She played a dissonant guitar for half the set, while she did a spastic dance. Her performance was angst-ridden, her face scrunched up and intense, her hair flying over her face. Occassionaly she did the Mick Jagger head bob thing, and sometimes strutted on the stage in rockergrrrl style. But her stage histronics were insular, rather than showman like. For about the other half of the show, she accompanied herself on the Wurtlizer, playing ominous Chopin-like dirges and carnival ditties, while she screamed, whispered and yelled her lyrics with her eyes closed. Wright was almost upstaged by her drummer, who was melodramatic in every since of the word. Lots of flourishes and windmilling hand motions. When he wasn't playing, his head was bowed down, in a deliberate pose that practically screamed "Look at me! I'm being reverent!" He was cute, though, so I'll forgive him his overkill. During the set, a slide projector flashed images of old road signs and fade family photographs over the performers. It was a rather intense show. - --Craig ===== "Tired moons ask higher tides."--Zelda Fitzgerald NEW from Yahoo! I want to say '98? Maybe Septemberish? Vickie, has it really been three years??? It was a tremendous performance. My older daughter is twelve now, and is a huge Tori fan. I hope to be able to take her to a show someday. Since I'm delurking, I'll mention a few things that have been bouncing around threads of late... My guilty pleasures (which have nothing to do with commercial success, or lack thereof) consist of things like ABBA (I realized this when I found myself singing along with the Muriel's Wedding soundtrack, as I'm sure others have), Little Feat (which is not really a guilty pleasure as much as a non-Ecto passion...I think they were one of the finest bands that ever existed...at least while Lowell George was living), Kiss, Alice Cooper,...oh hell...this list is fixin' to get long, so I'll quit here. Oh, was it Neile that mentioned T'Pau's Heart and Soul? I have that CD, and I keep trying to part with it but just can't. The rest of the CD was uninspiring, to say the least, but that one song... Discoveries for the year. One word: Poe. I found "The Haunting" to be the first thing that has come out in a very very long time that grabbed me and wouldn't let go. It's a wonderful stream of consciousness that has intelligent lyrics, well-crafted but not sugary hooks,...what's not to like? I found myself making comparisons to so many artists; Madonna, Sheryl Crow, Chrissie Hynde, Tracy Bonham (Not A Virgin Anymore...anyone? anyone? Is this not a Tracy Bonham-like tune?), Sarah McL, and others that I can't even remember. BUT, Poe is greater than the sum of those comparisons. I find this disc to be extremely accessible, and appeals to people with all sorts of tastes. OK, break's over, back on my head. Although the show seemed a little somber to me, and it didn't seem like she talked as much as usual, she still had a few of her characteristically quirky stories, and she even did two encores. The Suzanne Vega show on Saturday was wonderful as well, even without Suzanne playing guitar (her arm is still recovering from a bike accident, adding her to my list of favorite musicians to whom misfortune has fallen lately). - -Emily ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Oct 2001 21:00:53 +0200 From: "Elin Sjlie" Subject: Re: Today's your birthday, friends... Keller" Subject: jenny toomey Add another item to that Best of 2001 list: Jenny Toomey's recent 2-CD solo album =Antidote=. Jenny Toomey is one of the geniuses of indie rock: just as a musician (in Tsunami, Liquorice and a passel of other bands) she's as important as, say, Kristin Hersh; but that leaves aside her brilliant entrepreneurship (most notably as co-head of the now-defunct Simple Machines label), her critical writing, and her recent activism on the future of the recording industry. =Antidote= is her first release of new music since the 1997 Tsunami album =A Brilliant Mistake=; I recognized well over half the songs from having seen her perform over the last few years, both solo and under the band name Liquorice. I had understood that many of these songs were intended for a second Liquorice album (the first having been released in 1995), but the project turned into a solo album at some point. The songs I heard live worked perfectly well with just her modest guitar parts and maybe another guitar or a cello; but they work even better in the chamber-music or jazz-combo arrangements here: a couple woodwinds, a horn or two, solo strings, guitars, drums, some piano in various combinations. Toomey also lets her musicians stretch out with long instrumental endings that are quite tasty. The album features thirteen Toomey originals, an alternate arrangement of one, a song by Adam Cohen of the Mommyheads, and Curtis Mayfield's "Fool for You." The styles range from pure guitar rock to touches of jazz, blues, cabaret, country, and gospel. All the tracks feature Toomey's intelligence, focus, highly literate lyrics, and first-rate vocals--she has so many other strong qualities her pure singing ability slips one's mind. (And like Mila Drumke, it's clear that she would have been a fine jazz singer if she'd been born fifty years earlier.) The oldest two songs here, "Breezewood, PA" and "When You Get Cold," I first heard her play in 1996; emotionally, they kind of bracket the range of the album. "Breezewood" is a beginning-relationship song: bright, upbeat, verbally playful, a real charmer. "When You Get Cold" is a breakup song (before it had a title she referred to it as "the angry song"): dark, powerful, bitingly eloquent--the one track on the album that approaches the overwhelming intensity of her best work with Tsunami. Definitely one of her greatest songs. It's a relief and a pleasure to finally have these songs on disc. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Oct 2001 15:38:04 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: rasputina: the lost & found?
