And while I'm on the subject of older albums that people might have dismissed and missed out on (and which I haven't mentioned for a while :) *everyone* should listen to Sam Brown's "43 Minutes" if they get a chance. DR DRE! I was curious at the tone of this. Why such surprise? That a rap artist might care? I saw across the bottom of CNN that Julia Roberts donated $2 million. Maybe that is a drop in a bucket for her. I don't know what she's worth monetarily, nor do I care. Maybe it *will* be good for their PR in the long run. Or their exposure. Although the several acts I didn't recognize I still don't know who they were. Participants' names aren't listed on the website (that I saw), just a link to donating. Even the baseball player who's donating $10,000 per home run he hits for the rest of the season is doing a good thing, and I think that's a lot more self-publicity than what these stars did the other night. My sister told me similarly about some car racers who are donating x dollars per lap. And maybe they are donating apart from that too. People can always do more; that's true. People can also always do less. I thought the telethon was well-done and very understated, and I enjoyed it. Except for Neil Young's version of "Imagine" actually. That was the one performance I erased and taped over. Yes, that's right, 100%. Apparently CD Baby has given its artists this option. Now might be a great time to pick up this wonderful album (which continues to grow on me over time). Or check out CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com) to see who else is doing this whose album you might want to buy to support the artists (emotionally I guess) and the cause and their efforts toward this cause. The full list of artists who are doing this is at http://www.cdbaby.com/group/911?baby=960a5f2df50979e183beefc5e19e7a74. I can't help but think this is more than a token effort, as all of CD Baby's artists are independents. Speaking of Terami, I was lucky enough to get a copy of the 3-song promo sampler for her forthcoming album, and the songs are really strong and wonderful. Two of the songs have already written themselves into my head. >I thought the telethon was well-done and very understated, and I enjoyed >it. Except for Neil Young's version of "Imagine" actually. Some things I noticed in that list (I don't know all of these, but they have been mentioned on ecto at some point): Under folk: monday morning cold - Erin McKeown (how does this compare to her later album?) dragersville - Rose Polenzani Alexandria - Louisa John-Krol (I recently borrowed this album from Jeff and found it really beautiful in a vaguely Loreena McKennitt way.) I also strongly endorse Terami's album, which is a lot of fun and pretty varied piano-based pop with an edge. JoAnn Curiously, although I saw very little of the telecast, and even less with sound on, ( that little gaggle of backup singers looks really hilarious bobbing up and down with no music present; check it out), I did see Neil Young cover "Imagine" and really liked it. The curious part: I never once liked the Lennon original, and for most of my life, Young's nasal vocalizations have been for me the vocal equivalent of fingernails on a chalkboard. His singing is reminiscent of that of Dana Carvey's 'Church Lady' character. (Two I really like that album - we used to listen to it at work all the time. It's probably not something that I would listen to outside of the work environment though. From what I've heard of the Chemical Brothers, Crystal Method is kind of smoother and has less vocals. He's a goner, but he's smart enough not to go around invoking Hubbard's name at every opportunity like Travolta. I worry that he'll infect Penelope Cruz, who is a very cool person and deserves better. Rumor has it that the Co$ caused Tom & Nicole's breakup. She's never really been a member, and has half-heartedly defended it over the years only because of the hubby. Something came to a head somewhere, most likely having to do with their children. Tom supposedly wanted the kids to attend a CoS school (which are all absolute crap, and succeed only at steeping the kids in L. Ron Hubbard-speak and $cieno-doctrine) and she said no. Whatever, I for one am glad the poor kids will have one sane parent to give them balance, AND that she's rich and famous enough so that the $cieno lawyers can't get the kids taken away, which is something that happens *ALL THE TIME* with regular $cieno/non-$cieno divorced couples.
