LAND OF THE BLIND was chosen to join the MusicFest NW, sponsored by Willamette Week, and were to headline Saturday night at the OHM. We were very excited, especially since this festival seemed to be more about music than smoozing, groups were chosen for their work, rather than a local popularity contest. Plus, the bands are being paid, instead of paying to apply.(My continued resistance to conferences that make tons of money rejecting bands is all encompassing) Any who, it sounds like a great festival, the promoters have been very understanding to BLIND as I continued up to the last minute to try & make it happen, so I encourage all local music lovers to attend. My new and wonderful bass/Chapman stick player, Capri, was overseas, 3 Blind members were in Portland, and 2 stuck in San Francisco after being in New York. Nightmare logistics time, not to mention no one is real excited to fly. So, as much as we hate to cancel a show, I don't think we ever have in 5 years, we have to admit we tried to come up there but can not. Again, our apologies to all, both the club, the promoters and our fans. I am sure at this time in the world everyone understands. We hope to tour up and see you all soon, maybe in November. I myself am still depressed from the events, still reeling from a hard re-entry from Burning Man, still tripped out by the wonderful tour east ending in television horror. I pray for peace and for all of us to recover. I just recorded a new song about it all, the only thing a musician can do sometimes, it is sad but hopeful, and anyone that wants a cdr of it, send me your address and I will mail one, free of course. Anyone that is making money off of this horror (oh buy my album and I will give 1% to a relief fund) makes me barf. Oh don't get me started. Again, go enjoy the great music Portland has and Willie Week is giving you for just $20 for lots of clubs, tons of bands for two nights and have a drink for me. Wish I was there. And to all a good night. I could've sworn I wrote about them back in the spring when I saw them here in New Haven, but after about an hour of searching I can't find the post anywhere, so I must be hallucinating again. Basically, Damon covered what I would have said back then. They're a lot of fun. Bitch is an amazing bass and violin player, and Animal is amusing to watch as she bangs away at her drums. Their militant dyke standpoint might be too much for some people (in which case, well, boo-hoo on you), but I'd still recommend them for their musicianship and the fact that they are very, very funny. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2001 11:06:03 -0700 From: Tim Jasnau Subject: Banned song list The controversy continues... Apparently that list (athough smaller at first) was in fact compiled by Clear Channel and then added to as program directors e-mailed around their own ideas about what songs might be inappropriate for radio now. Even the Urban Legends website confirms it is true (they list the status "false", but go on to explain in the story that what is false is that these songs were "banned", the truth is that they were not banned but "questionable" and that program directors should make their own decisions. So yes, that's why stories proclaim "Banned Song list only a rumor". A Google search using the words - "Clear Channel" radio list - reveals several stories about the list, some seemingly contradictory. Apparently the discrepency is over the word "banned". Clear Channel never did ban the songs from being played, but it appears they did indeed compile and distribute a list of questionable songs. If you read carefully the stories that say the list was a only a rumor, you'll find technical denials such as - "The songs that made the list were supposedly handpicked by program directors on the West Coast," Pam Taylor, a spokesperson for the Texas-based company told Hollywood.com on Wednesday. "It is a rumor. We never banned any songs from airing on our radio stations." And from Clear Channels website and press release - "Banned Playlist does not exist". "Clear Channel Radio has not banned any songs from any of its radio stations. Clear Channel believes that radio is a local medium. It is up to every radio station program director and general manager to understand their market, listen to their listeners and guide their stationms music selections according to local sensitivities. Each program director and general manager must take the pulse of his or her market to determine if play lists should be altered, and if so, for how long." But you should really check it out for yourself if interested. > http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Clear+Channel%22+radio+list&btnG=Google+Search ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2001 11:57:19 -0700 From: Ed Cole Subject: Re: Hi all...2 questions Schmalt z is a pretty fair description of his overproduced albums. The simplicity of a man and his uke singing OTR/WHAWW and the other few solo songs in his body of work really stand out. I've wondered about the irony of dedicating that song to Gabby Pahinui. I got hooked on slack key when I lived in Hawaii from 72-75. Gabby had been playing it since the 40's and lead it's renaissance in the 70's. I would have thought Iz might dedicate an old Hawaiian song to Pops. For anyone interested it turns out that George Winston is a slack key fan. He's formed a little subsidiary of Windham Hill called Dancing Cat Records. They've been doing an excellent job at recording slack key performers as solo artists. I haven't found any performance that has the soul Iz reveals in OTR/WHAWW but I still love the mellowness of the guitar work. The very definition of laid back. Gabby's band contained about 4 of his sons. They're all carrying on the tradition. The two albums of