It doesn't have the depth and beauty of her earlier cover songs, like Smells Like Teen Spirit or Angie. BTW, how many different cover photos do exist? I've only seen two different covers and bought the one with the cowboy hat. Sometimes the character-thing works but more than that, it doesn't. Also the many many shades on the record make it hard for the songs to flow. Especially since they're all of different writers. Raining Blood, Heart of Gold, I Don't Like Mondays and Time are all awesome though. A bit disappointing but still quite good. Just not a Tori classic if you ask me. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2001 08:29:34 -0500 From: "Anne Deming" Subject: Fwd: hmm The list of songs unsuitable for radio play...for those of you who haven't seen it yet... Anne n.p. -Emmylou Harris "Red Dirt Girl" September 17, 6 p.m. ET, Launch The world's largest radio network has generated for its radio stations a staggering list of rock songs and pop songs with words presumably inappropriate for the airwaves in light of last week's terrorist attacks, including such near-standards as John Lennon's "Imagine," Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven," and Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World." The list, from industry leader Clear Channel, amasses approximately 150 songs considered "lyrically inappropriate," LAUNCH has confirmed; and it includes everything from Frank Sinatra's "New York, New York" and Elvis Presley's "(You're The) Devil In Disguise" to current hits such as "Chop Suey!," the single from System Of A Down, currently the number-one selling band in the country. Hard rock acts were prominent on the list--AC/DC has seven songs on the list, Metallica and Alice In Chains four, and Black Sabbath and Soundgarden three. However, no group was singled out like Rage Against The Machine--"all songs" from the aggressive, overtly political group made the list. Others on the list include the Bangles ("Walk Like An Egyptian"), the Clash ("Rock The Casbah"), Alien Ant Farm ("Smooth Criminal"), Surfaris ("Wipeout"), the Trammps ("Disco Inferno"), John Parr (St. Elmo's Fire"), Bobby Darin ("Mack The Knife"), the Gap Band ("You Dropped A Bomb On Me"), and James Taylor ("Fire And Rain"). A Clear Channel spokesperson did not return calls by LAUNCH at press time. Clear Channel says the report is false: CLEAR CHANNEL SAYS NATIONAL "BANNED PLAYLIST" DOES NOT EXIST FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE San Antonio, TX, September 18, 2001...Clear Channel Communications, Inc. (NYSE: CCU) today issued the following statement as a result of numerous stories, emails and calls concerning an alleged "list of banned songs" on its U.S. radio stations following last week's tragedy in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania: "Clear Channel Radio has not banned any songs from any of its radio stations. Clear Channel believes that radio is a local medium. It is up to every radio station program director and general manager to understand their market, listen to their listeners and guide their station's music selections according to local sensitivities. Each program director and general manager must take the pulse of his or her market to determine if play lists should be altered, and if so, for how long. In the wake of this terrible tragedy, the nation's business community is responding with a degree of hypersensitivity," explained Mark P. Mays, President and Chief Operating Officer of Clear Channel. "Even some movie companies have altered some of their release schedules in light of the mood in America today. Clear Channel strongly believes in the First Amendment and freedom of speech. We value and support the artist community. And we support our radio station programming staff and management team in their responsibility to respond to their local markets." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Sep 2001 15:45:08 -0400 From: "Datura Child" Subject: which Girl did you choose? It may just be the ardent Toriphile in me, But I think 'Strange Little Girls' is intrancing. I don't know...I've been getting flashes in my head as I listen to these songs and look at the portraits. I Don't Like Mondays in particular. I keep seeing this little movie of her (the Texas Ranger character) arriving at the scene of a school shooting and finding the bodies of all these dead children...Many of these songs strike me in how they protest violence by depicting it in such a mater of fact fashion. There is a theme behind the covers...a timely on at that. But that's just what I think. I saw three different covers at the Tower I went to (and I did check every copy they had); 'Time', 'Raining Blood', and 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun'. I chose 'Time'. I've a sneeky suspicion that, in keeping with the "covers" theme, there will be as many covers as there are Girls on this album. If you can't wait for a taste of it, they have 3 songs you can stream from it on their website, as well as a video you can stream for the first single, "Gabriel". Again, they're doing something a little different. I trust it will grow on me as much as their previous two albums, both of which I adore and play frequently. I still haven't bought the new Tori album. After hearing the samples I just can't get excited enough to pay full price or to drive over the disc store in town that might have it on sale. I will eventually. Maybe that will grow on me, too. Right now Bjork's _Vespertine_ rules the roost. And we finally bought a new amp and disc player so the improved sound is our own little bit of solace. Heck, we've only been talking about getting new equipment for about 10 years (the amp dated back from the 70s). - --Neile n.p. Lamb samples n.r.
