there is something in her that recordings cannot capture. There was a particular run of songs-'Little Amsterdam', 'Mother', and 'Enjoy The Silence', by the end of which I had tears streaming down my face, it was so beautiful. Please tell us all about it when you're able! I only wish there were more shows in the area I could get to...Ah, well. Next time around. By the way. At the Philly show there was a table on the right of the stage with portraits of 'New Age', 'I'm Not In Love', and 'Enjoy The Silence'. Have the other shows had different portraits? Just curious.