Cyril Pahinui on Dancing Cat are both superb. The first Dennis Kamakahi CD is also at the top of my recommendation list for people wanting to diversify their musical tastes. They have two of the the best singing voices on Dancing Cat. Some people are put off by the Hawaiian lyrics. Their alphabet has only 13 letters. Hence the repetitious vowel sounds. I'm still working my way through Thursday evenings acquisitions. I'm playing Tanita Tikaram's ancient heart now. Fine stuff. At 11:20 PM 9/20/2001 -0600, Neal Copperman wrote: Jeff picked up his CD and I've had a chance to listen to it now. I haven't listened more than in passing though, so perhaps I should give it more of a chance. And actually, I don't really care how the rest of his catalog is. He seems worthy of admiration simply for that transendant version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in years. neal np: Skin - Molly Zenobia ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2001 12:46:05 -0700 From: "Suzanna Otting" Subject: ecto everywhere Hello Ectophiles, It's been a while since I've posted...I mainly wanted to share my reaction to the fundraiser telethon that was broadcast last night. I have to admit that I didn't know all of the musicians who played and sang, but on a certain level, I was impressed with all of them for giving a performance without announcing who they were, the name of the song, etc. I really liked U2's performance, which made me rethink their latest CD, and I thought that Celine Dion's "God Bless America" was a powerful performance. I'm looking forward to listening to Happy's "Left Hand Demos", and I'm still trying to understand the facets (or faces) of Tori's "Strange Little Girls", and I just picked up Katell Keineg's "Jet" in a bargain bin somewhere. It was rather strange to see the skyline as we approached the Triboro Bridge and realize that the Empire State Building was the tallest building in sight. As we drove through Times Square it was obvious that New York is relatively empty. I forget which avenue it was that I looked down as we crossed it, but even from 43rd St. the column of smoke rising from Ground Zero was visible. It was very eerie. We met up with a couple friends who have been fans of Laurie even longer than I have (they went to a screening of _Home Of The Brave_ when they were in high school, thinking it was a different movie entirely -- what an introduction!). They were sitting in the front of the balcony, tickets from the first day they went on sale. I got tickets only a couple weeks ago, row H of the orchestra, over on the right side but that just meant I was looking straight at Laurie with an unobstructed view the whole evening. Great seats. This tour is different from every other Laurie Anderson tour I've seen. No multimedia, hardly any lighting ... just four musicians on a stage, arranged in a line so no one was any more in front or in back (from audience left to right: drums, keyboards, bass, and Laurie with her setup). It was a true concert. I hadn't given any thought as to what to expect: I guess I just figured it'd be a performance of _Life On A String_. So I was completely floored when she started "Let X=X" and took that into "Sweaters", then continued to do a bunch of stuff from _Big Science_ ("Walking, Not Falling", "White Lily") and _Strange Angels_ ("Strange Angels", "Hansel And Gretel", "Coolsville"), interspersed with selections from the new album and a couple things from _Bright Red_ as well. I never, ever thought I'd get to hear "O Superman" live, but there it was. It was incredible. And even though I haven't listened to _Big Science_ in years, I still knew all the words. I guess that's what obsessing over an album at an impressionable age will do that to you. :) Laurie didn't have a lot to say about recent events. She started off by saying she dedicated the performance to the opportunity we all have to proceed with compassion, and then later said it was overwhelming to be back home in New York, and hear people ask "How are you?" and realize this time they actually mean it. :) The music, though, said a lot. Songs like "O Superman" and several from the new album (in particular "Statue of Liberty") were almost eerily prescient. I don't think she and the band would have had enough time to change the setlist to match the situation, either. All in all it was a great show. Unfortunately her American tour is now over, but if any European ectophiles have her coming to their area, I highly recommend grabbing a ticket if you can. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Sep 2001 21:12:26 +0000 From: ebgb@textmode.net Subject: Re: laurie anderson in nyc Hi all. I'm going to the London show on 5/10 and am looking forward to it all the more now. :) I have never seen Laurie play live so it should be an interesting experiance. Any other ectophiles going? It's going to be a good time for gigs. Gary Numan (very ecto :) ) tomorrow night and Echobelly, Aimee Mann and Heather Nova all soon. Partly because I just needed a break from the information overload, partly because we had a ton of back episodes of _Farscape_ to catch up on in the TiVo, and partly because I have kind of mixed feelings about Hollywood co-opting the cause. I'm just cynical enough that I have a hard time believing that absolutely none of the actors and musicians involved was thinking at all about how their participation could improve their PR down the line. And I'm *really* glad I didn't see Tom Cruise paying tribute to the NYFD Chaplain who died at the WTC. After the news story I read yesterday about how Scientologists have been crawling all over Ground Zero, (http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/20/nyregion/20CHAN.html?ex=1002214205&ei=1&en=4cf50492f0fa76ac), I found that to be particularly crass.
