Our thoughts too... All these surpassingly wealthy celebrities giving their 2 hours- and (very publicly) even paying their own airfares and lodging. Wowee. Folks, Dr. Dre managed to donate one million dollars to the recovery effort. DR DRE! Inmates in a maximum-security lockup in Louisiana somehow came up with $11,000 for the cause. And all Julia Roberts and Jack Nicholson could spare was their time imploring working people to give and give generously and (for once) paying their own way? These are people who have become wealthy beyond the dreams of you and me bacause of the cultural system that these terrorists are willing to die to destroy. If my wife and I, who are working ourselves into the ground to pay our bills, can drop a $50 bill into a fire department collection bucket, can't they do something commensurate with their income? Like maybe each of them sponsoring a family who lost a firefighter or policeman or other rescuer, paying their bills, putting their children through college, covering the costs of the years of counseling and therapy the children and spouses of those who died in the rescue effort are surely going to need. And then each of them donating $1 million, no strings, to help the families of those in the buildings, on the ground, and in the hijacked planes killed by the terrorists. Maybe it would even be deductible. And I doubt it would force them to live like us. Do you have any proof whatsoever that they have not given in other ways, or is this just a prejudiced assumption based, perhaps, on some class-based distrust for or dislike of the wealthy? Many people have been giving in many ways, usually unpublicized. That the stars chose to, additionally, deploy their fame in the undeniably laudable effort of convincing others also to give cannot be considered to be other than a good thing. - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Jerusaklyn http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2001 23:58:28 -0400 From: meredith Subject: music in ad Hi, I was watching the "50 Years of Late Night TV" special on NBC earlier this evening when a PT Cruiser ad came on with music sung by a *very* familiar female voice. None of us in the room (mostly ectophiles) could figure out who it was, and it's bugging us all. I checked adcritic.com, but the ad must be too new for the info to be up there yet. Anyone else catch this? It sounded almost like nouveau Sarah Slean, but I know it's not... ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Sep 2001 22:24:19 -0600 From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: Hi all...2 questions At 10:29 PM -0700 9/21/01, Bill wrote: Re: Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World >I *had* to find out who that was the very moment I heard this tune >played during the closing titles of "Meet Joe Black" (there's another >movie since which has used this tune at the end).
